2 QUALIFICATION PROFILE FOR THE MASTER PROGRAMME PIANO General information In today s professional environment, which sets enormously high standards and demands maximum flexibility in equal measure, the main focus of the Master Programme Piano is to convey the musical interpretive skills and technical abilities that are needed for a successful musical career. In this curriculum, outstanding artists, most of whom are themselves actively involved in international concert life, pass on the musical values of the Viennese style of music-making, thereby incorporating all the major musical traditions and schools. ENTRANCE EXAM The admission examination serves to demonstrate a candidate s artistic aptitude for the piano, as well as to ascertain their previous instrumental and musical knowledge and skills relating to the piano. In the admission examination, the Examination Committee assesses a candidate s technical skills, musical talent and capacity for expression and creative arrangement, based on which a career as a professional concert pianist can be realistically expected. Permission to the master programme Piano is the completion of a professionally qualifying bachelor programme for Piano or an equivalent study 1 at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution and the successful completion of the entrance examination for the master programme Piano ahead. The entrance exam subdivides into following parts: Recital of several pieces with various styles on the piano: The examination consists of 2 rounds; all pieces have to be played by heart. 1 st round: One virtuoso etude and one piece chosen by the candidate 2 nd round: a) One piece from the Viennese classic (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert) b) One prelude and fugue from Bach c) One romantic piece (incl. Rachmaninov, Skrjabin to Op. 52, Szymanowksi to Op. 21) d) one piece from impressionism to the modern age In the first and second round the pieces must be different. Interview with the examination board. This concerted interview will concern of specific themes, about the motivation entering this career and to individual targets 1 Equivalent programmes are f.ex. BA Piano; BA Piano-Vocal Accompaniment; BA Music Education Voice and Instrument (Piano) 2
3 PROOF OF PROFICIENCY IN GERMAN Candidates, whose first language is not German must provide evidence of proficiency in German in conjunction with the entrance examination, as far as this is necessary for the successful progress of their studies. This evidence should preferably take the form of a school-leaving certificate based on classes taught in German. Should the candidate be unable to provide evidence of proficiency in German, the Rector s office must require them to take and pass a supplementary examination in German at Level B1 2, before admission to their second semester. Following certificates are accepted: B1-Certificate from an ÖSD examination centre ( ÖSD Zertifikat B1 (ZB1) ; or a Goethe Institute examination centre ( Goethe-Zertifikat B1 ; TEACHERS OF THE MAIN ARTISTIC SUBJECT (alphabetical order) ARNOLD Stefan Mag. HINTERHUBER Christopher HUGHES Martin JIRACEK VON ARNIM Jan VLADAR Stefan ZILBERSTEIN Lilija 2 Candidates need not take the supplementary examination if they present evidence of having passed an examination at the stipulated level at an international examination centre for the German language (e.g. Goethe Institute, ÖSD). Information on precisely what certificates candidates must submit for this purpose can be found in the relevant guideline on evidence of adequate proficiency in German at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, issued by the Rector s office. This examination is designed for students who have not had the opportunity to sit for the German proficiency certificate. It should be noted that a level equivalent to B1 will be required. The test does not form part of the entrance examination, and attendance is not compulsory. 3
