Powama: Free play and exploration time on the drums. The Gaz: Play the I (closed), IV (open) and V (flip) on the drums, then have your piano fingers go for a walk, tapping the drum head all around. Listen for the call to finish the chord progression. Repeat the activity. Tideo: Children play on the rhythm of tideo. Shoo Turkey: Repeat activity from last week. Ask everyone to play and sing, Yes, ma am and, Soso after the teacher sings each phrase. Stand and remind them we will need our turkey wings, raise arms with elbows out, and our turkey tails, shake hips, so we can do the silly turkey dance around the drum circle for the next part of the song. When the A section returns, everyone will have a new instrument. All are welcome to free play until it s time to play, Yes, ma am again. The teacher surprises the children with a turkey puppet that makes turkey noises as he dances with the children on the B section. Repeat at least once. Rain On The Green Grass (From Rhymes In The Rain): Say the rhyme for them once. Ask them to play on the word, Rain and, Not on me in a short, quick, detached way, staccato. Repeat multiple times to prepare for glockenspiels. Activity Title Comments Movement for Holiday Show Performance Solo Singing Five Little Jingle Bells (New) (Holiday Show) Now My Bells Are Up Turkey Feathers Before class, put a long straight line of tape on the floor. This is used for the visual of where the children stand. Leave room behind the line to be able to gallop on the pretend stage. Five Little Jingle Bells: Have the parents sit at one side of the room to be the audience. (This should be close to the tape with children facing them) Have the kids stand on the tape (both feet need to touch the tape), and explain this is the front of the stage and if they turn around, that is the back of the stage where the horses will soon go for a gallop. Pass out Jingle bells to everyone. Bring out the puppet and say, We are going on a sleigh ride with Cocoa. You can also show the picture of the horses and sleigh. Teacher uses a rhythm stick, holding it horizontally, with five bells hanging from it. Cocoa holds on to one end of the stick. Sing, One little jingle bell fell in the snow and drop one of the bells after the word, Snow. Practice with the kids to drop their bell and pick it back up. During the chorus everyone follows you and Cocoa, galloping in a circle on the stage behind the line. Start the music! TIP: The teacher has a pocket or little bag with her for each bell she drops. Now My Bells Are Up: Follow directions provided by the words of the song. Sing it slowly the first time. The second time, wait for the children to sing at the end of the phrases, Up, down, town, head, shoulder, knee, bed. Parent Info: If they don t want to go up on stage at the open house, just stay with them at the front and they can get their bell wherever they are! We want this to be fun for them! It is important to be patient with them and let them have a good experience. Put up the felt turkey body and see if they can guess who this is and ask them what the problem is with the turkey. Explain that he is bare and shouldn t go outside like this. Sing the chorus of the song with everyone tapping the steady beat on their legs. Have them, Close their eyes for a big surprise and put a feather behind each child. Once they have the feathers, start by singing your color first to show them how to sing and put the feather up on the turkey. Several children sing their color before going back to the song. This is a fun minor song that is easy to accompany on the guitar or ukulele. 48 19 Lesson Plan 19, Cont. Activity Title Comments What s Needed Solo Singing The Owl Song Baby Owl, Can You Fly? The Owl Song: Repeat song from last week. Baby Owl, Can You Fly? Place the mini spotted owl on your finger and hold it to look like it is sitting on the Branch (made by holding up your other arm, bent it at chest level). Explain to the children that the baby is just learning to fly and he seems to only try if he hears a child s voice slide up. The higher the voice he hears, the higher he seems to be able to fly. The baby owl visits each child to see how high the child can make him fly. If the child s voice doesn t go higher or there is not a response, the owl remains on the Branch. Encouraging words can follow such as, Would you like me to see if I can make him fly by sliding my voice up? or Would you like to try it together? Snowy Owl Puppet or Picture () Mini Owl Puppet or picture Orff Instruments In C Free Play to Sopranino (Exploration) (Parent Tip) Free Play To Sopranino: Play and stop when the sopranino plays. Parent Tip: One of the reasons why the Orff instruments are so wonderful for kids is that they can free play and have a positive music experience that s fun for them. They offer a much more appropriate playing experience than the fine motor skills, attention and focus needed for piano or violin. Rain On The Green Grass: Recite the rhyme as you keep the beat tapping the handles of the mallets together. Ask if they remember on what word they played the ocean drums last week ( Rain & Not on me ). Play very short or staccato on the instruments for, Rain and, Not on me on any bars they like, or you can have them tap their mallets together. It Rained on Anne: Recite the rhyme as you keep the beat tapping the handles of the mallets together. Play the instruments or tap the mallets together every time we say, Rained or, Rain. Explain they can play any way they like when we sing the rain songs. Start the recording! Activity Title Comments What s Needed Gathering Drum with Hello Song Kangaroos from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saëns Tideo Kangaroos: Find different ways to play the drum in response to the music. Tideo: When singing each child s name, have the parent finger the C chord as the child strums. Give the option of playing C to A minor on the ukulele. Review the vocabulary word, Accent, a beat that is louder than the others. Gathering Drum Guitar/Ukulele Movement One Misty, Moisty Morning (New) Vocabulary: Legato Staccato The Colors Are Gliding Discuss foggy weather. Have the children hide behind the scarves for the A section, pretending it is foggy weather. Move smoothly, cautiously through the room. For the B section, shake the scarves to the beat, and on, How do you do, they can shake each other s hands or bow to each other. You can surprise everyone by using a horn or other silly sound at the end. Introduce the vocabulary words. Suggest the A section will be legato, smooth and connected. The B section will be short, detached or staccato. Use the song, The Colors Are Gliding for a transition song to fold the scarves. Tip: Lynn uses white scarves but other colors can be used. Scarves (Horn) Instrument Kit Glockenspiel Ocean Drum One Misty, Moisty Morning Remove C s and F (blue and green bars) from the glockenspiel. Suggest to play very slowly, smooth and connected, legato on the glocks for the A section, making mysterious Fog music on any bars they like. Use the ocean drums to play on the A section, reminding them to tip it very slowly. Use hands or the mallets to keep the beat on the ocean drum. Start the recording. For the B section, play on the pink and red bar, keeping the beat. Play the beat again on the purple and pink. Ask the children which way they like best. Explain one is major and one is minor. Glocks in G (eminor) Ocean Drums Solo Singing CockA DoodleDoo Ask the children to sing back to the rooster. Practice echoing, Cockadoodledoo. Use the rooster puppet and sing the first verse, encouraging the children to sing the Cockadoodledoo. Dance and shake the shaker eggs for, Cockadoodle, cockadoodle, cockadoodledoo. Repeat that phrase multiple times. Pass out farm puppets or pictures to each child and encourage each child to sing for their animal. Example: If the child has the duck, sing, little duck sings, Quack, quack, quack ending with Little rooster sings, cockadoodle doo before repeating the, Cockadoodle, cockadoodle, cockadoodledoo part. With small classes you will have time to sing the entire phrase, Oh I love my little duck and my duck loves me before the solo. TIP: For large classes, use multiple cats, dogs, sheep or whatever you have more than one of and when you cue the solos, have all the sheep sing one after another. This activity will take a long time if you do a different animal for each child. If you have large classes and own the Beginners Counting Felt Set, you could use cats, dogs, ducks and frogs since there are 10 of each in the set.
