1 NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release: March 5, 2013 CONTACT: Ben Taylor ext.220 Santa Rosa Symphony Summer Music Academy July 8-27, 2013 Early Bird Discount for registration by April 1, 2013 (SANTA ROSA, CA) The Santa Rosa Symphony Education Department presents a 3-week intensive for beginning-to-advanced young musicians, with some classes also available to adult students. The Summer Music Academy (SMA) takes place at Sonoma Country Day School and runs from July 8 through 27, with final performances Saturday, July 27, in the Jackson Theater on the Day School campus. Classes run Monday through Friday, and for the first time, students can enroll in a full day of music classes, including instrumental workshops, music theory, rhythm workshop and choir. Beginning students can learn to play an instrument for the first time, and advanced students can further their music studies while making new friends with musicians from across Sonoma County. Beginning workshops are offered in guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass, woodwind and brass instruments; ensembles for experienced young instrumentalists of all ability levels are offered in percussion, winds, strings and jazz. Specialty classes, such a Strings Master Class, Conducting, Bass Intensive and Composition are also available. Tuition discount if registered by April 1 Summer Music Academy tuition varies by class and ranges from $285 - $700. Some classes are also available to adults, including beginning violin, viola, cello and bass (see class list later in this release). To receive a $25 discount on tuition, payment in full with completed registration form is due by April 1, For detailed class descriptions and fees, see the Summer Music Academy page of the Santa Rosa Symphony website. 2 Music faculty Twelve dedicated professional instructors make up this year s SMA faculty. They are seasoned musicians and educators active throughout Northern California and beyond. They are Allen Biggs, Eric Cabalo, Dawn Dover, Daniel Gianola-Norris, Jeannette Isenberg, Dr. Richard Loheyde, Carly Nacmanie, Jordan Wardlaw, Aaron Westman, Dr. Brian Wilson, Ivy Zenobi-Cochran and Karen Zimmerman. The classes they will teach and short bios can be found at the end of this release. SMA Feedback With plenty of enthusiasm from students and parents alike, the Santa Rosa Symphony Summer Music Academy promises a unique, fun experience for everyone from beginners to experienced players. Allen performed with Dave Brubeck in Spring 2007, and has worked with the noted choreographer Sergio Trujililo. Recordings include the cast albums of A Chorus Line, Happy End, and Lamentation and Praises (with Chanticleer) which won two Grammy awards. He is a founding member of Orient Express, a four-piece ensemble which performs music of the gypsy diaspora, and created the exciting music education program, The Bucket Brigade. Mr. Biggs performs in schools on behalf of the California and Santa Rosa symphonies. Eric Cabalo Beginning Guitar and Guitar Ensemble A dedicated educator, Eric Cabalo is on the faculty at Sonoma State University where he is the director of classical guitar studies. In addition, he teaches privately and is the founder/director of 12th Fret Guitar Studios, a guitar program providing classical guitar instruction for children and
4 adults. Mr. Cabalo has also published two method books: Class Guitar Method (used by several colleges) and GuitarPlay, a classical guitar method for children. Dawn Dover Chamber Strings, Strings Master Class Series Dawn Dover received her degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and has performed professionally in chamber music and orchestra settings throughout Europe, the USA and Japan. She was a student of Ronald Copes of the Juilliard String Quartet and Stuart Canin. Ms. Dover was an original member of the New Century Chamber Orchestra and played in the San Francisco Symphony for 12 years. A passionate and dedicated teacher, she teaches private students, music classes at Credo High School in Rohnert Park, and is the Director for the Santa Rosa Symphony s Young People s Chamber Orchestra. Jeanette Isenberg Violin Workshops, Intermediate String Orchestra Jeanette Isenberg holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and divides her time between teaching and performance. She has diverse musical talents; she plays violin with the Santa Rosa Symphony, classical chamber ensembles, jazz combos and country swing bands. Dr. Richard Loheyde Conducting Dr. Richard Loheyde is the conductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra and the assistant conductor of the Santa Rosa Symphony. He began his music studies as a violinist, with early training in the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras and at Tanglewood Music Center, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Recent conducting positions include director of orchestral activities at the University of Evansville, assistant conductor of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, and director of orchestral activities at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He has degrees from the University of Michigan, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Texas at Austin Carly Nacmanie Music Appreciation, Choir and Music Theory Carly Nacmanie earned a B.A. in Psychology from New York University and an M.A. in Music Education from Hunter College at the City University of New York. She has taught children of all ages and is extremely passionate about motivating students to succeed, especially through music. A diverse musician, Ms. Nacmanie has been playing piano, clarinet and singing since her early childhood. She is currently the Band and Classroom Music teacher for grades K-8 at Forestville Union Schools. Committed to equal access to music education for all students, she helped to create Harmony Grows, an El-Sistema inspired free music education project for underserved students in Sonoma County, volunteering with her colleagues Ben Gustin and Christina Penrose. Ms. Nacmanie additionally enjoys the one-on-one, individualized experience of teaching private lessons and maintains an active private studio. Daniel Gianola-Norris, trumpet Brass Workshop, Music Appreciation and Music Theory Dan Gianola-Norris has a Master s degree in music from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He
5 regularly performs with the Santa Rosa Symphony, Modesto Symphony, Santa Cruz County Symphony and the Midsummer Mozart Festival. He is an instructor at Music to My Ears, a music education center located in Cotati. Jordan Wardlaw, saxophone Jazz Ensemble, Woodwind Workshop and Chamber Winds A versatile performer and instructor, Jordan Wardlaw is a member of the San Francisco swing sensation Lee Press On and the Nails, Sonoma County jazz fusion quintet Blusion, and the R&B rock group Crossfire. Mr. Wardlaw has also performed with the Santa Rosa Symphony and is a frequent performer with San Francisco s Golden Gate Park Band. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies from the Thornton School of Music at USC. Aaron Westman Violin and Viola Workshops Aaron Westman regularly plays a leading role with the American Bach Soloists, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Musica Angelica, Sonoma and San Francisco Bach Choir orchestras, Jubilate, Bach Collegium San Diego, LA Master Chorale and Agave Baroque, which won the 2009 Early Music Americana/APAP competition. He holds a Master of Music degree from the Indiana University School of Music, and has taught at CalArts in Los Angeles. Dr. Brian Wilson, composer Composition and Songwriting Composer/Conductor Brian Scott Wilson is a native of Lynn, MA, and a graduate of New England Conservatory (B.M.), the University of Chicago (M.A.) and the University of Arizona (D.M.A.). His teachers include Malcolm Peyton, Edward Diamente, Dan Asia, Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran (composition) and Barbara Schubert, Michael Walters, Gregg Hanson and Kurt Klippstater (conducting). He has participated in conducting workshops under Frederick Fennell and Sergiu Commissiona. Dr. Wilson is Chair of the Department of Music at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA, where he also teaches Music Theory and Composition. Ivy Zenobi Cochran Violin Workshops Ivy Zenobi Cochran is a certified instructor from the Suzuki Association of the Americas and holds a Master s in Viola Performance from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor s in Violin Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She currently enjoys an active performing and teaching career in Northern California. Karen Zimmerman Cello/Bass Workshops, Bass Intensive and Prelude String Orchestra Karen Zimmerman holds both Bachelor s and Master s degrees in music from the Juilliard School. While in New York, she played with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera along with appearing with various chamber ensembles throughout the city. Ms. Zimmerman now plays with the Santa Rosa Symphony along with other local orchestras, has an active teaching schedule, and is the Librarian for the Santa Rosa Symphony. # # #
