Yes Science Sound To identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating To recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear To find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it To find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it. To recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases Yes- Investigating making sounds. Use rice/ tuning fork on a drum to show vibration. Link to DT- Making an instrument which uses vibration to make a sound. Explore where sounds come from. Understand how sound is made and that sound waves can be seen through vibrations- tuning fork into water experiment. Discuss how sounds travel through different materials and which materials sounds waves best travel throughdesign an investigation. Investigate and measure how far different sounds travel- children work in groups to design and carry out investigation. Explore musical instruments and discuss how the size of the tube/ instruments effects the sounds it produces- visit from Brass teacher focussing on the
3 instruments he has. Make simple instruments where the strings can be changed to alter the pitch of the note made. Paired/ grup work to design and make. Visit to Centre for Life to continue exploration of sound booked for after half term. Geography No Geography this half term. History- The Romans Can they plot recent history on a timeline using centuries? Can they place periods of history on a timeline showing periods of time? Can they use their mathematical skills to round up timedifferences into centuries and decades? Can they explain how events from the past has helped shape our lives? Do they appreciate that wars have happened from a very long time ago and it is often associated with invasion, conquering or religious differences? Do they know that people who lived in the past cooked and travelled differently and used different weapons Yes Visit to Binchester to learn more about the Romans. Links to speaking and listening- drama exploring Boudicca. Roman visitor. Look at British history timeline- see where the Romans fit into it. Order different periods chronologically. Link to previous knowledge covered in other years. Explore the terms invade and settle- link to current World situation of different groups of people moving for different reasons. Watch BBC clips- why were the Romans so
4 from ours? Do they recognise that the lives of wealthy people were very different from those of poor people? Do they appreciate how items found belonging to the past are helping us to build up an accurate picture of how people lived in the past? Can they research two versions of an event and say how they differ? Can they research what it was like for a child in a given period from the past and use photographs and illustrations to present their findings? Can they give more than one reason to support an historical argument? Can they communicate knowledge and understanding orally and in writing and offer points of view based upon what they have found out? Pupil will be taught about the Roman empire and its impact on Britain Learning will include: a. Julius Caesar s attempted invasion in BC b. the Roman Empire by AD 42 and the power of its army c. successful invasion by Claudius and conquest, including Hadrian s Wall d. British resistance, for example, Boudica successful- children learn about the Roman army and life of a soldier. Planbee activity- draw and label soldier- make notes about the army. Binchester trip- recount follow up. Choose photos to talk about- explain what they were doing and what they leant about the Romans. Boudicca- pp showing who were the Celts and who was Boudicca. Look at events from both points of view. Write as if Boudicca retelling what happened. What did the Romans bring to Britain- children research what they introduced and left behind. Class Assembly. Roman visitor booked.
5 e. "Romanisation" of Britain: sites such as Caerwent and the impact of technology, culture and beliefs, including early Christianity RE How and why do people show care for each other? Yes Discuss what is meant by being a good neighbour? Who are our neighbours? British Values link. What did Jesus mean by love thy neighbour? Read Good Samaritan- discuss different people s choices and motivations. Drama/ tableaux/ freeze frame activity- add thought and speech bubbles. Research work of Christian charities. Compare and contrast with Judaism/ Sihkism and how their beliefs affect their actions. Explore the image of Jesus light in different Bible stories. Why do Christians call Jesus the Light of the World. Look at paintings and stain glass windows which portray Jesus as being the Light of the World. Design a stain glass window showing this image.
6 What messages of light does the World need today? PE Games/ Gymnastics (sequences and core strength)/ Swimming To play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending Balls- various sizes. Hockey sticks. Goals. On the attack- children develop a range of attack and defensive skills through a range of small group and whole class games. To develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance To compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Invasion games Music Charanga resources. Ukelele Children will be taught to: To play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression To improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the interrelated dimensions of music To listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory Instruments Recorders, percussion instruments, sheet music, CD of The Four Seasons/ Puccini Operas. Romans songs- linked to class assembly. Durham music services to deliver. Learn to play a wide range of music of various styles on the recorder. Create their own rhythms on various percussion instruments and with stamps and claps. Read sheet music.

Perform to an audience in whole school assembly with parents present. Class assembly- learn 2 songs ART and DT Roman Art and Artist- To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials Mosaics Italian artists Imagery of Roman life Roman Money bags and shoes Mosaic activities. Children make their own pots and add Roman pattern and numbers. Children design and create shields inspired by Roman ones. To learn about great artists, architects and designers in history. To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products Linked to Literacy, Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, children create their own mythical creaturescutting different body part and sticking them to form a creature.
