Name Class My Music Book for Link Up 2018 The Orchestra Sings Contents...Page Goals for Success...2 Song Lyrics...3- Simple Melody Simple Gifts Ode to Joy New World Symphony To Make Words Sing. 13 Student Composition...14 ü I will learn about reading music, working in a musical ensemble, and concert behavior. ü I will unite with other students for a concert. ü I will sing and play my very best to create beautiful music with my Omaha Symphony! 1

Students will need to have prior knowledge of basic rhythmic notation and absolute pitch names. Performance GOALS for Link Up - The Orchestra Sings Goal 1 I can play and sing Simple Melody. Student can demonstrate correct playing position, beautiful tone, and appropriate ensemble behavior. Student is able to sing, read, and play a recorder melody using B, A, G (solfege, absolute pitches, traditional counting). Goal 2 I can play and sing Simple Gifts. Student is able to sing, read, and play a recorder melody using B, A, G. **(STAR PART: B, A, G, plus high C and D, low D and F#) Goal 3 I can play and sing Ode to Joy. Student is able to sing, read, and play a recorder melody using B, A, G. **(STAR PART: B, A, G, plus high C and D). Goal 4 I can play and sing New World Symphony. Student is able to sing, read, and play a recorder melody using B, A, G, high C. **(STAR PART: B, A, G, high C plus low tones: low C, D, and E. Goal I can play and sing To Make Words Sing. Student is able to sing, read, and play a recorder melody using B, A, G, high C and D. Goal 6 I can play, create, and write a melody using tones: GABCD. Student can compose a melody demonstrating an understanding of rhythm. Student can play their composition. Student can play the chosen Student Composition. Goal 7 I can demonstrate appropriate concert etiquette. Enter the auditorium and be seated quietly. Always keep your feet on the floor. Never stand, turn, or move around while music is being played. It is impolite to talk, or even whisper, while the music is being performed. Remain still, watch, and listen. Watch the conductor when the music stops to decide when to applaud. Appropriate applause at the right time is your way of saying thank you! Remember to be respectful to all adults making your experience possible. Most Importantly, Have Fun! 2

Simple Melody When we sing a simple melody, and we blend our notes together. It makes something more of you and me, when we sing together. And no matter that we re far apart, or misunderstand each other, Music always seems to reach our hearts, and bring us all together. Like sisters and brothers, the feeling is strong. With one another, our hearts raised in song. When we sing a simple melody, and we blend our notes together. It makes something more of you and me, when we sing together. Simple Gifts Tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free, Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gain'd, To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed, To turn, turn, it will be our delight, Til by turning, turning, we come 'round right. 3

Ode to Joy Joyful as we join in singing, Anthems old yet strong and bright. Near and far to all we re bringing Voices filled with hope and light. Singing brings us all together When our voices would be small. Gives us power undivided, now united one and all. (Repeat chorus) Joyful in the songs we re singing, Joined in music and in word. With the power that we re bringing As one voice we will be heard. Singing brings us all together When our voices would be small. Gives us power undivided, now united one and all. (Repeat chorus) New World Going home, going home, I m a going home; Quiet like, some still day, I m just going home. It s not far, just close by, through an open door; Work all done, care laid by, going to fear no more. Mother s there, specting me - Father s waiting, too; Lots of folks, gathered there - All the friends I knew. 4

To Make Words Sing To make words sing is a wonderful thing Because in a song words last so long So long So long So long So long So long (Switch to recorder for interlude) To make words sing is a wonderful thing Because in a song words last so long So long So long So long So long So long
