A Note from the Beaver Lake Middle School Choir Director, Tina Worthington The Beaver Lake Middle School (BLMS) Choir is a combined choir of 7th and 8th grade girls and 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys. The Beaver Lake Middle School Choir has already performed a Fall Concert this school year and will also be performing at Seattle Center s Winterfest before the end of the holiday season. In addition, the BLMS choirs will perform at several concerts and assemblies throughout the remainder of the school year including Leavenworth Maifest and Disneyland. This is the first time that the choir has performed with the Sammamish Symphony and we are super excited to be part of this special holiday event. We will do our best to share our gift of music as we do when we sing for our audiences throughout the year! 5

The weeks surrounding the winter solstice are significant in nearly all cultures. In America, the holidays mean many things to many people and not necessarily a single thing for each. For the religious, the holidays are firmly rooted in the spiritual celebrations of Christmas and Chanukah. For some, the coming New Year brings hope for better lives and a better world. For others, the longheld traditions, most originating in Europe and refurbished in this hemisphere, hold the most appeal and power to stir memories. And to most, the season means shopping and giftgiving. In all of these activities, music occupies a unique and universal role. Carmen Dragon (arranger) O Tannenbaum As the long-time music director of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, Carmen Dragon ( ) usually pulled out all the stops in his orchestral arrangements. His overthe-top setting of O Tannenbaum boasts everything from Hollywood fanfares to romantic strings. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the 19th century. O Tannenbaum, with lyrics by Ernst Anschütz, written in 1824, and a melody based on a 16th-century Silesian German folk song, became associated Program Notes with the Christmas tree by the early 20th century and sung as a Christmas carol. In the process, the original lyrics, which referred to the fir s evergreen qualities as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness, were mildly altered to refer to the Christmas tree s decorative qualities, with treu (true, faithful) changed to grün (green). The song is known in English as O Christmas Tree. Dan Goeller (arranger) He Is Born / Away in a Manger As a holiday Pops arranger, Dan Goeller applies his forte for integrating traditional tunes into different classical music styles. Besides his many stylistically diverse arrangements, compositions, and orchestrations, Goeller has also worked on numerous recordings and several tours with artists including Amy Grant, CeCe Williams, and Nickel Creek. In 2005, he started Dan Goeller Music Publishing as a means of offering new and innovative choral and instrumental music. He Is Born with Away in a Manger is an arrangement reminiscent of Rimsky-Korsakov s Capriccio Espagnol, placing the gentle, rocking motion of Away in a Manger in the middle, bracketed by the festive atmosphere Lessons - Supplies - Rentals plateaumusic of He Is Born at the beginning and ending. Il est né, le divin Enfant (English: He is born, the divine Child ) is a traditional French Christmas carol. The French text of the carol was published in 1874 or 1875 in a collection of ancient carols. Away in a Manger was first published in 1885 in Philadelphia and has become widely known throughout the English-speaking world. Goeller uses the British traditional tune, rather than the American, called Cradle Song and composed by William Kirkpatrick in In Britain, Away in the Manager is tied for second among the most popular carols. Bruce Broughton Overture to Miracle on 34th Street One of the most versatile composers working today, Bruce Broughton writes in every medium, from theatrical releases and TV feature films to the concert stage and computer games. He has received a record ten Emmy awards for his TV scores. His major film scores include Silverado (which brought him an Oscar nomination), Young Sherlock Holmes (whose soundtrack album earned a Grammy nomination), Glory & Honor, and Honey, I Blew Up the Kid. His score for Heart of Darkness was the first or Klahanie Dr SE Issaquah, WA Lessons for all instruments and voice $30 each In-home lessons available for slightly more Open 7 days a week Klahanie Dr SE Issaquah, WA

chestral score composed for a video game. As a conductor, his credits include Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue for Fantasia Broughton s Overture to Miracle on 34th Street was composed for the 1994 remake of the 1947 classic Christmas movie. In both movies, the story takes place in New York City following Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade, in which the successful defense of a department store Santa for insanity leaves the characters wondering if he might be the real thing. The 1994 version starts Richard Attenborough, Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott, and then seven year old Mara Wilson. This version had a more serious tone than the original and a large portion was rewritten, although the majority of the plot and characters remained intact. With a main theme reminiscent of Joy to the World, Broughton s overture captures the warmth and Christmas spirit of the enduring story. Leroy Anderson Sleigh Ride Leroy Anderson ( ) was an American composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. John Williams described him as one of the great American masters of light orchestral music. Anderson would occasionally appear on the Boston Pops regular concerts on PBS to conduct his own music while Fiedler would sit on the sidelines. Anderson s popular Sleigh Ride was not written as a Christmas piece, but as a work that describes a winter event. Anderson started the work during a heat wave in August The Boston Pops recording of it was the first pure orchestral piece to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Music chart. Scott Selfon (arranger) Chanukah Lights Scott Selfon is a senior development lead in Microsoft s Advanced Technology Group. Among his responsibilities, he is the Group s senior audio specialist, assisting composers, sound designers, audio programmers, and game designers with technical and creative challenges in developing sound for games. A frequent speaker at video game developer conferences, Selfon is on the faculty of the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program and an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, where he developed and taught a senior-level undergraduate course curriculum on game audio. Selfon was also the principal violist of the Sammamish Symphony from 1998 to 2007, and currently plays with the Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra in Seattle. Selfon is an alumnus of the University of Southern California, where he obtained dual degrees in music composition and computer engineering/ computer science. As Chanukah Lights illustrates, a large number of Chanukah songs have been written, perhaps more so than for any other Jewish holiday. Chanukah marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by the forces of the Seleucid Empire and commemorates the miracle of the container of oil in which a single-day s supply of consecrated oil fueled the eternal flame in the Temple for eight days, the length of time it took to prepare and consecrate fresh oil. In North America especially, Chanukah has gained increased importance with many Jewish families, who wanted a Jewish alternative to the Christmas celebrations that often overlap with Chanukah. In Israel, Chanukah has also become something of a national holiday. Dan Goeller (arranger) A Christmas Festival of Carols Another characteristic Dan Goeller arrangement, A Christmas Festival of Carols features a medley of familiar carols presented in a variety of classical styles. The featured songs are Hark the Herald Angels Sing, How Great Our Joy, I Saw Three Ships, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, O Come, Little Children, and Angels We Have Heard on High. Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky Final Scene from Swan Lake Although it does not maintain the holiday popularity of The Nutcracker ballet, Swan Lake by Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky ( ) is considered by many to be the greatest classical ballet of all time. The image of a swan has come to represent the lyrical image of a dancer, Tchaikovsky composed his score for Moscow s Bolshoi Ballet in 1877, but it was not until Marius Petipa and Lev 7

Ivanov s St. Petersburg production of 1895 that Swan Lake took the form we know today. The ballet has since inspired countless choreographers in their own productions. The Pacific Northwest Ballet will perform Swan Lake with choreography by Kent Stowell this coming April David Clydesdale Let s Have a Christmas Celebration Mykola Leontovych/ Randy Vader Carol of the Kings Alfred Burt/Wihla Hutson The Many Joys of Christmas The Sammamish Symphony is honored and delighted to present the students of the Beaver Lake Middle School Choir and the musical director Tina Worthington in three holiday-spirited numbers. Let s Have a Christmas Celebration is an original medley by Grammy Award and Dove Award-winning composer, arranger, and orchestrator David Clydesdale, filled with the hustle and bustle of the season, including a few short quotes of recognized carols. In Carol of the Kings, Randy Vader develops a new conception and lyric for the familiar Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych ( ), Ukrainian nationalist composer, choral conductor, priest, and teacher of international renown. The Many Joys of Christmas celebrates the artistic partnership of composer Alfred Burt ( ) and lyricist Wihla Hutson ( ). Burt, the son of an Episcopal minister, was a young jazz musician who composed fifteen now famous Christmas carols between 1942 and his early death in 1954 at the age of 33. Only one of the carols was performed in public outside his immediate family circle during his lifetime. Hutson, the organist for the elder Burt s church, wrote the lyrics for Burt s songs from 1949 onwards. Bill Holcombe Twas the Night Before Christmas A renaissance musician instrumentalist (clarinet and saxophone), arranger, composer, conductor, and music publisher Wilford Bill Holcombe ( ) studied composition, musicology, and flute performance at the University of Pennsylvania and Julliard. By the 1970 s, Holcombe had become one of America s most published arrangers for concert band and orchestra. In addition to owning and operating his own publishing company, Musicians Publications, he accepted commissions to arrange for over 100 symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada. Twas the Night Before Christmas is a setting for narrator and orchestra of the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore. Entitled A Visit from St. Nicholas, the poem, which has been called arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American, is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today. Holcombe s setting weaves in traditional Christmas favorites: Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, and others. Malcolm Arnold The Holly and the Ivy Concert Suite Sir Malcolm Arnold CBE ( ) was one of the towering musical figures of the 20th century, with a remarkable catalogue of major concert works to his credit, including nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, one musical, over twenty concertos, two string quartets, and music for brass-band and wind-band. He also wrote 132 film scores, including Bridge on the River Kwai, which won him an Oscar in The 1952 British movie, The Holly and the Ivy, is a nostalgic Yuletide drama, based on a British play by Wynyard Browne and adapted for the screen by Anatole de Grunwald, who also produced the film. With a cast full of esteemed British actors, the story involves an extended family reuniting for Christmas at the home of a country vicar (Ralph Richardson). Among the relatives are two comic aunts (Margaret Halstan and Maureen Delaney), a cynical son on leave from the army (Denholm Elliott), an anguished daughter from London (Margaret Leighton), and a generous daughter (Celia Johnson) who has remained home to care for her widowed father, but really wants to get married. Everyone is emotionally troubled in some way, and the vicar, caring as he is toward his parishioners, seems blind to his own family members turmoil, until, of course, every- 8

one s personal problems begin to emerge in a poignant scenario. Dan Goeller (arranger) The Wexford Carol The Wexford Carol is a traditional religious Irish Christmas carol originating from County Wexford, and specifically, Enniscorthy. Dating to the 12th century, it is one of the oldest extant Christmas carols in the European tradition. The subject of the song is that of the Nativity. As orchestrated by Dan Goeller, the carol s style is reminiscent of Ravel s Bolero, with an ostinato accompaniment pattern and exotic colors. Carmen Dragon (arranger) Joy to the World Another Carmen Dragon fanfare-like arrangement, the words of the popular Christmas carol Joy to the World are by English hymn writer, Isaac Watts ( ), comprising a paraphrase of the second part of Psalm 98 and first published in Over a century later, in 1838, it was printed with a splendid, dynamic tune. The sole indication of authorship for the melody was the cryptic notation from Handel. Because of this strange wording and some similarities between parts of the tune and parts of the Messiah, the melody has often been attributed to the masterful George Frideric Handel ( ). Yet the links to Handel are tenuous and scholars have basically refuted the hypothesis. Rather, the probable composer of the tune was Lowell Mason ( ) a prominent American music educator, music editor, and hymn writer. The Sammamish Symphony would like to thank Gordon Brown and the Gordon Brown Foundation for the generous contribution for music to build the Symphony s library. Gordon has been an active member and contra-bassoon player with the symphony for many years. ADD A TOUCH OF CLASS TO YOUR PARTY OR EVENT.
