1 MUSIC 57283: FALL 2010 MUSIC HISTORY I SECTION A Professor Stephen Schultz Lectures: M/W 1:30-2:50pm Room: CFA A2 Office: Studio for Creative Inquiry, CFA 111 Office Hours: M/W 12:30-1:20pm Telephone: (412) OVERVIEW: This class will be an in-depth analytical survey of music of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical Periods. It will emphasize selected genres and forms by representative composers in order to trace the evolution of musical style and to clarify the main characteristics of these periods. OBJECTIVES: (from the Bond's textbook) - Students will gain a greater understanding of music's emotional power and its role in society. Students will gain a sense of changing musical styles across time. Students will gain a greater ability to talk and write about music ASSESSMENT: - Students successfully completing a course in music history, with areaspecific literature that will provide appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience to prepare them for their careers. Students gaining an intimate knowledge of specific repertoire and pedagogical methods and how they are applied to the development of knowledge and performance skills. Students demonstrating the ability to clearly communicate musical ideas and concepts through oral and written skills. REQUIRED MATERIALS: TEXT: A History Of Music In Western Culture Third Edition Mark Evan Bonds Pearson Prentice Hall 2010 SUPPLEMENTS: Anthology of Scores to A History of Music in Western Culture: Volume I: Antiquity through the Baroque Era Volume II: The Classical Era through the Twentieth Century Mark Evan Bonds Pearson Prentice Hall 2006

2 NOTE: Please bring the appropriate volume of the Anthology to each class session. It is not necessary to bring the textbook to class. ATTENDANCE: All students are required to attend every lecture. No unexcused absences will be tolerated and these absences will affect your grade. Students must assume full responsibility for all missed work. GRADING: In Class Analysis/Instrument Report 11/3 20% In Class Quizzes 20% Shared Midterm Exam Online, Week VIII 30% Final Presentations In Class on 11/29 and 12/1 30% CO-TEACHING: I will be way on tour for five weeks this semester and Christopher Ruth, from the University of Pittsburgh, has graciously offered to teach for me when I am gone. LISTENING: Repertoire and Listening for Musicians III Paul Johnston The listening requirements for this class are Music 57289: Repertoire and Listening for Musicians III, offered on-line. For Prof. Johnston s class, you will need to purchase the following scores: Beethoven Complete Quartets (Dover full score) Mozart Requiem (Dover full score) Handel Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, online at IN CLASS ANALYSIS: Throughout the semester, we will be looking at musical scores from the two Anthology books. Please be prepared to discuss the appropriate pieces at each class session. INSTRUMENT RESEARCH: During the semester, you will research the history of your own instrument, both online and in the library. Be prepared to discuss your results in class on 11/3. IN-CLASS QUIZZES: They will be based on the weekly readings and will be a surprise. MIDTERM EXAM: The Midterm will be a shared exam with the online Repertoire and Listening for Musicians III. It will be administered by Paul Johnston, jointly graded by both of us and will count for 30% of your grade for BOTH classes.

3 FINAL PRESENTATIONS: November 29 and December 1 In the last two class sessions, student groups will give a 20-minute oral presentation on an approved topic of their choice. This will be the final exam for the class. Be as creative and imaginative as possible, using CDs, DVDs, and other materials to illustrate your topic. 6 TO ACCESS ONLINE MUSIC ON BLACKBOARD: The weekly music listening assignments are posted on Blackboard. You will first need RealPlayer installed on your computer. This can be downloaded for free by going to and choosing the correct player for your computer's system. 1. Click on URL (on the blackboard site). 2. Enter User ID and Password. This will launch Real Player and you should begin hearing the music. PLEASE NOTE: If using a Mac, you may need to download Real One Player instead. RealPlayer may not work with some model Macs.
