2 Schedule 5 min: Introduction 30 min: Breakdown of basic steps 40 min: Masterclass 5 min: Break 45 min: Choreography breakdown (Total: 2 hours) Session Objective Understand the different genres used within Broadway and Musical Theatre performances. Introduce Broadway into your Zumba Fitness classes by following the formula. History & Background Musical Theater is a genre of theater or live stage productions that presents its story through an interwoven combination of words, songs, and movement. Its distinguishing characteristic is the equal importance it places on the three arts of acting, singing and dancing to relay the emotional content of its story to the audience. Musical presentations have been entertaining audiences in other parts of the world for centuries but the birth of the modern Musical really began in the 19th century with the musicals of Gilbert and Sullivan in Britain and, in the 20th century in North America with George M. Cohen. These led to the groundbreaking production of the musical Showboat in the late 1920 s written by Kern and Hammerstein. The Musical quickly became part of the North American culture and has gained popularity over the last 90 years. Golden Age of Broadway Most publications writing about the musical state that the pinnacle of Broadway s success is generally believed to be from the 1940 s to the 1960 s, called the Golden Age of Broadway. Some of the most classic, well-known musicals come from this era and are known by North Americans whether they are musical lovers or not! Who doesn t know the Sound of Music? Or Oklahoma!? Some of the other famous musicals from that time period are: Guys and Dolls, On the Town, Anything Goes, Kiss Me Kate, and West Side Story. The dance styles in the era varied from tap, jazz, to ballet sequences to Jerome Robbins athletically-based choreographed step. In the late period of the Golden Age, there was beginning to emerge, a new, very unique style by a Broadway dancer turned choreographer.bob Fosse. 2

4 Mega Musicals/Modern Musicals In the 1990 s, the Mega musical or Pop-Opera became the norm. The story was told primarily through music and dance and usually had a big event happen for example, the dropping chandelier in Phantom of the Opera, the helicopter in Miss Saigon and the rotating stage in Les Miserables. A very famous British composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber was responsible for composing many of the well-known mega musicals. Phantom of the Opera, and Evita to name two. Les Miserables was one of the longest-running Megamusicals on Broadway! In the 2000 s, we see the Modern Musical. Rent, In the Heights, Thoroughly Modern Millie are examples of the trend of the Modern Musical to deal with today s societal issues and to reflect back to the audience, the idiosynchrosies of our current cultural climate. Working with a lower budget and keeping in mind the easily-distracted audience of the digital age, the Modern Musicals are often set on stages with minimal set distractions, and move at a fast pace.
