2 Welcome This season showcases some of the amazing young talent that is emerging on the international classical music stage, alongside established artists performing at the very peak of their creative powers. Our artist in residence this year is fantastic young violinist Esther Yoo. I was blown away by her performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra last year and by her incredibly generous commitment to the education project we presented at that concert. She was an obvious choice for this role this season and Im really excited about the projects with young people that were planning around her residency. Esther will also introduce us to two of her fellow BBC New Generation artists both of whom, like her, have gone on to enjoy major international solo careers. Our composer in residence Jay Richardson, whose laulan was premiered with such brilliance by Esther Yoo last year, will continue his residency throughout 2017/18. You will also get the opportunity to hear two exciting young soloists. Pianist Daniel Kharitonov will play Beethovens 4th Piano Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and last years BBC Young Musician of the Year winner Sheku Kanneh-Mason will play Haydns Cello Concerto No. 1 with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Were thrilled to be welcoming back the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the first time. since They will be conducted by their sensational new Music Director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla who has been electrifying audiences since taking up the role last year. In what is sure to be a major highlight of the series, the Philharmonia Orchestra will bring their inspirational Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen to the Corn Exchange for the very first time. We are delighted that Boldfield Computing have agreed to continue their Series sponsorship for a second consecutive year as their Managing Director, Andy Irvine, shares with us an abiding passion for bringing the very best classical music from around the world into the citys landmark venue. Welcome from our Series sponsor Andy Irvine, Managing Director of our Series sponsor, Boldfield Computing talks about why he has chosen to support the Classical Series: It is partly the fact that I love classical music and have done for many years. It is something to do with the fact that every single classical series performance this season is going to be sensational without exception. But its more than that. Our sponsorship of the Classical Series not only ensures Cambridge Live can continue to bring the worlds best orchestras and artists to the City, it also supports the Create educational programme, giving younger people the opportunity to become involved in classical music in new and exciting ways (see page 17 for more information). Its no wonder that were so passionate about the Classical Series and so proud to be the Series sponsor. Steve Bagnall, Managing Director, Cambridge Live 2 Photo: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 3
3 Introducing our Artist in Residence Esther Yoo I am very excited and honoured to be the Artist in Residence at Cambridge Corn Exchange. I have great memories from performing there last year with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Maestro Ashkenazy. The audience was very warm and I also enjoyed the opportunity to premiere a wonderful contemporary work, laulan by Jay Richardson, alongside some very talented young musicians in collaboration with the Cambridgeshire Music Service. I look forward to returning for more projects and to connect with the Cambridge audiences again! Esther Yoo Monday 2 Oct pm The Z.E.N Trio With Corn Exchange Artist in Residence Esther Yoo Haydn Piano Trio No. 10 in E flat major, Hoboken XV:10 Brahms Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8 Dvorák Piano Trio op.90 Dumky Trio As a special addition to the 2017/18 Cambridge Classical Concert Series, we are delighted to introduce our new Artist in Residence Esther Yoo performing alongside one of Europes most exciting and dynamic trios. The Z.E.N. Trio, formed with fellow BBC New Generation Artists, Zhang Zuo (piano) and Narek Hakhnazaryan (cello) first came together in Since then we have performed several times together and have also recorded an album. We are greatly looking forward to performing in Cambridge on October 2, especially as this will be the first concert of our first tour together in the UK and China. Esther Yoo Tickets: 25.50/ Students and Under 16s: Under 26s: in zones B & C This performance is free of charge to anyone taking out a full series (8 concert) subscription. 4 Wednesday 11 Oct pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Orchestra in Residence Daniel Kharitonov performs Beethoven Conductor Christoph Altstaedt Piano Daniel Kharitonov Mendelssohn A Midsummer Nights Dream Overture Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 Dvorák Symphony No. 7 Thursday 2 Nov pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Orchestra in Residence Janina Fialkowska performs Chopin Conductor Barry Wordsworth Piano Janina Fialkowska Beethoven Coriolan Overture Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 Vaughan Williams The Wasps Overture Elgar Enigma Variations This is a programme to capture the imagination, as Mendelssohn transports you to Shakespeares mythical, magical land with his A Midsummer Nights Dream Overture. Beethovens Concerto draws you in with its delicate opening building to its climactic finish leading to Dvořáks emotional Seventh Symphony, in which audiences can feel the nostalgia and love Dvořák felt for his Czech homeland. Supported by James Williams, RPO Managing Director Imagine a boy of eighteen in love for the first time...then add to the fact that this boy happens to be a musical genius and you get the Chopin F minor Piano Concerto. This is a piece of total perfection, full of drama, full of technical wizardry, and full of melodies to melt your heart. To play this piece, so full of emotion and excitement, is a dream come true for a pianist. For the audience it will hopefully be a total delight. 5 Thursday 18 Jan pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Conductor Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla Violin Ning Feng Haydn Symphony No. 7 (Le Midi) Bruch Scottish Fantasy Bartok Concerto for Orchestra For our first visit to Cambridge in over seven years, we wanted to bring something brilliant and exciting that shows off the whole orchestra. Bartoks Concerto for Orchestra does this superbly, and is one of the most thrilling rides in 20th century music. Bartok was heavily influenced by folk music of his native Hungary, so we thought it would be fun to precede this with Bruchs colourful Scottish Fantasy, which also plays around with folk tunes. Stephen Maddock OBE, Chief Executive, CBSO Tuesday 20 Feb pm European Union Chamber Orchestra Director Hans-Peter Hofmann Cello Sheku Kanneh-Mason Handel Suite Water Music Haydn Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Delius Two Aquarelles Mozart Symphony No. 29 This is opportunity to hear the latest wonderfully talented BBC Young Musician of the Year in Haydns virtuoso first cello concerto alongside Handels ever-uplifting suite from his Water Music. Theres a distinctly watery touch too in Delius atmospheric Two Aquarelles followed by Mozarts brilliant Symphony No.29. 6 Wednesday 7 Mar pm Russian State Philharmonic Conductor Valery Polyansky Piano Valentina Lisitsa Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty Suite Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 Rachmaninovs Piano Concerto No. 3 began to overshadow its more famous older brother when the film Shine (about pianist David Helfgott) was released. This intensely physical (for the soloist!) piece is joined by Tchaikovskys romantic Sleeping Beauty suite and his emotional and profoundly personal 4th symphony with its ebullient final movement harking back to his nationalistic enthusiasm for Russias folk heritage. Steve Bagnall, Cambridge Live Managing Director Saturday 5 May pm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Orchestra in Residence Esther Yoo performs Glazunov Conductor Michal Nesterowicz Violin Esther Yoo Grieg Holberg Suite Glazunov Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No. 1 I have such great memories of performing at the Cambridge Corn Exchange last year alongside the Philharmonia Orchestra and Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy. I am very excited to return in May 2018 as Artist-in-Residence of both the venue and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom I will be performing a concerto that is very special to me, the Glazunov Violin Concerto, which I also recorded for my début album last year. 7 Sunday 20 May pm Dresden Philharmonic Conductor Michael Sanderling Violin Jennifer Pike Weber Euryanthe Overture Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Beethoven Symphony No. 5 For his 5th symphony, Beethoven composed five striking opening bars that have become iconic and yet theres so much more to the piece than those instantly recognisable notes. The euphoric finale is every bit as exciting as the opening. Tchaikovskys dazzling Violin Concerto is one of the foremost concertos of the Romantic era and is packed full of explosive violin pyrotechnics which Jennifer Pike performs with consummate skill. Steve Bagnall, Cambridge Live Managing Director Sunday 24 Jun pm Philharmonia Orchestra Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen Horn Soloist Katy Woolley Beethoven Overture, Namensfeier Mozart Horn Concerto No. 4, K495 Beethoven Symphony No. 2 Were delighted to be bringing our Principal Conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen to Cambridge for the first time. His take on core Classical repertoire is influenced by both European and American heritage as well as his own work as a composer. This concert therefore promises fresh and exciting accounts of Beethovens Namensfeier Overture and his Second Symphony. It is also a great pleasure to give an opportunity for the audience to hear the unrivalled playing of our Principal Horn, Katy Woolley, as soloist in Mozarts best known horn concerto. 8 Create Cambridge Classical Series education programme Through Create, we, along with Create partner Millers Music, want to open up the world of Classical music to younger people in Cambridge and the surrounding areas. What greater gift could we give to young aspiring musicians in this city than the opportunity to perform alongside, and learn from, the world class musicians that perform as part of our Classical Series. Through Create we aim to: help nurture emerging musical talent give young musicians the opportunity to perform alongside professional artists and to take part in a variety of inspiring creative workshops provide a platform for young people to engage with classical music for the first time Previous opportunities have included a large-scale percussion project, where school children from Cambridge worked with Dame Evelyn Glennie to create a piece of music that was then performed in the Corn Exchange. This year, young brass players got the chance to perform alongside Alison Balsom in front of a 1000 strong audience. Whether we introduce young people to classical music for the first time, or help them take the next step in developing their musical talents, these ambitious projects make a huge difference to these young people and help secure the future Become a Create Supporter Donate as you book and make a difference every time you book a ticket for a Classical concert A donation of 100 or more will make a significant contribution to our education project featuring Artist in Residence, Esther Yoo To find out more please contact Elaine Midgley, Business Development Director on or elaine.midgley@cambridgelivetrust.co.uk If you pay tax, you can also Gift Aid your donation, increasing its value by 25% at no additional cost to you. Simon Pollard, Managing Director of Millers Music Create Partner Feedback from the Evelyn Glennie project in 2016: Thank you for giving us the great opportunity to perform with you all at the Corn Exchange, it has been an eye-opening experience and given me a lot more confidence to perform! 2016 workshop participant. Feedback from the Alison Balsom project in 2017: Thank you and all the staff that made this event possible. My daughter Anya had a most wonderful and positive brass experience.
