1 2017/2018 Semester 2 Electives for 3 rd and 4 th Year Students Modules indicated with an asterisk* are open to NUS students Compositional Engagement 1) *MUT3213 Romantic Styles, 4 MCs (Dr Chen Zhangyi) Thursday 10-12noon, SR8 This module begins with an overview of Beethoven s music and his influence on contemporaneous and later 19 th century composers. The heart of this course explores the divide between absolute and programme music. Leipzigerisch composers (Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms) versus the New German School (Berlioz, Liszt). Nationalism is included. 2) *MUT3212 Modal Counterpoint, 4 MCs (Dr Nick Omiccioli) Thursday 2-4pm, SR8 Modal Counterpoint focuses on the music of Palestrina and his contemporaries, which is a largely linear style. In this course, students will study how melodic lines create harmony, as opposed to the concept of yielding melody from harmony. A progressive and musical approach is taken in this course. It begins with the introduction of elements of style and an aural immersion. The course gradually proceeds from two-voice counterpoint to three, and even four-voice counterpoint. 3) *MUT3223 Early 20 th Century Music, 4 MCs (Ms Adeline Wong) Thursday 2-4pm, SR4 This module introduces students to the compositional ideas developed in the early twentieth century ( ). It provides students the skills and techniques for analysing this repertoire and composing music in this style. Perspectives will include not only the musical materials of these works but also some insights into their cultural context and historical placement. 4) MUT3215 Fundamentals of Composition, 4MCs (Ms Adeline Wong) Thursday 10-12noon, SR3 This module looks at recent approaches to form, melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture. It is appropriate for students who are interested in exploring music composition in more depth but are not majoring in music composition. It encourages individual creative writing while exploring contemporary techniques of music from 1920 to present.

2 5) MUT4201 Graduate Theory Preparation, 4 MCs (Ms Adeline Wong) Tuesday 2-4pm, SR4 The module reviews key concepts and skills commonly assessed on graduate music school theory entrance exams. These include 4-part voice leading, 18 th century contrapuntal techniques, post-tonal analysis, and common forms. This module assumes students are already familiar with these skills but are in need of reviewing them before entering graduate school. It is, therefore, appropriate for fourth year conservatory students whose future plans include graduate level studies in music. Contextual Engagement 1) *MUH3203 Opera and its History, 4 MCs (Dr Marc Rochester) Tue, 9-11am lecture at SR4 Fri, 9-10am tutorial at SR4 This module traces the history of opera from the birth of modern opera (around 1600) to the present day. It also investigates the relationship between music and the stage by looking at incidental music to plays and the modern musical. It will study the social and political dimension of opera within the context of the principal operatic nations - Italy, Germany, France, the UK and the USA as well as in the so-called emerging cultures of Africa, Asia and South America. Operatic conventions within Indian and Chinese cultures will be studied and placed in relationship to the main trends of operatic development within the general flow of western art. 2) *MUH4203 Music Criticism, 4 MCs (Dr Marc Rochester) Mon,10-12noon, SR4 This module aims to equip students with the skills necessary to assess a musical activity intelligently and coherently through both the written and the spoken word. It will also investigate the influence of criticism on both performers and audiences and see how it has affected attitudes on music as both a creative and passive activity. It looks at the history of music criticism and its functions, it investigates the various outlets for music criticisms and assesses their relative values, and it studies the place of social media both as a platform for musical criticism and as an outlet for valued subjective comment. Students enrolling on this module must have first-class English speaking and writing skills and a working but not specialist knowledge of music theory and history.

3 GE Modules 1) *GEK1054 Social and Cultural Studies Through Music, 4 MCs (A/P Ty Constante) Tue 12-2pm tutorial Fri 12-2pm lecture at SR8 This module provides across-cultural introduction to music both as an art and as a human, sociocultural phenomenon. Through lectures, reading and listening assignments, and actually playing different styles of music, students will learn how music works, why people listen to and make music, what its roles are in a society, and how these things vary in different cultures. The module introduces a variety of musical styles and cultures that represent an enormous wealth of human experience. At the end of the course the students will have access to a much wider variety of music to listen to, participate in, enjoy, and understand. 2) *GEM1030 Art and Identity, 4 MCs (A/P Greg Petersen) Students to attend anyone of the classes: Mon/Thu, 12-1pm at SR6 Mon/Thu, 2-3pm at SR6 Mon/Thu, 3-4pm at SR6 From what sources do we engender our individual and group identities, and to what extent do the arts stimulate this process? This course begins with an introduction to identity theory, and then explores identity issues such as male and female, self, national, racial, and social identities with an emphasis on their manifestations in various performance, visual, and literary art forms. Students will analyse and evaluation their own identities in relation to the course materials and the arts in their lives, requiring critical self-reflection and self-assessment. 3) *SSY2223 Western Music Within a Singaporean Context, 4 MCs (Dr Marc Rochester) Students can attend either lecture: Tue, 2-4pm, SR8 Fri, 2-4pm, SR8 Students to choose one tutorial from 5 sessions: Tue, 4-5pm, Wed, 2-3pm, 3-4pm, 4-5pm and Fri, 4-5pm at SR8 This module will look at the place of the Western Classical music tradition within the cultural life of Singapore. It will assess the impact of majority cultures (particularly from the Chinese, Malay and Indian communities) on the general reception of Western music, as well as on music written by Singapore-based composers. Students will be introduced to the principal figures in Singapore s musical development. The module will also chart the growth of music education in Singapore, both in the national schooling system as well as in private institutions and tertiary academies. A prior knowledge of music is helpful but not required.

4 Applied Modules 1) *MUA1192/MUA1193, Chamber Singers, 2 MCs (Mr Chong Wai Lun) Mon and Thu, pm, ER2 A wide variety of styles and genres are explored in a large vocal ensemble. 2) *MUA1166 Music and Computing, 2 MCs (A/P Peter Edwards) Mon, 2-4pm, SR3 The module introduces ways in which basic programming tools - iteration, randomization, conditions, amongst others - can be used to create music. It also includes an introduction to sample manipulation, sound synthesis tools, usage of common audio effects, and importation of MusicXML into music notation software. Students create two short compositions - an electronic collage composition and a scored composition created from algorithmically-generated components. 3) *MUA3224 Intermediate Keyboard Studies, 4 MCs (Dr Koo Siaw Sing) Wed, 1-3pm, SR2 This module presents the study of intermediate piano repertoire and application of harmony at the keyboard. Students learn various important keyboard skills and techniques that enhance their understanding of and experience in making music. Such skills include harmonization, transposition, figured bass, improvisation, piano techniques, score reading, musical interpretation, solo and ensemble playing. 4) *MUA3225 Early Advanced Keyboard Studies, 4 MCs (Dr Koo Siaw Sing) (only open to students who have passed MUA3224 Intermediate Keyboard Studies) Wed, 3-5pm, SR2 This module is a continuation of MUA 3224 Intermediate Keyboard Studies. It presents the study of early advanced piano repertoire and application of more advanced harmony at the keyboard. Students continue to develop various important keyboard skills and techniques that enhance their understanding of and experience in making music. Such skills include harmonization, transposition, figured bass, improvisation, piano techniques, score reading, musical interpretation, solo and ensemble playing. 5) *MUA3228 Analysis from a Keyboard Perspective, 4 MCs (Dr Khoo Hui Ling) Fri, 12-2pm, SR3 This elective offers an in-depth analysis of selected piano repertoire from various periods and styles. Students will study elements of music such as form, harmony and texture as part of a process of internalizing and interpreting works for the piano.

5 6) MUA3218 Introduction to Piano Technology, 4 MCs (Mr Eddie Low) This project-based module will teach the basic theory of piano acoustics, piano tuning and piano repair. 7) *MUA2201 Keyboard Literature, 4 MCs (Mr Frank Demeglio) Mon, 10-12noon, SR3 Keyboard Literature explores the great composers and their greatest works for keyboard instruments. The keyboard music that forms the core repertory of contemporary conservatory curriculums and concert programs will be the primary focus. The module slightly emphasizes music from the Baroque through Classical period, but works from all periods will be covered. Works for harpsichord, clavichord, organ and fortepiano will also be examined, and practical experience performing on period instruments (especially the harpsichord and fortepiano) will allow the students to experience the sound world of the composer. 8) *MUA3206 Jazz Study and Performance 2, 4 MCs (A/P Tony Makarome) (only open to students who have passed MUA3205 Jazz Study and Performance 1) Students can attend either session: Tue, 2-4pm, Recital Studio Thu, 2-4pm, Workshop This module focuses on the performance and study of more contemporary jazz approaches including modal interchange, scale derivations, pentatonic scales, additional forms and stylistic considerations pertaining to jazz music as practiced in the USA from the 1950s to the present day. There will be some exploration into latin-music influenced jazz as well as blues, rock, and funk music. Creative projects include leadsheet style compositions and arrangements of jazz standards or popular music. There will be a listening list of about 80 well-known jazz pieces. 9) MUA3132/MUA4232 Orchestral Excerpts for Strings, 2 MCs (A/P Zuo Jun, A/P Zhang Manchin, Mr Ng Pei-Sian, Mr Igor Yuzefovich) The modules focus on the development of orchestral performance skills for violin, viola and cello with emphasis on repertoire and preparation for auditions. 10) MUA2110/MUA3109/MUA4219 Chamber Ensemble Modules, 4 MCs Enrolled students would cover an additional entire work (from MUA2109) which is considered central to instrumental area (ie strings, wind, brass), at least some of which would be taken forward to public performance. Students would also be assessed on their active participation in the studio class which would cover a range of equivalently important works so as to provide an overview of the most significant works relevant to the genre (e.g. string quartet, wind quintet etc). Students would also be expected to participate in at least one public performance as well as in a final examination of sections of two of the prepared work. Additionally, students should offer reflections of process in their e-portfolio as well as posting a video of at least one movement. (Students to take note that chamber ensemble modules can only be counted as electives after the compulsory MC requirements have been met) 11) MUA2255/MUA2256/3255/3256 Applied Secondary Voice, 2 MCs Applied secondary lessons in Voice with Mr Daniel Fong.

6 Professional Integration Modules 1) MUA3260 Internship in Music Related Pathways, 4 MCs The internship module provides opportunity for hands-on learning in a professional context. Students will intern in a Singapore based music related company or agency. The knowledge and experiences gained will be documented in a final self reflective submission. 2) MUA3261 Career Development Group Project, 4 MCs The main focus of this module is the completion of a major project of community outreach. The project should in some way be connected to the student s future goals beyond graduation. The student(s) enrolled will develop the project and therefore will be unique by design. Students will identify a faculty mentor to guide them in the project production. 3) MUA3264 Career Development Independent Project, 4 MCs The main focus of this module is the completion of a major project of community outreach. The project should in some way be connected to the student s future goals beyond graduation. The student(s) enrolled will develop the project and therefore will be unique by design. Students will identify a faculty mentor to guide them in the project production. 4) MUA3221 Intensive Music Engagement Practicum, 2 MCs The main focus of this module is the completion of a major project of significant career impact. The project should be directly connected to the student s future goals beyond graduation. Projects are expected to involve internship, international competitions, festivals or other similarly significant events of high rigour and visibility. 5) MUA3214 Introduction to Pedagogy, 4 MCs (Dr Lee Pei Ming) This module introduces students to various approaches to teaching music to young children.it focuses on promoting creativity and developing the skills needed to be successful in teaching elementary students. Students will observe classroom music teaching and community musicmaking in action as well as attending some instrumental lessons.to make learning music more enjoyable for young children, each student would develop interesting concepts and games which will be presented to their peers. 6) MUA3216 Performance and Communication, 4 MCs (A/P Ty Constante/Mr Loh Jun Hong) Mon, 10-12noon, Workshop This is a third and fourth year elective module for all YSTCM students. This module seeks to develop the students technical and artistic capacity for performance and communication in a variety of formal and non-formal contexts. The students will engage in performances in a community setting, ranging from a local Singaporean one to a larger one that includes the South East Asian region 7) MUT3224 Teaching Music Online, 2 MCs (Mr Gabriel Lee) Mon, 4-6pm, SR3

7 Students will learn the current methods and pedagogical approaches to teaching music over the Internet. Students will practise and apply their knowledge by teaching music students around the world in a variety of settings. 8) MUA2210 Rhythmical Devices 2, 2 MCs (A/P Tony Makarome) Mon, 3-4pm, SR4 The continuing practical study of rhythmic subdivisions and groupings covered in MUA 2205 (Rhythmical Devices in Performances). These concepts are the foundation for a thorough understanding of how rhythm works in composed music, improvised music and interactive musical performance. The devices learned include a system of rhythmic counting based on South Indian Konnakkol and its applications. 9) MUA1157 Solfege 1, 2 MCs (A/P Tony Makarome) Mon, 4-5pm, SR4 This module presents the practical study of solfege as taught in many conservatories around the world. The class will be exposed to many sight-reading opportunities from single line melodies to orchestral scores. The texts used are George Dandelot s Manuel Practique, Dannhauser s sightsinging books and Pasquale Bona s Rhythmical Articulation. Students will be learning Fixed Do solfege as the main subject but the Moveable Do system will also be covered but to a lesser extent. Four of the seven clefs used in music reading and transposition will also be covered. These are the Treble, Bass, Alto and Tenor clefs. 10) *MUA3219/MUA3220 World Music Ensemble, 2 MCs (A/P Ty Constante) Mon, 2-4pm, Workshop This term the World Music Ensemble course will focus on the music of the Shona people from Zimbabwe, Africa. Students will learn to play the mbira zdavadzimu, a unique and ancient traditional African instrument. Students will be expected to participate in public performances of pieces from the traditional repertoire as well as being given assigned reading and listening assignments.

8 Language Modules 1) MUL1106 Italian for Singers 2 4MCs, (only open to students who have passed MUL1105 Italian for Singers 1) Tue and Fri, pm, SR1 This module serves as the second semester of Italian language studies for Voice Majors in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Basic grammar, morphology, syntax and conversation will be emphasised. 2) MUL1108 French for Singers 2, 4MCs (only open to students who have passed MUL1107 French for Singers 1) Tue and Fri, pm, SR7 This module will serve as the second semester of French language studies for Voice Majors in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Basic grammar, morphology, syntax and conversation with emphasis on situations which a musician in France will encounter will be emphasized. 3) MUL1110 German for Singers 2, 4MCs (only open to students who have passed MUL1109 German for Singers 1) Tue and Fri, pm, SR4 This module will serve as the second semester of German language studies for Voice Majors in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. Basic grammar, morphology, syntax and conversation with emphasis on situations which a musician in Germany will encounter will be emphasized.
