1 Name Date After WW I ended, life improved. Factories started producing more products at a faster pace. Many Americans worked in factories and this allowed them to buy things. The American economy was booming. This period is called the Roaring Twenties.

2 Improved Standard of Living The U.S. became the richest country in the world. Soldiers went back to work. Many consumer goods such as cars, radios, cosmetics, and household appliances were more readily available to working-class people in the early 1900s. This increased the demand for workers and for better products to be produced. Mass production making large numbers of goods that are exactly alike

3 Automobiles Henry Ford: An entrepreneur and inventor Founded Ford Motor Company Created the assembly line o Assembly Line: workers stand in one place and put parts together on a moving belt Built the Model T, a car that was sturdy, safe, and affordable for most people (mass produced) Cost under $500 Radios Mass production made radios common and affordable. Radio was live and could be heard in homes. Why was the radio important? People could now listen to sports programs, comedies, dramas, music, and commercials on the radio!

4 Movies Mass media, communication to large audiences became popular in the early 1900 s. o People went to see movies in theaters called nickelodeons because the cost was one 5 cents. Movies without sound: silent movies Movies with sound: talkies o 1 st full length movie with sound, The Jazz Singer, was made. Prohibition During the 1920 s, people believed that some people abused and spent their money on alcohol instead of on their families o They called for prohibition a complete ban on the sale of alcohol o 18 th Amendment was passed (1919): outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the U.S. Disadvantages of Prohibition: 1. Criminals known as bootleggers brought alcohol from other countries or made their own illegally. 2. Bootleggers sold alcohol illegally in speakeasies 3. Gangsters, crime, and violence rose 21st Amendment was passed (1933): an end to Prohibition and the 18th Amendment

5 The Jazz Age Jazz music was created on slave plantations. After slavery, it lived on in New Orleans Famous Jazz artists Louis Armstrong Duke Ellington Bessie Smith Jazz trumpeter and singer Jazz music improvises: makes up the song on the spot a famous blues singer By the 1920 s, African Americans began to thrive in some parts of the U.S. for the first time o Many became educated and had good jobs o In Harlem, New York, o African American culture blossomed Music, dance, politics, literature, and art o Langston Hughes was one of the best-known Harlem Renaissance writers. His poems portrayed African Americans in a proud and hopeful light.
