15 Classes and lessons of varying lengths are offered between June 11 and August 24, There will be no classes or lessons held on July 4, Music at the Beck Center The Music department at the Beck Center for the Arts will foster a love for music in students of all ages. From music classes to private lessons to our ensembles, students have many opportunities to explore the joys of making music. Our Early Childhood Classes are designed to introduce children from Birth to 6 years to musical instruments and simple music concepts that will encourage future musical growth. If your child is constantly singing around the house, enjoys pounding out rhythms on pots and pans, or if you are interested in having your child eventually take private lessons, we suggest they begin by enrolling in either Kids-N-Tunes or Dalcroze Eurhythmics. After taking Dalcroze, we suggest parents register their children for Instrumental Classes, Private Lessons, or Vocal Classes so they may continue to explore music making. Whether or not your child has taken Dalcroze, we suggest you consider our Instrumental and Vocal Classes and our Suzuki Violin Lessons for children. Private Lessons Private lessons at the Beck Center for the Arts are offered to anyone who wishes to learn an instrument or to increase their ability on an instrument they are studying already. Our music staff is an accomplished group of instructors who have years of experience helping musicians of all ages discover their true potential on a wide variety of music instruments and in singing. Students may enroll at any time throughout the year. Instruction available at all levels for half-hour, 45-minute, or one-hour lessons. Tuition for 10 weekly half-hour lessons will range from $210 to $250 ($21 to $25 per half-hour), depending on instructor. Lessons may begin at any time and are prorated for the remainder of the semester. To schedule private lessons, contact Judi Votypka, education account manager in the Music Office at x17 or Kris Morron, associate director of Music Education at x37. Registration Policies for Private Lessons Registration: Must be made prior to first lesson. Tuition and fees are due at that time. A registration form must be completed and signed by the person responsible for payment of lessons. Registration can be made by phone with payment by credit card. Lessons are prorated after the session begins. Cancellations/Absences: Contracting for private instruction obligates a student for the entire semester. All lessons must be paid for whether taken or missed. The Beck Center does not require instructors to make up student s missed lessons. In the event the instructor cancels a lesson or a class, a make-up will be offered or a fee adjustment will be made. Refunds: After the third week, no refunds will be issued for the remaining lessons for which the student has registered. beckcenter.org / /23/2012 page 15

Our staff emphasizes healthy singing and having a child take Voice Lessons at a young age can be detrimental to their development as singers. As an alternative, we offer Pre-teen Voice Classes each semester and Primary Choir during Fall and Winter/Spring. The Pre-teen Voice Class is offered for students 10 and 13 years. This class is the perfect setting for students who would like to take Voice Lessons but are not yet 12 years old. Please read more about this class in the Youth Music Classes section. If you are interested in classes that will help the young singer prepare for singing in theater productions, please refer to the Theater section of the web site. For theater students looking for private singing lessons, our staff of vocal instructors have years of theater experience and are here to help you reach your full potential. Contact the music office for more information. A NOTE FOR BEGINNERS When enrolling for music instruction, parents and students have the option of either group or private lessons. In private lessons, each student may learn at his or her own pace, and the teacher is able to focus completely on that individual student s strengths and weaknesses. A child may change from group to private lessons at any time. beckcenter.org / /23/2012 page 16

17 The Suzuki Method combines a music teaching method and a philosophy embracing the total development of the child: Character first and ability second. Prompted by a nurturing environment of parental involvement where students listen to high-quality recordings and use repetition of step by-step mastery of instrumental technique, musicality, memory and reading. Parents attend lessons and direct practice at home. Showcases All Music Department showcases are open to the public and held in the Music-Armory Building unless indicated otherwise. These showcases are scheduled September through June. No showcases are scheduled for the summer months. Kristopher Morron is associate director of Music Education. These field trips are available throughout the school year and during the summer for day camps and child care centers. Activities are also available for scout troupes and early childhood centers. Rachel E. Spence is the associate director of Outreach Education and can be reached by phone at x16 or by at rspence@beckcenter.org.
