1 2 Editor s Note Jean Baptiste Lully ( ) was a leading musician in France during the Baroque era and the ounder o French opera. Born in Florence, Italy, Lully was taken to Paris early in lie. His musical talents were soon developed, and he became a successul dancer, violinist, and cooser. Because o his exceptional musical ability and tremendous ambition, Lully became quite powerul in the musical venues o Paris, coosing music or ballets and theatrical productions, as well as conducting orchestras and choral presentations. He eventually coosed and conducted in the court o Louis XIV. It was during the 1660s that Lully developed a new kind o ballet in collaboration with the great playwright Molière. This type o ballet, called the comédieballet, included the use o spoken comedy in addition to dances, airs, and choruses. Dì (which means good day ) was originally perormed at the beginning o the Second Interlude o the comédieballet Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. Coosed in 1669 and irst presented at the Palais Royal, this chorus was originally perormed by two Italian musicians singing good tidings to Mr. Pourceaugnac in an attet to heal him o his socalled illness. This arrangement is based on an original score published by André Danican Philidor at Versailles between 1700 and Originally set or tenor and bass soloists with an instrumental continuo accoaniment in the key o G major, this arrangement is or twopart voices with keyboard and an optional hand drum accoaniment. English words have been added by the editor, as well as a ourmeasure introduction, teo and dynamic indications, and staccato articulation markings. This work should be perormed very lightly and rhythmically. Perormers should ehasize the normally stressed syllables o the Italian words, indicated with accent marks below. Although a perormance o this piece would be quite acceptable with the minimal accoaniment provided here, the use o additional instruments, such as recorders, lutes, or strings, would also be quite eective or the enhancement or support o the vocal parts.
