1 Assembling the Orchestra WOODWINDS BRASS PERCUSSION STRINGS 2010 / 2011 Education Concerts & In- School Ensembles

2 Assembling the Orchestra BRASS Education Concerts April 6 & April 7, 2011 Many students study the instruments of the orchestra or even attend concerts, but their understanding of classical music and why musicians choose to play in a symphony orchestra is probably still limited. As a result they have trouble relating to classical concerts. In Assembling the Orchestra the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will demystify the orchestral experience by taking a lively, in depth, look at each instrument family and its unique qualities. Students will explore how each family of instruments contributes to the sound of a full symphony orchestra and why the musicians find it so exciting to play their instruments. The concert will culminate with a boisterous, entertaining performance of Russell Peck s Thrill of the Orchestra. The concerts will be held on Wednesday, April 6 and Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 9:45 and 11:30am at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Arts & Cultural Center, Providence. To register your students, please use the form on page 6. You may also register by calling Rebecca Tingleff, Community Partnerships Coordinator, at We will post curriculum guides with activities and lesson plans to prepare students for the performance on the Philharmonic website in February ( To Book an Ensemble Contact Rebecca Tingleff at or rtingleff@riphil.org Please consider the following when selecting an ensemble: Your Budget Age Range & Number of Students Types of Ensembles & Activities you would like Desired Curriculum Connection, if any Potential Dates Our ensembles are organized by group type: Woodwinds, Strings, Brass, Jazz, World Music, Folk and Music & Science. Pricing All fees listed in this brochure are for two 45-minute performances unless otherwise indicated. Additional performances may be added. Any school exceeding a 50-mile travel radius will be charged an additional $100 for travel costs. Availability & Curriculum Connections The availability of some ensembles is limited. When calling to book an ensemble, please try to give a minimum of four weeks notice and a first and second choice of dates. All ensembles address some or all of the national music standards, and many connect music to other classroom curriculums. To help educators identify which standard(s) are addressed, each ensemble is marked accordingly: (A) Art, (E) English Language arts, (So) Social Studies, (Sc) Science, (M) Math, (H) History. In-School Ensembles and Education Concerts are designed to help students work toward the Rhode Island Fine Arts Proficiency graduation requirement in music in the responding category. For more information about the Fine Arts Proficiency graduation requirements visit riartslearning.net. The Rhode Island Philharmonic strives to provide enhanced educational opportunities for your students that are meant to supplement your own music program. In addition to In-School Ensembles, we are available to work with you to design unique residencies and workshops that connect music to your classroom curriculum. 3 Woodwinds Pipes: Melody and Mystery Grades: 1-6 Cost: $550 Recorders and Storyteller A demonstration of ancient pipes the family of recorders, a variety of crumhorns and the chalumeau leads to storytelling. During a costumed poetic recitation of Robert Browning s Pied Piper of Hamlin evocative pipe playing identifies the characters and the action of the poem. Just as the Pied Piper used music to hypnotize a plague of rats and then all the children of Hamlin, this presentation employs music and poetry to instruct and entertain with engaging effect. (E) Eyes That Speak Grades: K-8 Cost: $625 Quartet Recorders and Voices This in-school program explores the inspiration that animals have given composers through the ages using recorders and voices. The musicians play Renaissance wind instruments that introduce the family of recorders, the family of crumhorns and the chalumeau. The text of In Defense of Animals from the movie Dr. Doolittle emphasizes that message and punctuates the program.
