1 Guidelines fr Music 48 (Lessns fr Credit) (Revised 14 September 2016) I. MUSIC 48 BASICS Music 48 prvides an pprtunity fr dedicated music students t cntinue their vcal and instrumental studies while at Swarthmre. If yu are qualified t enrll in the prgram, yu will be able t: Ø Chse yur wn private teacher, with the advice f Swarthmre's music faculty; Ø Perfrm fr and meet with Swarthmre music faculty members t discuss yur prgress; Ø Earn 0.5 academic credit per semester; Ø Enrll every semester withut limit; and Ø Earn subsidies t help yu pay fr yur lessns. The prgram stipulates 10 ne-hur weekly lessns per semester. Please read these guidelines carefully and retain them. They utline yur respnsibilities under the prgram. The Music and Dance Administrative Crdinatr, Bernadette Dunning, is the best persn t turn t fr mre infrmatin r guidance. Eligibility 1. Ensemble Requirement Participatin in Music 48 is a privilege, intended t supprt the cmmitted members f Swarthmre's musical cmmunity. It is, therefre, available nly t members in gd standing f these facultydirected ensembles: Ø Chrus Ø Gamelan (Indnesian Percussin Orchestra) Ø Jazz Ensemble Ø Orchestra Ø Wind Ensemble Ø Salsa Dance/Drumming Ø Taik Drum Ensemble Ø Nte: Chamber Music (Music 47) des nt satisfy the Music 48 ensemble requirement. 2. Academic Credit Music 48 students must enrll in Music 48 fr 0.5 credit. Membership in a Departmental Ensemble is required, but enrlling in an ensemble (fr 0.5 academic credit) is ptinal. 3. Majr Music 48 students can pursue a majr in any department. There is n expectatin that they will majr in music. Music majrs and minrs, hwever, may receive higher levels f subsidy; see belw. Lessn Subsidies In exchange fr actively participating in the life f the Department, all Music 48 students receive subsidies t defray the cst f their lessns, as fllws. 1. Merit-based subsidies Merit-based subsidies are given at the fllwing three levels: - 60% (the student pays 40% f the cst f lessns) - 80% (the student pays 20% f the cst f lessns) - 100% ("Freeman Schlars"; the student pays nthing)

2 2. Need-based subsidies A limited number f need-based subsidies are awarded t eligible students wh wuld therwise lack the funds t participate in Music 48. These are awarded based n a cnfidential applicatin t the Department's Administrative Crdinatr, and nrmally bst a student's subsidy by ne level. 3. Music Majrs and Minrs Students wh have been frmally accepted as music majrs and minrs (and wh have been assessed at any level belw 100%) will receive subsidies f 100%. 4. Subsidy Caps Music 48 requires 10 ne-hur lessns per semester, assuming a nrm f $80 per lessn. Thus, the maximum subsidy fr students at the 60% level is $ (60% f $800); the maximum subsidy fr students at the 80% level is $ In recgnitin f the higher csts f pre-prfessinal training, students at the 100% level (Freeman Schlars) may receive a maximum subsidy f $1500 per student per semester, including reasnable transprtatin csts t and frm lessns. 5. Subsidized Cachings Freeman Schlars and students assessed at the 80% level may apply t receive additinal funding t supprt individual caching sessins with a prfessinal accmpanist. This is particularly recmmended fr vcalists. The specific number f cachings, and the amunt f departmental subsidy fr them, varies each year depending n the verall funding available t the prgram. 6. Supprt is available fr a single set f lessns each semester. If a declared music majr r minr is interested in taking lessns n tw instruments in a given semester thrugh the Music 48 prgram, a special request must be submitted t the chair - in writing - in advance f the auditin. Althugh Music 48 is limited t students wh are members f Departmental Ensembles, the Department is als able t supprt a few students wh, as beginners, are nt eligible t participate in the full prgram. II. HOW TO ENROLL IN MUSIC Jin a Department Ensemble t fulfill the Ensemble Requirement Ø Sign-up sheets and ther infrmatin abut Ensemble auditins are psted n the Department Bulletin Bards, ppsite Lang Music #401, during Orientatin. Ø It is expected that Music 48 students participate in an ensemble n the instrument r vice fr which they receive Music 48 funding and credit. Ø Keybard players, guitarists, and thers whse instruments are nt nrmally fund in standing Department Ensembles can qualify fr Music 48 by jining the Cllege Chrus, the Balinese Gamelan, Salsa/Dance and Drum r the Taik Ensemble. These musicians must be at the intermediate level r abve, and shuld cnsult with the directr f the ensemble in questin befre enrlling in Music 48. Ø As nted abve, Chamber Music (Music 47) des nt fulfill the Department Ensemble requirement. 2. Music 48 Preliminary Assessment Students wh wish t enrll in Music 48 fr the fall semester are heard by members f the music faculty during the first week f classes in September. Students wh wish t enter the prgram fr the

3 spring semester are heard during the exam perid in December. The faculty listens t each student perfrm fr 3-4 minutes. Here is the prcedure: Ø Sign up fr an appintment t play/sing fr us. A sign-up sheet will be psted utside the Department ffice (Lang Music Building, #401). Ø Sign up t rehearse in advance with a prfessinal accmpanist, if applicable. Perfrming with accmpaniment is mandatry if yur piece requires it. Ø Prepare a representative fur-minute excerpt that is nt t difficult fr yur level f technical develpment. Ø The faculty is mst eager t hear: i) Technical mastery f material that is apprpriate fr yur level; and ii) Musicality Incming students ranked at 60% level are strng and highly mtivated musicians wh can be expected t make excellent nging cntributins t their Departmental Ensemble. Students ranked at the 80% level demnstrate unusual accmplishment and leadership ptential significantly abve average. Students at the 100% level are cnsidered "pre-prfessinal" whse level f accmplishment equals that f students at tp cnservatries. When yu play fr the faculty jury, have fun! 3. Find a Private Teacher It is yur respnsibility t find a private teacher during the first tw weeks f the semester. A number f utstanding instrumental and vcal teachers cme t campus t wrk with Swarthmre students; they typically pst sign-up sheets n the departmental bulletin bard ppsite the Department Office (Lang Music #401). Vice students are particularly frtunate, in that we prvide a vice studi supervised by the faculty, as well as sessins with a first rate vcal cach. Of curse, many ther fine teachers have their studis ff-campus, in Philadelphia and elsewhere. We require that yu cnsult with us s that we can help yu find the teacher best suited t yur needs. Submit a Music 48 Applicatin Music 48 applicatins are submitted directly t Bernadette Dunning in the Department ffice. The deadline t register is psted n the Department website. Yu may nt register fr Music 48 thrugh the Cllege Registrar. The applicatin is due in the Department Office by the psted deadline. The Department will register yu fr 0.5 academic credit, pass/fail. This des nt affect yur ptin t take ther academic curses pass/fail. Please nte: Music 48 students are permitted t carry 5.5 credits withut incurring an extra tuitin charge.

4 III. DURING THE SEMESTER 1. Lessns and Cachings a. Yu must take 10 ne-hur lessns during the semester, all with the same teacher. b. The Department expects that yu will be well prepared fr all f yur lessns; that yu will be prmpt, and that yu will bserve yur teacher's plicy fr advance ntificatin in the event that yu need t reschedule a lessn. c. 60% and 80% level students: Pay yur share f the lessn fee first t yur teacher; the Department will remit the remaining balance later in the semester directly t yur teacher. Meeting yur financial bligatin is a requirement f the Music 48 prgram. d. Additinal Cachings: additinal sessins with a prfessinal accmpanist are available in sme cases. Please cnsult Bernadette Dunning t apply fr this benefit. 2. Music 48 Paper The Music 48 paper is an pprtunity fr yu t bring additinal tls t yur grwth as a musician. It enables yu t wrk with a member f Swarthmre's music faculty t enhance yur critical and research skills in music, thereby develping a strnger and mre authritative apprach t interpretatin. a. The paper must be a minimum f tw pages f thughtful inquiry int the histrical/cultural cntext f the primary cmpsitin yu are preparing fr perfrmance at the end f the semester. It must als include a detailed bibligraphy. In additin, it shuld include a brief, self-assessment f hw yu have prgressed in yur lessns during the semester. b. The music faculty has created a set f questins t guide yu in yur research. Please cnsult them; they are available n the Department website. Dnna Furnier, the perfrming arts librarian, has als prepared an n-line guide t Music 48 research. Firsttime Music 48 students, in particular, shuld make an appintment t talk with Dnna befre they begin wrking n the paper. c. The deadline fr the Music 48 paper may be fund n the Department website. Please submit a hard cpy t Bernadette Dunning in the Department ffice. Late papers and electrnic cpies are never accepted. Music 48 Advisrs will give a nn-binding letter grade t each student. Failure t turn in the Music 48 Paper n time will result in a grade f N Credit and lss f subsidy. d. After enrllment in Music 48, yu will be assigned a faculty member t be yur Music 48 Advisr. Tward the end f the semester yu will have an individual meeting with that faculty member t discuss yur cmpleted paper. This meeting is a required cmpnent f yur Music 48 cursewrk. 3. End f Semester Perfrmance During the reading perid at the end f each semester, each Music 48 student perfrms fr the music faculty a 3-4 minute excerpt f the wrk that was the subject f the Music 48 paper. This is an pprtunity fr yu t share what yu've learned during the semester with the cmmunity. The prcedure fr this is similar t the Music 48 Preliminary Assessment. Yu will sign up fr an appintment t play fr us, and als t wrk in advance with an accmpanist if applicable. We welcme the larger cmmunity at this event; please invite friends t cme hear yur perfrmance!

5 Participatin in this perfrmance is required f all Music 48 students except fr thse secnd semester senirs wh have perfrmed a senir recital r a senir cmprehensive presentatin. Secnd semester senirs wh have perfrmed a prminent sl with a Department Ensemble may apply in writing t have this requirement waived. 4. Criteria fr Assessment Given the lng-term nature f musical grwth we hpe and expect that mst students will re-enrll in the prgram each semester. Therefre, we assess all Music 48 students at the end f the semester t mnitr their prgress. The music faculty's assessment takes int accunt the fllwing criteria: Ø The culminating perfrmance (this is an imprtant factr, but nt the sle ne). As nted abve, the faculty is mst eager t hear: Technical mastery f material that is apprpriate fr that student's level; Musicality Ø A written evaluatin by the student's private teacher; Ø An infrmal evaluatin by the directr f the Departmental Ensemble; Ø The Music 48 paper - which will be given a nn-binding letter grade; Ø Other departmental service (e.g., participating in multiple Departmental Ensembles, chamber music, and ther frms f service t the musical cmmunity). In sme cases, the faculty prvides written cmments t students at the end f the semester. Academic credit is given n a CR/NCR basis; this des nt diminish yur fur ptins t take academic curses CR/NCR. III. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIVATE STUDY 1. Private Lessns, Nt fr Credit Many students at Swarthmre Cllege take lessns privately, independent f the Music 48 prgram. The department is happy t refer students t apprpriate teachers, and t prvide practice rms, but n academic credit r subsidy is available fr this. 2. Sttt Beginners Prgram Students wh have never studied an instrument r vice befre and wh wish t begin at Swarthmre can apply fr funding thrugh the Sttt Prgram. It is pen t students enrlled in Music 002 ("Hw t Read Music") wh have been identified as a Sttt Beginner by the Prfessr. These students may receive up t ten 30-minute pian lessns during the semester, but they cannt receive academic credit fr this. 3. Keybard Lessns fr Beginners If yu d nt play the pian but wish t begin, and if yu can already read music fluently, we recmmend that yu take Music 11 (Frm, Harmny, and Cunterpint I) and Music 40A (Musicianship). Students in that curse with minimal keybard skills are given a weekly, 30-minute keybard lessn free f charge as part f their cursewrk. Prerequisites: ability t read treble and bass clef; knwledge f majr and minr scales and key signatures. Three Music 48 Case Studies Student A came frm a public schl with a limited arts curriculum. She lved t sing but culd barely read music. In the fall semester f her first year at Swarthmre, she enrlled in MUSI 002 (Reading and Making Music: the Basics f Ntatin). She cncurrently tk vice lessns in the Sttt Beginners Prgram withut receiving academic credit. By December f the fall semester she culd read music well enugh t be accepted int the Cllege Chrus, s she auditined fr Chrus and fr Music 48. In the spring semester f her first year

6 she enrlled in the Chrus (MUSIC 043) and cncurrently tk vice lessns thrugh Music 48, bth fr 0.5 academic credit. The music faculty ffered her a 60% lessn subsidy based n her auditin, but after cnsulting with the Financial Aid Office the Department bsted her subsidy t 100% n accunt f financial need. Student B played saxphne in a high schl jazz band. He tk a few private sax lessns during his first tw years f high schl. On arrival at Swarthmre he auditined fr the Jazz Ensemble and als fr the music faculty at the Music 48 auditins. The music faculty awarded him a lessn subsidy f 60%. He enrlled in the Jazz Ensemble (MUSI 041) and in Music 48, bth fr 0.5 academic credit. He paid a ttal f $320 t his private saxphne teacher; the Department cvered the remaining $480 fr his lessns. Student C studied classical pian with a private teacher frm ages On arriving at Swarthmre she auditined fr Music 48 and was awarded an 80% schlarship fr her first semester. She jined the Taik Ensemble (Japanese drumming and dance) t satisfy the ensemble requirement. During the fall semester she paid a ttal f $160 t her pian teacher; the Department cvered the remaining $640. She made utstanding prgress during the fall semester and was therefre awarded a 100% schlarship fr the spring semester.
