Outcomes What the students will learn--the skill, knowledge and affective goals. Analysis Learn as much as possible about the music through detailed score study and background research. Strategies How the students learn--all the activities, questions and tools involved in teaching the outcomes. Assessment The process of gathering information about what students know and can do, evaluating the data and then determining future actions. One paradox of master teaching is that it comes across as organic and easy, even though it is thoughtfully and carefully crafted. Similarly, this model for planning instruction seems quite simple and intuitive, but contains the possibility for infinitely complex and rich thinking.

2 What is CMP? The Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Project was initiated in Wisconsin in 1977 as a means of assisting teachers with the development of performance with understanding in school music programs. The project began with a group of respected music teachers from diverse school districts and a project steering committee which facilitated development. The teachers and steering committee developed and field tested a process for planning and carrying out instruction in performing groups. In the CMP process, the rehearsal is seen as a laboratory where students can develop an understanding of musical concepts such as expression, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre and form by being involved in a variety of roles including performing, improvising, arranging, composing, conducting, and analyzing music. The original need for the project was articulated by many educators, including Charles Benner, who concluded in 1972 that in order to have an impact on musical behavior, there must be a planned effort by the teacher to enrich the performing experience with additional kinds of musical understanding. (Benner, 1972) The CMP Model was developed through a careful examination of the teaching/learning process in music performing groups. The learner and the music are central to the CMP planning process. Though the five components of the model are equally important, planning instruction can begin at any of the points. For instance, the selection of music is often a starting point for planning but the decision about what music to use may be based on assessment of student needs or previous learning. Assessment is appropriate before, during, or after the process of study. A desired outcome may be identified through the assessment process or outcomes may be stated in a local curriculum guide. It then becomes the task of the teacher to select music which is appropriate for working toward that outcome. Analysis leads to recognition of those music elements that need to be learned to develop Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (or understanding through performance). Strategies are the ways in which the teacher attempts to bring the music and the performer together to that quality performance and meaningful learning can take place simultaneously.

Chris Gleason earned his BME at UW-Eau Claire in 1997 and his Masters Degree from UW-LaCrosse in 2002. He has taught band in the East Troy School District and the LaCrosse School District.

Gleason's bands have performed at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda, the "New Wisconsin Promise Conference", and the 2006 and 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conferences.

He currently teaches band at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Mr. Gleason's bands have performed at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda, the "New Wisconsin Promise Conference", and the 2006 and 2009 Wisconsin State Music Conferences. The Patrick Marsh Middle School Band has commissioned composers such as Samuel R. Hazo ( Blue and Green Music -2009), Brian Balmages ( Sun Cycles 2012), Michael Sweeney ( Particles ), Erik Morales ( One Giant Leap ), John Mackey ( Lightning Field 2015), Alex Shapiro ( Rock Music ), Brian Balmages (TBA 2017), Andrew Boysen Jr (TBA 2018). In 1992 Mr. Gleason was selected as the Wisconsin Governor s Scholar to Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Mr. Gleason has performed professionally at Disneyland, Valleyfair, and the Mall of America. He has been guest conductor of numerous camps and festivals including the National Band Association Wisconsin Chapter Junior High All-State Band, Tri-State Honors Band, UW-Milwaukee Honors Band, UW-Whitewater Band Camp and numerous regional honor bands across Wisconsin and Illinois. He is the past-chair of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Committee and the Wisconsin State Middle Level Honors Band. Currently, he is chair of the Wisconsin State Middle Level Honors Project. He has taught CMP Workshops at VanderCook College of Music, the Los Angeles Unified School District in California, The NAfME National In-Service Conference, numerous school districts in the Midwest, and recently in Hong Kong. He has presented clinics at the Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin State Music Conventions. Mr. Gleason was a quarter-finalist for the 2016 Grammy Music Education Award, the recent recipient of the Melvin F. Pontious Sparks in Music Education Award, and the Vi Miller Award for Excellence by Dane Arts and had a feature interview in the March 2015 Instrumentalist Magazine. Mr. Gleason is the founder and organizer of the Band Festival at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. Mr. Gleason is a member of NBA, WMEA, and NAfME. Miriam Altman knew from the beginning of her career that her passion lay in working with young adolescents. She teaches middle school students and serves as Co-Chair of the Arts Department at University School of Milwaukee in Milwaukee, WI. Her curricular offerings include four choruses, West African and Latin American Drumming, and class guitar. Her interests in non-western musical traditions led her to study drumming and vocal music at the Dagbe Cultural Institute in Ghana, West Africa in 2010, 2011, and the upcoming summer of She has been a member of the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance Committee for over ten years. Ms. Altman is a recipient of the Charles F. Wright Technology in Teaching Award and presents regularly at state and regional conferences, including the Wisconsin State Music Conference and the American Choral Directors Association North Central Division Conference.
