2 ASQ International Music Academy Join fellow musicians from around New Zealand and overseas for six days of stimulating and enjoyable music-making in Wellington, New Zealand s cultural capital. The 2018 ASQ International Music Academy will take place at St Andrew s on the Terrace in Wellington and will begin on Monday 23 July at 9:30am. Each day, participants will be busy with chamber music coaching and rehearsals taken by members of the Aroha String Quartet. Guest tutors will direct ensembles and masterclasses. The ASQ International Music Academy will culminate in a participants concert in the wonderful acoustic of St Andrew s on The Terrace on the evening of Saturday 28 July. There will be two public lunchtime concerts: a participants concert on Wednesday 25 July and a tutors concert on Thursday 26 July. The timetable includes time to practise, to relax and socialise with other participants and to enjoy the scenic and cultural attractions of Wellington. In the evenings, there will be time for informal concerts and workshops as well as other social events. The ASQ International Music Academy is ideally suited to student and non-professional musicians with a minimum standard of Grade VI. In 2018, the focus of the Academy is again on strings and piano. Pre-formed chamber ensembles are welcome to apply. Participants not in an existing group will be organised into ensembles for coaching. Music will be sent out in advance. Applicants who are unable to attend the whole course from July may apply for the short course from July, beginning at 9:30am on Thursday 26 July. A maximum of three pianists will be accepted, for the full course only. 3 The Tutors Aroha String Quartet Haihong Liu & Ursula Evans violins Zhongxian Jin viola & violin Robert Ibell cello/double Bass Acclaimed as demonstrating accomplished brilliance, soulfulness and sublime intensity in perfect balance and tonal unity (The Dominion Post), the Aroha String Quartet is firmly established as one of New Zealand s finest chamber music ensembles. Founded in 2004, this versatile Wellington-based quartet is known for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovation. Haihong Liu and Zhongxian Jin are founder members of the Quartet. Robert Ibell joined the group in 2009 and Ursula Evans in The Aroha Quartet is committed to presenting string quartet works from western classical and avant-garde repertoire to traditional Chinese folk music, as well as works for larger forces through collaborations with numerous high-profile musicians. The Aroha Quartet performs regularly around NZ in centres from the Deep South to the Far North. In 2014 they performed five concerts as part of Chamber Music New Zealand s Kaleidoscope series. Overseas trips have seen them participate in the prestigious International Summer Academy in Austria in 2010, give concerts and masterclasses in China in 2010 and 2013, and perform at the Huntington Music Festival in Australia in The Aroha Quartet s first ASQ International Academy in Asia took place in Zhongshan, China, in late January 2018.

4 Guest Tutors Donald Armstrong violin Ken Ichinose cello Donald Armstrong is Associate Concertmaster of the NZSO. He was formerly Music Director of the NZ Chamber Orchestra, Principal Second Violin of the Tivoli Sinfoniorkester in Denmark and Co-Concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in France. He studied in New York and Boston with teachers including Josef Gingold and Masuko Ushioda, and chamber music with Louis Krasner, Eugene Lehner and Laurence Lesser. He performs regularly in New Zealand with his own chamber group, the Amici Ensemble. Donald is interested in preserving and advancing New Zealand s musical heritage. He has taught as an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music and he teaches, coaches and encourages young instrumentalists. He plays a violin by Nicolo Gagliano of British cellist, Ken Ichinose, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London having studied with Paul Watkins. During this time Ken co-founded the Galitzin String Quartet with whom he performed for ten years completing major tours in the UK, Germany, Holland, Portugal and France. The Quartet were first prize winners of the 2007 Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition. Ken is also co-founder of an annual chamber music festival in Brignac near Montpellier, France. Before joining the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal in 2014, Ken enjoyed 10 years freelancing with London orchestras including the Philharmonia, Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Ken plays on a Lorenzo Carcassi cello made in Florence in 1747.

5 Joan Perarnau Garriga double bass Emma Sayers piano After finishing his initial studies in Spain, Joan Perarnau Garriga moved to the UK, where he graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in He then moved to Japan as a founding member of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra where he was principal double bass until In 2008 and 2009 he was a member of the Lucerne Festival Academy and since 2009 he has been a member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland. In 2010 Joan won a Co-principal position in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Spain, a position he held until he was appointed Associate Principal Double Bass with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in April 2013, becoming Section Principal in April He is an Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music. Emma Sayers studied piano for many years with noted Wellington teacher Judith Clark, with whom she completed her undergraduate degree at Victoria University in Wellington. From she attended the Ferenc Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, studying with renowned Hungarian musicians Rita Wagner, Ferenc Rados, Péter Solymos, János Devish (Kodály Quartet) and Hargitai Géza (Bartók Quartet). Emma is also an enthusiastic teacher. As a lecturer at the Massey Conservatorium of Music & NZ School of Music from she coached and accompanied students of all instruments and vocal types, as well as teaching chamber music and solo piano. These days she runs a busy private teaching studio, and is an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music.

6 Brian Shillito chamber music Thank you all it was great. I enjoyed it all much more than I expected. Great tutors, great atmosphere, and music very well chosen Participant Christchurch-born Brian Shillito took degrees in English Literature and Viola Performance from the University of Canterbury before joining the NZSO in After 2 years he left to pursue post-graduate studies in the US, followed by several years working in Canada and the UK, where he freelanced with major orchestras such as the Philharmonia, the RPO and the London Mozart Players. In 1981 he returned to the NZSO as Sub-Principal Viola where he served 35 years until his recent retirement. During that time he was also a foundation member of the NZ Chamber Orchestra and an active chamber musician, being a member of the Pleyel Piano Quartet, the Gezentsvey Quartet, and the Linden Ensemble. He is now enjoying more time for the garden, for reading, and for trips into the New Zealand bush.

7 Cathie McCallum Administrator ASQ IMA 2018 Cathie McCallum s background is in project administration and management. She was born and worked in Wellington before travelling to the UK as an I.T. Consultant in the mid 1980 s. After London she worked for 6 years in Hong Kong for multi-national companies such as Moët & Chandon and United Distillers in I.T. Consultancy. This was followed by a move to Barcelona, Spain with her family for a further 3 years. In late 1998 they returned to Wellington where she has undertaken several admin roles. She has more recently assisted with the Trinity Music exams.
