A full listing of ensembles can be found on page 14. HOW WE TEACH - Traditional and Suzuki-Based Approaches TRADITIONAL-BASED LEARNING of an instrument is generally for students who have already developed fine motor skills and are able to simultaneously focus on multiple facets of learning an instrument. This includes the ability to listen, read notes and the physical coordination of handling an instrument. Traditional methods are generally age-appropriate for children five and older, depending on the instrument, and uses a customized repertoire based on the student s needs and interests. SUZUKI-BASED LEARNING is recommended for all ages and abilities. This approach, developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, is based on how children learn their native language exposure, action and repetition. Pieces are learned by ear and played from memory, and lessons are paired with a weekly repertoire class that immerses students with others at their skill and age level. Core components of this approach are parental involvement and weekly musicianship class. Note reading is taught at the appropriate time. This approach is available for students taking lessons in strings, piano or flute. Interested in learning which approach is better for you? Contact Student Services at ext. 17 or info@thirdstreetmusicschool.org for more information.
