2 Music Department Minors To: MaryAnn Dowdell/ Chair, College Curriculum Committee From: Rob Roman, Chair, Music Department Date: November 24, 2014 Re: Music Department Minors Introduction The Music Department currently offers four minors: Music Performance, Music Theory, Music Literature, and Audio Production. Since 2010, the Department developed an APAC assessment plan, and underwent thorough review by NASM [the National Association of Schools of Music). Due to these exercises, and suggestions from NASM/ the Department's Curriculum Committee has revised three of the four minors presently offered and proposed a new Music Industry Minor, available only to students in the BA in Music program. The Audio Production Minor is available only to students in the BA in Music Industry program, and is not being revised at this time. None of the Minor revision requirements or new MI Minor add new courses, or require additional staff expertise. I. Music Performance Minor Justification for moving aural skills to elective course: Many students who take this minor are Music or Music Industry students who take aural skills as part of their major requirements. We have moved aural skills to the elective course list, so that Music and Majors Industry students will receive more performance opportunities in the Minor. We expect to advise non-music and non-music Industry students who are interested in the minor to take the aural skills class [unless they have equivalent course experience from transfer or AP courses). Justification for addition of auditions, and for declaration of primary instrument: Declaration and auditions on a single instrument ensure that SUNY Oneonta Music Department standards are meeting the expectations of artistic integrity and excellence as outlined by our accrediting body, the National Association of Schools of Music [NASM). Requiring students to declare and audition on a primary instrument before they begin the minor cpursework, will help our faculty to better advise students. This change will also help determine adequate number of staff for each instrument [appropriate staff numbers, as well as type of vocal and instrumental specialists) to accommodate the number of performance courses required to manage and maintain this minor. At the moment, we have no way to track these students, and therefore, no way to determine whether or not our resources [faculty and facilities) are being used effectively.

3 Present Music Performance Minor Applied Music 14-20sh MUSC 170 (1 semester) 2 sh MUSC 270 (2 semesters) 4-6 sh Ensemble Requirement 8-12 sh (Ensembles can be taken for 1-3 credits) MUSC 280 (4 semesters) (must perform in at least 3 different ensembles) Aural Skills: MUSC 270 2sh Revised Music Performance Minor Audition Requirement: Audition (or recommendation by primary instructor) is required for any non-music Major pursuing this minor (mcluding Music Industry), and au students must declare a primary instrument with the Music Department office prior to begiimmg the minor. The Music Department office will initiate contact between the student and the primary Advanced Applied Music instructor who will conduct the audition. Applied Music Requirement:! 70, 270 8sh Choose MUSC 170 or MUSC 270 by advisement Criteria: All semesters must be taken on the same instrument family. Only one semester of MUSC 170 can be applied to minor. Electives 3 sh Choose from: MUSC 139*, 221,230,247*, 249*, 270, 350,351 *May NOT be used as an elective by Music Industry majors. Ensemble Requirement: sh Choose by advisement Ensembles can be taken for 1-3 credits. Criteria: Regardless of the number of credits of each course, at least four semesters (on their primary instrument) are required. Students must perform (on their primary instrument) in at least one semester of a large ensemble/ a smau ensemble and one that includes miprovised music. Music Theory Minor Justification for revisions to the Music Theory Minor: This design for the Music Theory Minor provides a more viable and defined program of study because it requires and suggests more diversified coursework. This is a minor that would now provide better balance among Music Theory and related courses, and whose variety and flexibility will be attractive to more students. The proposed model allows for more theory-specialized offerings that go beyond the scope of what the Music Major would take. It also relieves the student from the somewhat irrelevant performance requirement In addition/ the revisions make the Music Theory Minor available to other majors, including Music Industry majors.

Music Literature Minor Justification for adding Music Industry courses to the Literature Minor: A Minor in Music Literature is suitable not only for Music degree students seeking a focused area of study, but also Music Industry degree students, and students outside the Department who wish to gain musical knowledge especially as it relates to the literature and practices of music, both historical and contemporary. Courses in music literature examine cultural, social, theoretical, and stylistic attributes of music and exist throughout all levels of the music curriculum. This proposal expands the choices of required theoretical courses to include the Music Industry survey courses that focus on popular music theory, thereby making a music literature minor possible for students interested in aspects of popular music.
