3 Concert Attire Men: School Issued Tuxedo, White Shirt, and Bow Tie. You Supply: Black Shoes and Black Socks Women: School Issued Black Dress. You Supply: Nylons and Black Shoes Concert attire will be provided by the music department and must be worn at each concert. We are a performing group and need to look uniform. Anyone not in compliance with this rule will not be allowed to perform. All attire must be clean and pressed for each performance. Uniforms must be returned at the end of the year in the same condition. Central District and All State As a High School String Ensemble member, you will have the opportunity to audition for Central District and All-State Orchestra, organized by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association. In order to be eligible for the Central District groups you must be a member in good standing of the high school orchestra. The auditions for Districts are held on Saturday, November 16th, The rehearsals and concert are held in mid-january. Students who score high enough on the districts audition can audition for All-State Orchestra on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 (snow date 2/1/14). Grading & Attendance Students will be graded based on how well they regularly demonstrate appropriate technique, rehearsal skills, and understanding of the music. Students are expected to contribute to the learning community through active class participation and adherence to the ensemble s rules. Students will be graded based on their playing with the full ensemble and by playing in small groups or individually. Occasionally there may be written assessments or small projects. Please note that the percentages below are approximate and will be adjusted based on the number of assignments of each type in a given semester. 30 % Quizzes, Assignments & Assessments Grade This could include demonstrating good technique, improvement, musicianship, music literacy, and sight reading. Students may be required to play an excerpt of their part from the music studied in small groups or by making a recording of themselves. Grades will be based both on meeting standards and based on a student s improvement. Not all students are at the same level of study so grading is based on experience and improvement. Students folders and music will be graded based on how well students complete in-class assignments, which may include marking in articulations, dynamics, bowings and rhythmic analysis. Other assignments could be given as well and could be counted as quizzes. 40 % Classroom Rehearsal Grade This includes demonstrating appropriate rehearsal skills by consistently playing well, playing with appropriate posture, having rehearsal materials (music and pencil), contributing to classroom discussions and activities (such as group-work in sections), and demonstration of appropriate rehearsal etiquette including adherence to classroom procedures, rules and expectations. 2
4 30 % Performance Grade This includes attendance and participation at scheduled rehearsals and concerts. (If there are no performances in a term the quiz grade will count 40 points and the classroom grade 60 points.) Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Performances will be weighted as a major exam. All performers must stay for the entire concert. We are a music department and should encourage one another regardless of which group we are in. Your grade will be affected if you arrive late or leave early. We may schedule a dress rehearsal or other after-school rehearsal, to allow the orchestra to rehearse with other musicians. Such after-school rehearsals will be announced far in advance and will be graded the same way as a concert. If a student misses a performance or an after-school rehearsal due to serious illness or emergency they will have two weeks to schedule and complete a makeup assignment that will consist of playing all of the songs from the concert and listening to and analyzing (verbally or in writing) recordings from concerts. If a student might be unable to attend a performance for a reason other than illness or emergency, their parent should contact me (Mr. Brody) as far in advance as possible. Unexcused absences from a concert or failure to complete a makeup assignment will result in a reduction in a student s grade for the term by two full letter grades. A detailed performance calendar is included at the front of the handbook. An updated calendar is also available on the music department web site. Please be sure to check it regularly. By carefully planning your schedule, you will be able to attend all performances and still maintain other activities. Below are some problems that may occur and some solution: PROBLEM (EXCUSES) SOLUTION 1. I had to work 1. Make arrangement with your boss 2. Couldn t get a ride 2. Ask a friend 3. I didn t know about the rehearsal 3. Be responsible and mark rehearsals in your calendar now! 4. I had lots of homework 4. Manage your time and plan in advance 5. I got tickets for a. 5. Calendars are given and updated be responsible If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me (Isaac Brody) by at ibrody@hopkinton.k12.ma.us or call x1532 3
