1 Music Talent Scholarships! Whittier College is pleased to offer special scholarships to entering freshmen who demonstrate promise in music. Music talent scholarships are valued up to $12,000 and are renewable for four years of study at Whittier College provided the recipient maintains a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0, enrolls in MUS 70 Introduction to Music Theory and Musicianship during freshman year, and is an active participant each semester in at least one college musical ensemble. Please note that students may also apply for talent scholarships from the Art and Theatre Departments, but if offered multiple talent scholarships the student can only accept an award from one department and must decline all other offers. The Whittier College Music Department offers preparation for a wide range of career opportunities and students with serious aspirations in music are encouraged to consider music as a major. In addition to applied music, class instruction is offered in conducting, music literature and materials, theory, music business and music technology. A digital piano and music technology lab is available for student use and is integrated in several course offerings. A state-ofthe-art digital recording studio is also utilized by the Department for all music technology classes and student recording projects. Students may also develop areas of specialization or individual projects under faculty supervision in related fields such as church music, management, musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, music industries, and musical theater. FALL 2018 APPLICANTS Live Auditions. It is preferred that students entering Whittier in the Fall semester audition in person. This year, auditions will be held Saturday, February 24 th, You must contact the Music Department at (562) to schedule your audition. You may be accompanied by one live musician. If you are unable to bring your own accompanist, please notify us prior to your visit and we will do our best to provide one. Taped accompaniments are discouraged. The Music Department cannot accommodate live auditions on alternate dates. YouTube Auditions. Students unable to schedule live auditions must submit YouTube videos. Videos of live public performances will not be accepted; treat this exactly as you would a live audition. YouTube videos must be submitted no later than Friday, February 16 th, 2018 to guarantee consideration. When uploading your YouTube video: Make sure that your video is NOT set to Private o You may set the video to Unlisted to prevent unauthorized viewers Title your video Whittier Music Audition: [Your Name] Include the titles and composers of the works performed in your video description the video s link to talent@whittier.edu Please contact Talent Scholarship Coordinator David Laine at talent@whittier.edu before Friday, February 16 th, 2018 if you need assistance submitting your YouTube audition. Audition Material. Students should prepare two contrasting pieces; it is strongly preferred that one of these pieces be from the standard classical repertoire in your instrument or voice. Spring Applicants cannot audition live, and must submit a YouTube Audition following the above directions. It is strongly encouraged that you fill this form out on your computer, save it, and your electronic submission. One Essay by the Applicant: In one to two pages please express the importance of music in your life presently and what you see as the place it will hold in your future. 1 Instructor Recommendation: Must be completed by a music teacher, director, or private music instructor. Instructors must submit recs directly to talent@whittier.edu. Instructor recs submitted by students will not be accepted. This is a fillable PDF form. It is strongly encouraged that you this form to your instructor to fill out on their computer and submit electronically. Audition: Either attend the Live Auditions or submit a YouTube Audition.
