4 Chamber Choir & Concert Choir October 14, 2017 Program Notes Ralph Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs Duration: 20 minutes The British 20th-century composer Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote the Five Mystical Songs for baritone solo, chorus, and orchestra between 1906 and He set religious texts by the English poet George Herbert ( ) that deal with the resurrection of Jesus and the relationship of God and the human soul. Vaughan Williams exploits the drama of the text by juxtaposing grandiose musical moments for choir, soloist and piano with intimate moments for soloist and piano alone. The relationship between the choir and the soloist shifts from call and answer, to the choir quoting chant as the soloist sings, and finally ending with choir alone in the bombastic Antiphon. Franz Joseph Haydn Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, Hob. XXII:7 Duration: 15 minutes The Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo is also known as the Kleineorgelmesse (Little Organ Mass) due to the inclusion of the positiv organ (a small organ without pedals used as a continuo instrument in the Baroque period) featured predominantly in the Benedictus movement and probably played by the composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, himself when the piece was first written around Missa brevis refers to a popular form of mass settings in the Classical period that achieved a shortened length by setting different lines of the text simultaneously across the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass vocal lines. By doing this, long texts such as the Gloria and the Credo could be quickly sung, particularly when set at quick tempi using short, syllabic not values. The mass is named after St. John of God ( ), a Portuguese monk and the patron saint of the Barmherzinger Brüder who ran a hospital in Vienna at which Haydn played the organ in his early years. Ralph Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music Duration: 14 minutes Vaughan Williams composed the Serenade to Music for 16 soloists and orchestra in It is dedicated to Sir Henry Wood on the occasion of his Jubilee, in grateful recognition of his services to music. The work is nowadays most often performed by choir and soloists, the latter filling in various musical phrases between periodic tutti moments. The words are taken from Act V, Scene I of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare and have the essence of a true serenade, extolling Music s virtue, charm, power, and beauty.

5 Biographies Chamber Choir & Concert Choir October 14, 2017 Eric Esparza is the Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Area Coordinator at DePaul University, where he conducts the DePaul Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and teaches courses in Choral Music. Dr. Esparza is also the Artistic Director of Windy City Performing Arts. Previously, he served on the music faculty of Sam Houston State University School as conductor of the Concert Choir, and teacher of voice, diction, and music theory. Dr. Esparza was also the Founder, Artistic Director, and Conductor of International Voices Houston, Artistic Director of the United Nations Association International Choir, and Director of Ministries at St. Mark s United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, he holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he studied with Dr. Joyce Farwell and Maestro Thomas Jaber. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Arts Administration from Florida State University where he was a University Fellow and served as Assistant Conductor of the Florida State University Opera. Dr. Esparza earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from Boston University, where he studied with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. He remains active internationally as a singer, conductor, and music editor.
