Ho amazing! What a great, poerful sound for such a small creature! 3 9 10 Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp So ack they all ent to the palace It as decorated specially for the occasion, ith right lights and eautiful floers 101 Festive Palace All the court as gathered in the Emperor's reception room Right in front of the Emperor's throne as fixed a little golden rod, here the Nightingale could perch as he sang Everyone's gaze as turned toards the little, plain looking grey ird And he egan to sing n Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp 9 Nightingale Sings for the Emperor U U U It as so eautiful that tears streamed out of the Emperor's eyes, rolled don his cheeks, and dripped on his roe This is so onderful, said the Emperor You shall have one of my royal gold slippers to hang aout your neck as a reard! I am honored, Your Highness, said the ird, ut to see tears in your eyes is a rich reard and more than enough Well, everyone at court as so impressed ith the Nightingale! But there as no one there to ind it up, and the Emperor as too eak to do it himself So Death kept looking at the Emperor in the face, nodding to everything the hispers e saying All around it as terrily, shockingly quiet n Hp Fl Hp The Emperor lay pale and eak in his ig ed, not moving, his eyes closed The moon shone in through the indo The artificial ird sat on its fancy cushion eside him He could hardly reathe; he felt such a eight on him He opened his eyes a little, and hat did he see Why, Death as sitting right there on his chest, holding the Emperor's Golden Sord, and the Emperor's Imperial Banner, and the Emperor's Great Cron! And from amongst the folds of the velvet ed-curtains many little faces peered out, some lovely, some hideous, and all kinds in eteen These ere all the Emperor's deeds-the good, the not-so-good, and the ordinary---coming to remind him of ho he had lived Rememer this Rememer that they hispered to him 22 1 Terrified Underscore Sandlocks --slo ad li, continuously ith random changes of speed It as unearale--all the things they ere shoing him He as very frightened In fact, he as terrified! It had heard that the Emperor as ill, and had come to help comfort him and ring him hope And as he sang, a miraculous thing happened The hispering voices gre fainter and fainter Finally they died aay completely Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp Fl Hp And then, an even greater miracle-- Death egan to listen! The Emperor's lood coursed through his veins ith ne energy, and the color egan to come ack into his cheeks Sing more, little ird, said Death "Only if you give ack the Emperor's Golden Sord," said the ird "It'd a deal!" said Death Only if you give me the Emperor's Imperial Banner, said the ird A orthy trade, a orthy trade, ansered Death So the ird sang again And hen the ird stopped, Death said, "Sing more!" Of course, of course, ust keep on singing! said Death And no that they had the treasures ack from Death, the ird kept on singing, ut a different song He sang aout quiet churchyards, the ells ringing in the steeples, and the roses over the graves U And hen he stopped, Death pleaded, Don't stop, don't stop! But no you have saved my life! Ho can I ever repay you You have already given me the greatest gift possile---the tears in your eyes hen you heard my song the first time These are like eels for a singer But no, rest I ill sing to help you regain your strength hile you sleep The Emperor slept And hen he aoke, he as refreshed and ell! The Nightingale still sat there, singing The Emperor got up out of ed and put on his imperial roes Dear Nightingale! You must stay here ith me alays! he said You can sing henever you like, and I ill reak the other ird into a thousand pieces!
