3 OT Guide I About this Guide The number of Orchestral Tools is constantly growing and covers all instrumental families of the orchestra, with some collections even branching out into non-orchestral instruments. This Guide describes all contained articulations as well as their technical properties (velocity layers, Round Robins, and many more). This document is a special version of the Guide that only contains features applicable to the collections listed below. You can download the full Guide that applies to all Orchestral Tools collections in our Helpdesk. The following table lists all collections covered by this Guide with their current Capsule version as well as the minimum Kontakt version. 4 OT Guide II Introduction Welcome to the Orchestral Tools Guide! Orchestral Tools provides high-quality sampled instruments for composers. Thanks to our Capsule Scripting Framework developed in-house, all Orchestral Tools collections look and work in a very similar way. names, labeling and all technical terms are identical in every collections, so you will find it easy to find your way around. 5 OT Guide III Recording and Concept We are happy to have found a sonic home for our collections at the Teldex Scoring Stage in Berlin. The large recording stage at Teldex looks back on a long tradition of many well known and Grammy award winning recordings. Famous orchestras, like the Berlin Philharmonics and great film composers from the USA and Europe trust and love the wide and clear acoustics of this room. One of the best sounding scoring stages in Europe, this room together with a fantastic complement of legendary microphones catapults our work to a new level of orchestral sampling. The quality of a sampled collection begins with the recording. Every Orchestral Tools collection is recorded at 96khz with state of the art equipment. The full editing and post-production process uses these 96khz recordings without downsampling. We very rarely denoise our recordings and never treat them in any other automated way. If tuning is needed, it is done by ear without resorting to tuning algorithms. Only at the very end, right before the samples are mapped into their instruments, the content is converted to 48khz for best use of resources. Our goal is to provide a set of tools that easily adapts to any workflow and creates a coherent sonic representation of the orchestra. The main way we achieved this is by recording every instrument in its orchestral position. All collections come pre-panned and pre-mixed with their respective volumes balanced. If there are multiple types of the same instrument, they are recorded in slightly different positions, yet still in their general section area. The different snare drums in Berlin Percussion, for example, have been recorded slightly spread over the general "snare drum area" within the percussion section. This allows you to have a very wide and full sound when combining multiple instruments. We deliberately choose to also record non-traditional instruments as belonging to a symphonic setup, like electric guitars and a drumset in our Metropolis Ark Series. Modern media scoring introduces a host of new instruments into the established orchestral lineup and we feel these instruments deserve the same care and precision in fitting them into the symphonic sound as their traditional counterparts. All collections feature a number of microphone positions commonly used in orchestral recording. The position of these microphones is identical in every collection, which means that for example the Tree is much nearer to the string section that it is to the percussion section (because the percussion section is situated at the back of the orchestra). This enabled lively acoustics that come pre-mixed for the respective stage position. The choice of mic positions also depends greatly on the instrument. Some instruments, especially in the percussion section, benefit greatly from a M/S position to enable accurately positioning the sound source. Wherever possible, similar instruments use the same mapping scheme so it is usually possible to transfer MIDI data from one instrument to another easily. This is especially important and useful for percussion. 4 Recording and Concept

6 OT Guide IV Berlin Series The Berlin Series is Orchestral Tools' ongoing journey to harnessing the sound of the Teldex Scoring stage in an all-purpose orchestral sample collection. Every major section of the orchestra is represented by one Main Collection, which contains all essentials instruments and articulations and forms the backbone of any symphonic piece. These collections are expanded and continued by special expansion collections, which add additional instruments or playing techniques. The following table lists all Berlin Series Collections currently released - underlined names jump to a description of its content and unique features. You can download a version of this Guide that applies to all released Collections on our Helpdesk. When you load any Berlin Series patch inside Kontakt, the instrument slot will show an icon representing the orchestral section as shown below. 7 OT Guide 4.1 Berlin Orchestra Inspire Berlin Orchestra Inspire draws from the Berlin Series flagship collections to deliver a first grade sketching and mobile tool, perfect for use when on the road or to realize ideas quickly. Carefully curated instruments as well as new ensembles for all sections across the whole range bring the Berlin Series full circle with a tool for when things get intense. When musical ideas flow, being quick is crucial. That's why we designed a virtual orchestra that combines a phenomenal sound with the capabilities of a fast writing tool. Use Berlin Orchestra Inspire where ever you want to be creative - All you need is a single machine with 8GB of RAM. Phenomenal sound using minimal computer resources. Berlin Orchestra lnspire is a layout orchestra for quick and stunning results. lts sample content is mostly based on the Berlin Series which is used by many composers around the world and in countless Hollywood Productions. As Berlin Orchestra Inspire shares the same sonic qualities as the Berlin Orchestra, it is the perfect way to extend your Berlin Series with its impressive layout patches. Instrumentation and Recording Berlin Orchestra Inspire contains twenty-three instruments or instrumental sections grouped into seven categories, which are divided into patches containing a single articulation as well as multi articulation patches. All instruments within a section are different instruments played by different musicians, not just additional recording passes. All patches feature a pre-produced Mix microphone position for easy out of the box use. Additionally, all core articulations have been recorded with multiple velocity layers for realistic dynamics. 9 OT Guide Instruments The sections and instruments in Berlin Orchestra Inspire provide you with a comprehensive orchestra for sketching and mobile use. This section briefly explains the individual instruments and points out usage scenarios and expansion options. Full Orchestra The Full Orchestra features Sustains and Staccato stretched over the whole range of the keyboard as well as a special effects patch. Strings The Strings section provides different section sizes and line-ups, from a Whole Ensemble to Solo Strings. Strings Whole Ensemble The Strings Whole Ensemble spans the whole string range and features essential articulations. First Chairs Whole Ensemble The First Chairs Ensemble spans a string quartet over the whole range and is the perfect full-range complement to Berlin Strings - First Chairs. High Strings 8va With full legato, the High Strings in Octaves are great for soaring melody lines. Low Strings 8va Again providing full legato, the Low Strings in Octaves work wonders in the low end and also feature pizzicato. Violins I & II To emphasize melodies, the unison Violins I & II feature full legato as well as spiccato. Brass Derived from Berlin Brass, the Brass Line-up combines full ensembles including mutes with carefully selected instrument combinations and solo instruments. Brass Whole Ensemble The Brass Whole Ensemble has the whole brass choir spread over the keyboard. Brass Muted Ensemble Fitting perfectly with the Whole Ensemble, Brass Muted Ensemble features the same playable range with Muted Brass. Trumpet & Horn Ensemble 8va For bold melodies, the Trumpet & Horn Ensemble in Octaves delivers with full legato, staccato and marcato. Trombone Ensemble & Tuba 8va The Trombone Ensemble & Tuba in Octaves will provide thunderous low end with sustain and shorts. 8

Solo Trumpet The Solo Trumpet with legato and staccato brings shining clarity to the upper regions. Woodwinds Sourced from Berlin Woodwinds, the Woodwinds give you a full ensemble, octaved ensembles and solo instruments. Woodwinds Whole Ensemble The Woodwinds Whole Ensemble spreads the whole winds choir over the keyboard with sustain, staccato and a full Trills Orchestrator. Flutes & Clarinets 8va Providing full legato and trills, the Flutes & Clarinets are set in octaves are work great for melodies. Bassoons & Clarinets 8va The Bassoons & Clarinets Ensemble in Octaves features full legato, too. Solo Flute With true legato, the Solo Flute works great in all situations. Solo Clarinet Completing the woodwinds line-up, the Solo Clarinet also offers true legato. Percussion The Percussion section takes its content from Berlin Percussion to provide a solid base for percussion parts. Percussion Essentials The Percussion Essentials unite important percussion instruments in one patch mapped per the MIDI Spec. Aided by the special sections outlined below, this patch is a one-stop solution to basic percussion parts. Marimba & Xylophone The Marimba & Xylophone patch unites two of the most important melodic percussion instruments as an ensemble. Glockenspiel The Glockenspiel is played with a medium mallet. Timpani A set of two concert timpani played with normal mallets providing single hits and rolls completes the percussion section. Harp Derived from the critically acclaimed Symphonic Sphere harp, the harp has been treated with custom impulse responses from the Teldex Scoring Stage Orchestral Tools Schwarzer & Mantik GmbH

11 OT Guide Steinway D The Steinway D is directly adapted from The Orchestral Grands. Notable s: Berlin Orchestra Inspire features basic articulations for numerous instruments and sections. Some specials include: - Full Orchestra patches including effects - Dedicated High and Low Strings - A Muted Brass Ensemble - Special Solo Woodwinds and Brass - A Concert Harp and Piano Most articulations are also available as Time Machine patches, which allow you to adjust the sample length dynamically. Expansion Options: Berlin Orchestra Inspire is derived from other Berlin Series Collections, so if you want a bigger boat, any Berlin Series Collection will expand your sonic possibilities! 10
