1 Season Concert Finale May 1, 2015 featuring guest pianist HanQing Zhou The Clear Lake Symphony, with Music Director, Dr. Charles Johnson, started its 39 th season in the Fall of The Symphony, recognized as a premiere community orchestra, is a member of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, ASCAP and BMI. Its goals are to present classical music for the residents of the Bay Area and to provide opportunities for the Bay Area musicians to create a variety of musical experiences for the enjoyment of the community. Six regular season performances including the Christmas Pops will be held featuring various classical selections and guest soloists. All concerts will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Auditorium, Upper Bay Road in Nassau Bay across from NASA Johnson Space Center at 7:30 PM (see concert dates). The Clear Lake Symphony will be performing the sixth and last concert of the season on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Auditorium located at Upper Bay Road across from NASA Johnson Space Center. Celebrating their 39th season, the Orchestra will perform an evening of beautiful music featuring the winners of the annual Youth Concerto Competition. The Orchestra will be led by Dr. Charles Johnson, in his 34th year as Conductor and Musical Director of the Clear Lake Symphony. 2 HanQing Zhou Guest Artist May 1, 2015 Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No.5 HanQing Zhou is a rising i figure of the 80 s generation pianist i who is committed to connect to today's audiences by offering strong interpretations of the historical and contemporary repertoire. As a soloist he has performed in orchestral and recital settings. HanQing debut was with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, performing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3 under James Feddeck. Born in Chengdu, a southern city of China, HanQing attended the precollege program of Sichuan Conservatory of Music where he studied with Professor Huang Jing and Zheng DaXin. He came to the United States for his Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance at Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Professor Peter Takacs. Mr. Zhou completed his Master's Degree at Rice University, Shepherd School of Music with Dr. Robert Roux. Now he is pursuing his Doctoral Degree at University of Houston under the guidance of Nancy Weems. He has also participated in many music festivals and master classes. HanQing received the International Award and Dean's Scholarship from Oberlin Conservatory and is a recipient of the Dr. Margaret Ann Goldstein Prize from Rice University and C. W. Fellowship from University of Houston. HanQing is also a prize winner of the DCS International Piano Competition, Ruth Burr Piano Competition, Firelands Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Hong Kong Mozart Piano Competition, and the Gu Lang Yu National Competition. 3 May 1, 2015 Program Notes Ferruccio Busoni ( ). Busoni tossed off Lustspiel Overture (Comedy Overture) in one night in 1897 and revised it in He had no particular comedy in mind, but wanted to write an overture in the Mozart tradition. The result is a delightful, effervescent romp which has become one of Busoni's best loved works. Despite the "classical" air, the overture's wide range of tonal modulation into remote keys is entirely modern. excerpts from "American Record Guide" and "The Classical Shop Charles Camille Saint-Saens ( ). The Piano Concerto No. 5, popularly known as "The Egyptian", was Saint-Saens's last piano concerto. He wrote it in 1896, twenty years after his fourth piano concerto, to play himself at his own Jubilee Concert on May 6 of that year. This concert celebrated the Fiftieth Anniversary of his debut at the Salle Pleyel in The premiere proved to be a popular and critical success. The concerto is nicknamed "The Egyptian" for two reasons. Firstly, Saint-Saens composed it in the temple town of Luxor while on one of his frequent winter vacations in Egypt, and secondly, the music is among his most exotic, displaying influences from Javanese and Spanish as well as Middle-eastern music. excerpts from Wikipedia Peter Ityich Tschaikowsky k ( ). The Symphony No.6 is Tschaikowsky's k final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August The composer led the first performance in Saint Petersburg in October of that year, nine days before his death. The second performance, conducted by Eduard Napravnik, took place 2l days later, at a memorial concert in November. It included some minor corrections that Tschaikowsky had made after the premiere, and was thus the first performance of the work in the exact form in which it is known today. excerpts from Wikipedia Special Features In-School Performances The Symphony is dedicated to the musical education of our children and brings classical music to the public schools, at no cost to the students or taxpayers, through classroom demonstrations and discussions. Season tickets will also be available at the May 1, 2015 concert and the opening Fall Pops concert on September 18, 2015 at the ticket box office. After September 18 th, only individual tickets for the remaining season concert may be purchased.
