2 GRADING Performances are required and contribute to the grade. Performance absence will be excused only in cases of family emergency or urgent unforeseen events. This does not include conflicts due to personal scheduling negligence (after-school employment, babysitting, family vacations, transportation, etc.). It is the position of the music staff that performances take precedence over extra-curricular activities. Stated very simply, school comes first. When conflicts arise between music events and other ROHS events, the teachers, staff, and coaches involved will work to resolve the issue. Grading for Band (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble) 50% Daily Approach to Rehearsal (Promptness, Preparation, Participation, Attitude) 10% School Concert Attendance 10% Post-Concert SHLF (Written review of school performances) 10% Core Knowledge & Skills Advancement CSKA (One Level per Semester) 10% Community Performance Attendance (One approved performance a Semester) 10% Other Written Assignments / Special Projects METHOD BOOKS Students will work out of the following method books. These will be used in class on a regular basis. In most cases the books will be provided at school. It s recommended students purchase their own book for home practice. Students will not be permitted to take books from the class set home. Concert Band Standard of Excellence Book III (Green) Concert Orchestra Essential Techniques 2000 Book III (Green) Symphony Band Essential Techniques (Black)

3 Symphony Orchestra Advanced Techniques (Essential Elements Series) Wind Ensemble Foundations for Superior Performance (Blue) Students will be expected to acquire these books by the end of the first week of school. (All are available at McCourt s Music in Berkley.) UNIFORMS Our Music Department standard is as follows: Royal Oak High School Performing Ensembles always perform in uniform. Boys Boys will be issued a Tuxedo Jacket and Slacks for performance. They are responsible for its care and dry-cleaning throughout the year. Boys are responsible for providing the following items to complete their performance attire: Girls White Tuxedo Shirt with Wing Tip Collar, Black Bow Tie, and Cummerbund (Available at the K&G Menswear in Royal Oak, or many other men s stores.) Black Dress Shoes (Marching Band Uniform Shoe is acceptable. Absolutely no athletic or casual shoes) Black Dress Socks (Crew length. No ankle socks!) Girls are responsible for the purchase of their Formal Dress worn in performance. (Other non-uniform black dresses may not be worn.) Girls complete their performance attire with: Black Dress Shoes (Moderate to low heels that provide for safe walking) Nylons are optional, but if worn must be flesh tone. AUXILIARY ENSEMBLE UNIFORMS Performance attire for Auxiliary Ensembles (Jazz Band, Fiddle Ensemble, etc.) may be different than standard formal attire. Any uniform variations will be mutually decided upon among the members of each auxiliary group.

4 DROP BOX Both the Band & Orchestra rehearsal rooms have a locked Drop Box for the purpose of turning in payments, permission slips, and other important documents. These boxes are always used rather than turning items in to your director. Any time money is turned in, it MUST be in a sealed envelope, clearly labeled with the student s name and what the money is for. Unlabeled cash placed into the box will be considered a donation, and will be deposited into the B&O Boosters General Fund. ROYAL OAK BAND & ORCHESTRA BOOSTERS Cindy Murphy President ( cindymurphy@wowway.com ) Our music program is fortunate to be supported by our Booster Organization. Without that support, many of the things we do would be impossible. All parents of Band & Orchestra students are welcome and encouraged to participate. The primary functions of the group include: providing financial support through fundraising activities for the entire program, allowing for the purchase of instruments, equipment, music, support staff, etc. supporting students in their musical endeavors providing volunteer service at concerts and events when needed managing uniforms and equipment maintenance contributing to the overall sense of community, building solid relationships among all Band & Orchestra students, their parents, and the Royal Oak Community marketing our music program to the Royal Oak Community and beyond The first General Meeting this year is Tuesday / September 13 th / 7:00p.m. / ROHS Band Room Check out the Boosters' website at for updated information, forms, calendars, volunteer opportunities, etc."
