1 Course Description: Putnam High School Musical Theatre Teacher: Ms. Fadrowski Phone: (860) Ext Level: College Prep NEW MUSIC DEPARTMENT WEBSITE!! This course will give students an opportunity to learn about music through performance and study of Musical Theatre. This course is a broad overview of the history, styles, works and artists of the musical theatre genre. Both theoretical and practical, this course covers basic musical theatre performing, vocal production, movement and music theory. Course Description/Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the vocabulary of musical theater Students will demonstrate an ability to interpret and analyze a variety of musical theatre styles Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements of musical theatre in student the book, musical score, lyrics and staging requirements Students will demonstrate an understanding of the history of music theatre Students will demonstrate an appreciation for musical theatre performance Required Materials: 1-inch Black 3-ring binder (please speak to me personally if you are financially unable to purchase) Pencils (No Pens) ** Black binders are part of daily grades and are required for participation in this class** Paper to take notes on Expectations: 1. Follow all rules of the student handbook 2. Students need to be in class everyday and on time 3. Every student will come to class prepared with; Pencil Black 3-ring Binder Homework/assignments 4. By the time the bell rings students should be seated with their binder and pencil 5. Ask questions! 6. Take pride in your personal accomplishments and show support for your peers and yourself. 7. Remember: if you re early, you re on time; if you re on time, you re late. Grading: Daily Grade: Attendance/Tardy/Participation/Behavior: 25% Quizzes/Homework: 15% Exams/Tests: 20% Projects/Presentations: 20% Papers: 20%
2 Daily Grade: Participation and being prepared for class is the main grade for this class and will be part of your daily grade. Each student will receive 10 points as part of their daily grade. It is broken down as follows: Daily Grade Breakdown Tardy Prepared with black notebook and assignments Participation Points Rewarded 2 Points 3 Points 5 Points Tardy: First 4 unexcused tardies is a 20 minute teacher detention. 5 th tardy or more is an office referral. Extra Help: Please do not hesitate to come and see me for extra help!! My door is always open for all students. I can also be contacted via . Late Work: For every day an assignment is late, 10 points will be taken off the final grade. If a quiz is missed the student must make it up the next day they are present to class. Extra Credit: At any point in time throughout the semester students can go see a live theatre production. Students are asked to submit a ticket or program, as well as a 2 page review. Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: Any cell phones/electronic devices that are seen in class or makes a sound during class, will be confiscated and will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. The use of cellular/electronic devices are prohibited by the school handbook. Course Requirements All students will write a paper on a composer or lyricist of his/her choosing Students will work in teams on a variety of projects highlighting the various components of musical theatre including script analysis, character analysis, context, history, style, musical scoring and production. Students will watch musical theatre productions during class and reflect on them. Students will learn about improvisation and acting techniques Students will learn about applying stage make-up
