Words may be used more than once. Ferdinand of Aragon Isabella of Castile Joan of Arc plague Reconquista In the 1300s, a (1) across Europe and Asia. A (2), known as the Black Death, swept is a disease that spreads quickly and kills many people. In 1429 a French peasant girl told Charles, the French prince, that her favorite saints had urged her to free France from the English. Charles became king, but the English captured the girl, and she was burned at the stake. She later became known as (3). During the Middle Ages, Muslims ruled most of the Iberian Peninsula, where Spain and Portugal are today. Most Christians, however, opposed Muslim rule. Their struggle to take back the Iberian Peninsula was called the (4). In 1469 Princess (5) married Prince (6). They later became king and queen and joined their lands into one country called Spain. 7 Name Date Class GUIDED READING ACTIVITY 15-5 The Late Middle Ages Directions: Filling in the Blanks Reading the section and completing the sentences below will help you learn more about the late Middle Ages. Refer to your textbook to fill in the blanks. In the 1300s, a terrible (1) called the Black Death moved through Asia and Europe. About (2) million people died in Europe of the Black Death. The plague helped weaken the (3) The (4) system by reducing the number of serfs. War was between the (5) and the (6) over Normandy. A young peasant girl s faith stirred French soldiers fighting in the war to take the city of (7). The English later captured her and burned her at the stake. She became known as (8). The (9) eventually won the war, although they spent much of their money in the fight. The (10) controlled most of Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages. The (11) against their rule and began the (12) were to try to take back the Iberian Peninsula. The Muslims eventually lost their land except for (13). Above the time line, indicate the places in Asia and Africa where the plague spread. Below the time line, indicate the places in Europe where it spread. EUROPE ASIA AND AFRICA Background Aterrible plague, known as the Black Death, swept across Asia, Africa, and Europe in the 1330s, killing millions. The Black Plague probably began somewhere in the Gobi, a desert in central Asia. Trade between China, India, the Middle East, and Europe made it possible for the plague to spread rapidly throughout these regions. ASIA AND AFRICA The plague was carried to Alexandria in The next year, the plague moved to Libya and Damascus. The following year, it reached Makkah. The plague erupted again in China in EUROPE The plague appeared in Caffa in The next year, the plague appeared in Sicily. The following year, it reached Pisa. By 1349 the plague was in France and Germany. Two years later, it reached Eastern Europe. CHAPTER
