1 2 Editor s Note Henry Purcell was one of the greatest English composers of all time. A musical genius who lived in the Baroque era, he served as organist of Westminster Abbey from 1679 until his death. His greatness can be seen in the large number and variety of works of the highest quality which he wrote during his short life of only 36 years. Besides many odes and welcome songs for chorus and orchestra, cantatas, songs, catches, anthems, services, fancies, chamber sonatas and keyboard works, he wrote incidental music for 49 plays and an opera. Purcell lived during the monarchies of Charles II and James II, for whom he wrote welcome songs and odes. The practice of honoring members of the royal family with music was established during the reign of Charles II. And Rejoice! is found in Welcome, Welcome, Glorious Morn of 1691, one of six birthday odes that Purcell wrote for Queen Mary. The source for this edition is Henry Purcell, Complete Works, Volume 11, published by the Purcell Society in London (1902). Purcell scored this chorus for tenor soloist and S.A.T.B. voices with an accompaniment of trumpets, oboes, strings and continuo. This arrangement for S.S.A. voices features a new keyboard accompaniment which includes an adaptation of the original continuo part. Modern clefs, tempo and dynamic indications, and a new text have also been added by the editor. Additionally, the editor has added an introduction and the return of the opening choral refrain, which begins at measure 47. An arrangement of this chorus for S.A.B. voices (21690) is also available. and Rejoice! should be performed very rhythmically while emphasizing the two pulsations in each measure. The singers should especially strive for clear textual declaration when sounding the independent melodic lines in the contrapuntal section. The normally stressed syllables and words should be heard by the listener as the various musical ideas are contrasted with the suggested dynamic changes.
