1 VPA Requirements for Band Auditions for Students will audition before a panel of directors, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Components 2 prepared selections Selection 1 - Students will prepare and perform a selection that is lyrical Selection 2 - Students will prepare and perform a selection of contrasting style During both selection performances, each performer will be judged on Tone, Musicality and Technique. Musical Knowledge Assessment Students will be take a short Music Rudiment Test o Examples: Identifying basic music symbols: note names, notes lengths, rests, time signatures, clefs, repeats, dynamics, and styles Every student interested in attending I.M. Terrell VPA will participate in a 15- minute interview o The Interview Panel will ask each student a series of questions and will give each student the opportunity to ask questions and to share a bit about themselves Please call Dick Clardy, Director of Instrumental Music, at or at dick.clardy@fwisd.org to schedule your audition for January 12 or 13, 2018.

2 VPA Requirements for Choral Music Auditions for Students will audition before a panel of directors, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Component (2 memorized selections) Students will perform a solo chosen from the UIL Prescribed Solo & Ensemble Music List Student will perform a choice piece showcasing vocal ability and performance style During the performance, each singer will be judged on Vocal Quality, Musicality and Stage Presence. If an accompanist is needed, please contact our office and be sure to provide music scores. Musical Knowledge Assessment Students will be assessed on the following skills and areas of knowledge: o Pitch Matching o Rhythm Identity o Music Theory/ Symbol Recognition o Sight Reading exercise comparable to the Texas TMEA All State Process Every student interested in the I M Terrell VPA will participate in a 15-minute interview. o The Interview Panel will ask each student a series of questions and will give each student the opportunity to ask questions and to share a bit about themselves. 4 VPA Requirements for Dance Auditions for Students will audition before a panel of teachers, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Components Students will perform a combination of routines taught by the Dance Teacher or designee Auditions will use consistent material for all sessions The routine may consist of the following: o 3-5 minutes of warm-up which may include jogging, crunches, planks and push-ups o Ballet combination that may include pirouettes, développés, port de bras, sautés, and tendus o Jazz combination which may include chassés, jazz walks, ball changes, pas de bourrées, pivot turns and fan rolls o Other appropriate dance combinations as determined by the person(s) leading the audition During each performance, each candidate will be judged on proper technique, adaptability, potential, the ability to learn choreography quickly, and the ability to be redirected Dress/Attire Students should be dressed in appropriate dance attire A leotard and tights are preferred for girls, but leggings and a form fitting shirt are acceptable Black tights or leggings with a solid shirt are preferred for boys, but joggers are also acceptable Every student interested in the I M Terrell VPA will participate in a 15-minute interview. o The Interview Panel will ask each student a series of questions and will give each student the opportunity to ask questions and to share a bit about themselves. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Components 2 prepared selections of contrasting styles Selection 1 - Students will prepare and perform a selection that is lyrical Selection 2 - Students will prepare and perform a selection of contrasting style During both selection performances, each performer will be judged on Tone, Accuracy, Rhythm/Bowing, Musicality and Technique Musical Knowledge Assessment Students will be take a short Music Rudiment Test o Examples: identifying basic music symbols such as note names, notes lengths, rests, time signatures, clefs, repeats, dynamics, and styles Every student interested in the I.M. 6 VPA Requirements for Piano Auditions for Students will audition before a panel of directors, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Components Students will prepare and perform two contrasting pieces o Both prepared pieces should total no more than five minutes o If the student chooses an extended, or multi-movement work, they may choose to play an excerpt from the piece that best showcases their talents and abilities o Playing from memory is not mandatory o Pop selections are not appropriate Students will prepare and perform the following scales with both hands together o Major keys - Students will be asked to play one of the following scales: C, G, D, A, E, B o Major keys - Students will choose to play one of the following scales: B, E, A, D, G o Minor scale - Students will be asked to play the a minor scale in all three forms (natural, harmonic, melodic) *Scales are to be performed with two hands together, two octaves, ascending and descending. Performance need not to be fast, but must be fluent and demonstrate knowledge and confidence. Fingering must conform to standard practice. Students will sight-read a simple two-part piece in C Major Musical Knowledge Assessment Students will be take a brief music theory test. Content will include the following: o Identification and notation of notes, rhythms, and rests, key signature identification, chord structures, and basic music symbols (i.e. time signature, dynamics, & tempo markings) Every student interested in attending I.M. 7 VPA Requirements for Theatre Auditions for Students will audition before a panel of teachers, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same audition procedures listed below. Performance Components Students will perform two contrasting memorized monologues chosen from a source of generally accepted, appropriate and readily available websites for monologues and scenes, and/or published material such as books of monologues o One of the monologues must be dramatic and one monologue must be comedic o Each monologue should be between 1-2 minutes in length o Examples of published books containing monologues and websites will be made available A copy of the monologues used must be made available to the judging panel prior to the audition Monologues should be language, situation and age appropriate Do not come in costume; it is ok to wear clothing to suggest the character Monologues should be contemporary but not ones that are over used. Do not use monologues from a TV series. Do not write your own monologues. Selection 2 - Cold Reading Duet Scenes (to be provided at the audition) During each performance, each candidate will be judged on memorization, understanding of the story, character, scene, ability to improve as needed, take direction, the ability to be re-directed and stage presence. 8 VPA Requirements for Visual Arts for Students will bring their Art Portfolio to be reviewed by a panel of teachers, administrators and a community partner/professional educator. Each student will follow the same procedures listed below. What is the Art Portfolio? The High School Art Portfolio needs to demonstrate a more advanced level of artwork. The artwork should show a variety of techniques and processes, as well as demonstrate ability through different forms of media. The works of art may be from classwork or outside of class. Portfolio Requirements: 8 to 12 works of art in at least 4 different media forms demonstrating a variety of media o i.e. not ALL crafts, photography, etc. A strong emphasis on drawing will be needed to demonstrate foundational ability in drawing skills See the examples below of different forms of art media: Ceramic Collage Computer Technology Crafts Drawing (B&W and/or Color) o From observation (figurative to still life) must be included Graphic Design Glass Art Jewelry (Craft, Glass, Bead, Fabricated, Cast) Painting Perspective Photography (B&W, Color, Multiple Image, Panoramic) Printmaking Within these categories, students should demonstrate the use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in their compositions. Creative approaches and individual problem solving is a given. (No cartooning, gang symbols, tattoo designs, or any copy work whatsoever will be accepted, as well as white-out or folded artwork). The portfolio COULD have the following, according to the needs and motivation of the art students: (Emphasis on high quality and excellence of execution of assignment/artwork.) Breadth: Classroom assignments regarding Elements of Art and Principles of Design Concentration: The student s portfolio may demonstrate a concentration or theme; (i.e. self-portraits, landscapes, hands, animals, etc.) Quality: High Quality artwork is most important Student Interview: Every student interested in the I.M. Terrell VPA will participate in a 15-minute interview o The Interview Panel will ask each student a series of questions and will give each student the opportunity to ask questions and to share a bit about themselves Please call Beverly Fletcher, Director of Visual Arts, at or at beverly.fletcher@fwisd.org to schedule your Portfolio Review for January 12 or 13, Note: Students can be inspired by past artists or published artwork, but only as a point of reference. Connecting with a published artist s work is one thing; direct copying is another. The latter is called plagiarism. Students may use an image as a point of departure, and develop the idea individually and creatively. Again, a theme or concentration is not dramatically important at the entry level. Ability to use art materials and understanding of composition will be noted. Skill level, a grasp of techniques and application, originality and creativity are what make a good portfolio.
