2 8:10-9:40 Keynote: Welcome to the NEW NYS P-12 Learning Standards This will be a first-dive into the new state document. Standards overview will include: Philosophical Foundations and Lifelong Goals Artistic Literacy Structure of the NYS Arts Standards Artistic Processes, Anchor Standards, and Performance Indicators Coding of the NYS Arts Standards 9:50-11:20 On to the Classroom! How to Begin Using the Standards: This session will provide strategies to incorporate the new Standards into your instruction. This will be a hands on session. As such, attendees will need their own laptop to be able to access and utilize documents on the Internet. Timpani The pitched membranophone nightmare: Timpani - "The pitched membranophone nightmare". Ever wonder why your pedal won't stay where you put it - or it won't go all the way up? Do the lowest notes on your timpani sound like wet soggy Saran Wrap? Is the range of the drum completely messed up? Want to learn how to rig up makeshift tuners for your 90 year old drums? This workshop is for YOU! EL/MS Choral Choreography and Movement Part 1: This session will be broken into 3 parts. First we'll learn some basic movement ideas for the risers and how to tailor the movement to fit your group's particular needs. Then I will have a piece choreographed for you and we will go through that piece together so you can see a finished product. Then we will take a second piece and work together to choreograph the song. Hopefully this gives you practical experience so you feel confident to take it home to your own program! 11:20-12:10 Lunch

3 12:15-1:45 Practical Applications of the New Arts Standards: Band Reading Reading Session: This workshop will utilize 3-5 concert band works ranging in NYSSMA levels from 3-5. Jonathan Hunkins will discuss the relevant aspects of the pieces in terms of alignment with the new standards as well as rehearsal techniques and tips and tricks to making the ensemble sound the best it can (even with limited instrumentation). All participants should be bring a couple (2) horns (primary and secondary) with them to help cover parts as need be during this reading session. A variety of styles will be incorporated throughout the workshop. Practical Applications of the New Arts Standards: Choral Reading This session with Tammy Madeja will include reading through a number of level 4-5 choral octavos with suggestions for a taught curriculum map (TCM) relating to the characteristics of each piece that align with the new state arts standards. We will review the coding system for the new music standards and use it to develop a unit plan for one of the pieces. Participants will leave with a packet of music. EL/MS Choral Choreography and Movement Part 2 Here is where we'll get some work done for you! Please bring a piece you would like to choreograph for a future performance (even one you are prepping for this concert season!) and we will choreograph as many as possible in the time available. Select any type of piece--fast, slow, sacred, secular--just be a little familiar with it your self to help us become a little familiar more quickly! If you have any questions about what to bring, me at ellisona@phcs.neric.org and I'll get back to you as soon as I am able. 2:00-3:00 Advocacy: Everything you were wanting to know, but afraid to ask In this session, Lori Orestano-James will pack in everything you need to know regarding advocacy for your music program. Get a handle on ESSA and other websites, information and navigational tools so you can explain to your administration. Feel free to bring your own laptop, or device to follow along.

4 Meet our Presenters: Frederic A. Weingarten earned his BM degree (with Performance Certificate) from Crane School of Music; MM from Ithaca College; and administrative certification from Brockport College. After 34 years in public school education, Mr. Weingarten retired from the Rush-Henrietta Central School District, where he served as the Director of Music and Visual Arts. He supervises student teachers from Ithaca College, and in the past has worked with student teachers from Nazareth College and SUNY Fredonia. In 2017, he was a member of the Learning Standards for the Arts Revision Committee in Music, adapting the National Core Arts Standards for New York State. Mr. Weingarten has participated in various activities related to arts education, and currently serves as Chairman for the NYSSMA Curriculum Committee. He is a NYSSMA Certified All-State percussion adjudicator; on the Board of Directors for the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; and has served as Co-Chair of the Rochester Area Council of Administrators of Music Education (RACAME), and President of the Board for Park Avenue Dance. He has been recognized for his contributions to music education, having been honored by the Monroe County School Music Association as the recipient of the Richard H. Snook Award for significant contributions to music education (2007); recipient of the Outstanding Music Educator s Award in the Special Recognition Category, given by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (1998); awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award for participation in the Education and Outreach Committee of the RPO (2001); and received the Distinguished Service Award from NYSSMA (2013). He has presided at conferences regarding arts advocacy and the restructuring of school curricula according to state and national standards. He is a life long resident of the greater Rochester area, and enjoys bicycling, photography and performing in the Eastman Community School Music Educators Wind Ensemble. Lori Orestano-James is the director of fine and performing arts at Wappingers Central School District. She is also the NYSSMA Advocacy chair.

5 Meet our Presenters: Jonathan Hunkins is currently the Music Department Chairman and Director of Bands at the Massena Central High School where his responsibilities include the high school concert band, marching band, jazz ensemble, pep band, percussion ensemble and music theory. A 1992 graduate of Ithaca College, Mr. Hunkins earned a B.M. degree with high honors double majoring in Music Education and Music Performance with a percussion concentration. Mr. Hunkins later completed his M.S. degree with honors in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, SUNY at Potsdam, NY in Mr. Hunkins frequently performs throughout the North Country as a percussionist including such performing groups as the Orchestra of Northern NY, Northern Symphonic Winds and the Norwood Brass Fireman since Mr. Hunkins has also guest conducted around NYS and the St. Lawrence Counties High School and Junior High All-County Concert Bands as well as the St. Lawrence Valley Leagues Jazz Ensemble and Concert Bands. He is an active NYSSMA and NYSBDA member currently serving as the NYSSMA Zone 5 Representative. Mr. Hunkins also currently serves as the St. Lawrence County Music Educator s Association secretary. Mr. Hunkins is also an active Board of Education member serving as Vice President of the BOE for the Norwood-Norfolk Central School District as well as sitting on the board for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series. Mr. Hunkins was an original member of the The Conrad Story Blues Band playing drums as well as serving as the recording engineer and producer for their recording projects. He currently performs with various other groups throughout the North Country including The Debt and Plan B. Andrea Ellison is a general and vocal music educator working with all ages of students from prekindergarten to senior high at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School, located near the Adirondacks. Her teaching responsibilities include general music classes for grades pre-k through sixth, five choral ensembles, various high school electives and direction of the school theater program. Mrs. Ellison received her Bachelor's of Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and her Master's of Science in Education in Elementary Education from the same institution. She is currently in the dissertation phase of a Doctorate in Music Education through Boston University. Mrs. Ellison resides in Potsdam, NY with her husband, Sean, and her four children, Michael, Julia, Madeleine and Jonathan. Tammara Madeja currently serves as the Coordinator of Music Education Field Experience at The Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. Ms. Madeja retired from Potsdam Central Schools in 2017 after 30 years of teaching choral and general music where the PCS choral ensembles under her direction received consistently high honors including invitations to perform for the New York chapter of the American Choral Director s Association and Level 6 Gold with Distinction ratings from the New York State School Music Association. Ms. Madeja served as the All-State Chorus Chairperson for the New York State School Music Association from She was the Zone 5 representative to NYSSMA from , NYSSMA voice chair from and is a certified All-State vocal solo adjudicator. Mrs. Madeja is active as a guest conductor and has presented clinics at regional and state music conferences. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
