1 When they study our civilization two thousand years from now, When there will only be three things that Americans will be knows for: adf the Constitution, baseball and jazz music. They re the three most beautiful things Americans have ever created. Essayist Gerald Early (told to Ken Burns) M E D I A K I T
2 KUVO has a rich and celebrated history that began in 1982 with a handful of volunteers and their dream of founding a Hispaniccontrolled public radio station. In 1985 that idea became a reality when KUVO signed on the air for its first broadcast, with one fulltime person and three full-time volunteers. Volunteer djs, using donated records from personal collections and local record shops, went on the air with a format of jazz/fusion mixed with blues; to put a Latino signature on the music, they threw in a dash of Salsa! KUVO s staff in Governor John Hickenlooper In 2005, an influential quartet co-chaired KUVO's 20th Anniversary Celebration: Senator Ken Salazar (the first Hispanic elected to represent Colorado in the United States Senate and to serve as Attorney General of Colorado), former Denver mayor Federico Pena (Denver's first Hispanic mayor and former United States Secretary of Labor and Secretary of Transportation), former Denver mayor Wellington E. Webb (Denver's first African-American Mayor) and then Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, who is also a huge jazz fan and a current member of jazz89 KUVO. In 2013, KUVO joined the Rocky Mountain Broadcasting Network which includes Rocky Mountain PBS and the I-News Network. Today jazz89 KUVO broadcasts live 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has garnered national recognition for its diverse, quality programming. In 2014, KUVO was named by Down Beat magazine one of the 80 great things about Jazz today and The London Telegraph honored KUVO by naming it one of the top jazz and soul stations available in the world. 3 KUVO s Jazz Blend SPONTANEOUS. NEVER ORIDINARY. COMPLETELY GENUINE. KUVO broadcasts a popular mix of well established jazz styles. Louie Armstrong Frank Sinatra & Count Basie Charlie Parker Arturo Sandoval Wynton Marsalis Jazz Pioneers Origins of America s Authentic Musical Art Form KUVO honors the pioneers of jazz by featuring their compositions in their original form or with performances by the next generation of artists. Artists include Louie Armstrong, Fats Waller, Louis Jordan, Bix Beiderbecke, George Gershwin and Bessie Smith. Timeless classics include: Someone to Watch Over Me, Ain t Misbehavin, Basin Street Blues, Caldonia, and What a Wonderful World. Swing / Big Bands The Golden Age of Jazz Big Band music is identified most with the swing era, although there were large-jazz dance bands before and after the 1930 s & 1940 s. Artists include Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Lionel Hampton. Vocalists include Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday and Nancy Wilson. The swing era created many of the jazz standards that are still being recorded and performed. Bebop / Modern Jazz Artist with Improvisational Virtuosity Modern Jazz was a radical new music that exploded after World War II. Ensembles tended to be under seven pieces, and the soloist was free to get adventurous. Bebop divorced itself from popular and dancing audiences, uplifting jazz to an art music. Artists included John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk. Some of the biggest songs are Straight - No Chaser, Salt Peanuts, and Billie s Bounce. Latin Jazz Crazy Rhythms and Sonic Sounds Of all the post-swing styles, Latin Jazz has been the most consistently popular and it is easy to see why. The emphasis on percussion and Cuban rhythms make the style quite danceable and accessible. Essentially, it is a mixture of boporiented jazz with Latin percussion. Important artists include Poncho Sanchez, Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmeiri. KUVO was founded with a Latin Jazz tradition. New Traditionalist Today s Artist Enhancing Jazz s Legacy Today s jazz builds upon and blends the many styles of jazz music and includes New Orleans Soul/Funk, Jump Blues, Piano Standards, Strait Jazz and mix of all the above. Popular artists include The Roy Hargrove Quintet, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Diana Krall, Keith Jarrett and Dee Dee Bridgewater. KUVO features NPR news at the top of the hour weekdays 6am 11pm. O: M: rob@kuvo.org (2)
4 Audience Composition KUVO s format of jazz, news and community involvement connects with a large, culturally diverse audience. An estimated 100,000 people tune-in each week; over 9,500 listeners are counted as listener/members contributing over $ 800,000 annually to support the station. 6 Scarborough and Doubleday research compares a radio stations audiences lifestyle and leisure activities by comparing them to the market average. For example, KUVO listeners are 92% more likely to visit an art museum than the average person in the Denver market. This is a profile of KUVO s listeners: KUVO listeners enjoy outdoor activities Downhill Skiing Jogging Golf Biking (Mountain) Bicycling Gardening Source: MRI Doublebase / KUVO listeners attend cultural activities Visit Art Museum: 92% more likely Attend Musical Concert: Attend Live Theater: Attend Educational Seminar: Visit Botanic Gardens: Attend Ballet/Dance Recital: 61% more likely 51% more likely 28% more likely 27% more likely 24% more likely 24% more likely Audience Profile (Lifestyle & Leisure) 89% more likely 58% more likely 46% more likely 46% more likely 35% more likely KUVO listeners are engaged with their communities Written a letter to editor: 92% Served on committee for local organization 82% Contribute to an arts/cultural group 49% Attended meeting on town/school affairs 38% Contributed > $ 250 to non-profit group 33% Vote in local election 30% O: M: rob@kuvo.org (5)
7 KUVO listeners have a different relationship with the station and that relationship makes underwriting in a non-commercial environment more effective. Here s how underwriting announcements are more impactful than traditional advertising: The halo effect is the positive association that public radio listeners attribute to the companies that sponsor the programming. 3 of 4 public radio listeners hold a more positive opinion of a company that supports public radio. 66% of public radio listeners prefer to purchase products and services from public radio supporters when price and quality are equal. 85% of public radio listeners have taken a direct action as a result of sponsorship. BREAK THRU THE CLUTTER! KUVO has less than 2 minutes of underwriting messages per hour and there is never more than two sponsorship messages heard back to back. This limited inventory allows each sponsor message to be heard loud and clear in an environment that is free of the cluttered messaging that is heard on commercial radio stations. 8 out of 10 public radio listeners believe there is no clutter of sponsor messages on public radio. NO ADS MEANS MORE CREDABILITY! Underwriting messages are held to a higher standard than traditional commercial advertisement; And that s why KUVO listeners will stay tuned during the messages and respond: 3 out of 5 public radio listeners find sponsor messages they hear on public radio to be more credible than advertising heard on commercial radio stations.
