2 Who we are... Pioneer Center Youth Programs (PCYP) is the educational outreach division of the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, northern Nevada s premier performing arts facility. Our programs are available to all public libraries and elementary schools throughout northwestern Nevada. About our programs PCYP performances are designed to educate, entertain, and enlighten elementary-age children through interactive performing arts presentations. School programs are set up in two back-to-back assemblies: a 30-minute assembly for primary grades and a 40-minute assembly for intermediate grades. Public library performances run 60 minutes in length. At the end of the performances, we ask that teachers, librarians, parents, and children complete an evaluation form. This form is used as a tool for future programming and for grant funding consideration. Affordable prices The cost of for schools and libraries in the immediate Reno-Sparks area is $200. 3 Artist Roster Brüka s Theatre for Children Brüka Theatre proudly presents an original modern adaptation of the classic Grimm s tale of "The Frog Prince. "The Frog Prince is a play about understanding change, reversibility and life s magic. Brüka brings different styles of theatre and participation into the performances so that audiences are exposed to a deeper understanding of the story and theatrical presentations. Brüka Theatre has been presenting live theatre in our community for 25 years. This touring production features professional actors bringing the story to life with a small set of props and costumes. This live theatre performance incorporates physical theatrics, improvisation, and audience interaction. Children are invited to participate in the creation of each performance, ensuring that every show is unique. Funny and insightful, this theatre troupe features top-notch performers and writers who consistently involve young people in learning and participating in theatre and related arts. March through June 2018 Dog Pound Crew Touring Artists Rooted in classic b-boying and steeped in contemporary dance culture, the young dancers of Dog Pound mix acrobatic moves with precise choreography and free-styling to excite all-ages audiences. Each Dog Pound performance tells a captivating story through dance moves and audience interaction. Since 2008, their performances have received rave reviews. The ensemble or selected members have performed at Sasquatch Music Festival, the WNBA All Star game, Seattle Theatre Group dance festivals, MTV s video music awards, and in Amy O Neals show Opposing Forces. Dog Pound s philosophy of each one, teach one drives them to understand and connect with youth, giving their best to the community through b-boy workshops/classes and school assembly programs. 4 Artist Roster Erika Paul Trio You don't want to miss the opportunity to have this jazzy trio visit your school or library! Music styles from more than a century of authentic American jazz are performed by this trio as they invite young audiences to engage in interactive participation. New Orleans and Ragtime beginnings through modern instrumental and vocal jazz styles written by some of history's most innovative jazz artists like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Vince Guaraldi are part of this trio's impressive jazz repertoire. Educator, pianist and singer Erika Paul leads this group together with David Aller on electro-acoustic upright bass and Dave Riegert on drums and percussion. Career musician, singer/songwriter, and certified private music instructor Erika Paul weaves interactive age -appropriate activities and simple songwriting skills to inspire spontaneity, creativity, and "all that jazz." Original songs from Erika's Grammy-nominated, award-winning children's interactive jazz CD, "Scat's My Bag," are also included in the program, that share personal stories of young storybook characters who follow the call of jazz and music education as a lifetime passion. September 2017 through June 2018 In-Tune Tales Exploring the rich tradition of the spoken word combined with music and song, In-Tune Tales performances encourage children to develop their verbal, interactive, and attention skills to use their imaginations and their minds. This talented and engaging trio performs songs and spoken word stories along with an organically-created soundtrack using upright bass, guitar, violin, and vocals. Traditional folk tales from a variety of world cultures and modern classics by Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss are all brought to life with music, song, lyrics, and musical sound effects to create Metaphors for Life. This warm, humorous performance focuses on storytelling as a folk art, with live musical accompaniment all performed in the moment. Group leader and lifelong musician Scot Marshall has worked as an entertainer since the age of 15. He learned the rich art of storytelling from his grandmother, who traveled with Chautauqua from 1916 to Scot is joined by his son Graham Marshall on violin and career musician Ron Savage on piano. 5 In-Tune Tales Presents The Grinch Bring the magic of the holiday season to life with spoken word storytelling, music, and song! In this special program, the In-Tune Tales trio performs classic holiday stories and songs in an acoustic setting with upright bass, violin, guitar, and vocals. The centerpiece of the holiday program is the beloved Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas, told in its entirety with spoken word, songs, and musical sound effects. This program also features several classic holiday songs performed in jazz, pop, and bluegrass styles and a sing-along for Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Artist Roster Larry Wilson Local Artist Direct from TV, magician Larry Wilson returns once again with an entirely new program of mind-blowing magic illustrating the scientific principles that make his illusions possible. His popularity in northern Nevada schools has compelled Larry to create a completely new array of amazing demonstrations of unbelievable magic which can always be explained by science. Larry performs magic tricks using student volunteers in direct, hands-on learning applications. As astounding as these tricks may be, the secrets behind them are often more incredible. Under Larry s master tutelage, the most bewildering magic will be broken down into easy-to follow steps that students can re-create at home with common household items like pencils, rubber bands, paper clips, and string. The accompanying curriculum guide Larry has compiled for educators provides a wealth of practical lessons in magic and history, magic and art, magic and science, magic and literature, and even magic and mathematics. 6 Artist Roster Maya Soleil Traditions Touring Artists Maya Soleil Traditions presents traditional African song and dance with performers from the countries of Zambia and Ghana. Authentic ethnic rhythms, vocals, and dancing captivate audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Audience members learn about the use of songs in African cultural ceremonies, their ethnic musical instruments, and colorful costumes. They also get to try call-and-response songs in an African language and learn about African dance steps; or just listen and enjoy charming stories behind songs arising from the rich culture of the African continent. The diversity of songs from South-Central and West Africa illustrates differences as well as similarities of musical culture throughout the continent. Members of Maya Soleil Traditions have toured the world, performing and recording with some of the greats in African music and dance. Petroglyph The Evolution of Music Pete Fairley of MeadowRock Percussion joins David Blonski of Timeless Productions in this exploration of music from multiple cultures and historical eras. As students experience the sounds of instruments ranging from the didgeridoo and tabla drums to guitar loops and electronic percussion, Pete and David weave a narrative linking the ancient with the modern. Based on the premise that music is a powerful form of communication used by cultures across the globe for thousands of years, they share stories and perform songs that demonstrate a wide variety of melodic and percussion instruments. Opportunities for student participation occur throughout the program, and teachers will find they can integrate the experience into lessons in social studies, math, and science as well as music. 8 Program Order Form your order to When scheduling your programs, please remember: For locations in the immediate Reno-Sparks vicinity, the cost of the programs is $200. For locations outside the Reno-Sparks area, the cost is $250. An invoice will be generated after your booking request is confirmed. Regular booking dates are SEPTEMBER 2017 through JUNE Some artists are available only certain dates. Check the Artist Availability sheet before requesting an artist. Take into consideration holidays, vacations, school testing dates, and any other applicable scheduling conflicts. Please make sure you mark the CONFIRMED booking date and time on your master calendar. Each school booking consists of two back-to-back programs: 30 minutes for primary grades and 40 minutes for intermediate grades. Please schedule approximately 15 minutes between these back-to-back programs. An example for a morning booking would be: 9:30am for primary and 10:15am for intermediate. An example for an afternoon booking would be: 1:30pm for primary and 2:15pm for intermediate. Each public library booking consists of one 60 minute program. Library bookings are available in the morning, afternoon, or evening, seven days a week. Artists usually have their own equipment and only need to schedule set-up/break-down time. Artists will be in direct contact with you to arrange these times, as well as explain any special requirements they may have. Our programs are supported by several grants. In order that we continue to receive grant monies, we are required to evaluate our programs. Evaluation forms will be provided. We appreciate you mailing these forms back to the Pioneer Center soon after the program is completed.
