The Frost Preparatory Program offers music instruction for children of all ages. Our comprehensive program will provide a clear musical path for your child from birth to high school graduation! Whether you want to bond with your toddler in Little Canes music class or explore jazz improvisation, the Frost Preparatory Program has you covered.

Little Canes Music Ages 0-5 years NEWBORN Ages 0-6 months LITTLE CANES LEVEL III Ages years The first months are a perfect time to develop your child s natural musical ability. This class will show parents how to support musical development while bonding with their new baby. Parents will engage in sensory activities appropriate for our youngest musicians! Classes are 30 minutes in length. Building on the skills gained in Little Canes levels I and II, students will further their harmonic and rhythmic abilities through song and movement. Objectives include familiarizing students with all instrument families, and preparing them to read music. Classes are 40 minutes in length. LITTLE CANES LEVEL I Ages 6-15 months This class provides a fun and relaxed environment for parents and children to explore music, movement, and play. Children will be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles and genres that will build a foundation for music appreciation and musicianship. We will use ageappropriate manipulatives such as drums, scarves, and rhythm instruments to experience music through movement activities and playing instruments. This class will provide a unique opportunity for parents and children to begin their musical journey together. Classes are 30 minutes in length. LITTLE CANES LEVEL II 15 months years This class will provide an opportunity for children to explore a wide variety of musical styles such as classical, jazz, folk, children's classics, music from around the world, and contemporary genres. Children will learn melodic and rhythmic skills through teacher-led circle songs, movement activities, and structured / free play on a wide variety of instruments. Classes are 35 minutes in length. FAMILY MUSIC MAKERS Ages 0-4 years This class is a mixed level class where children and caregivers experience a variety of musical styles and movement activities while using manipulatives such as the parachute, rhythm instruments, scarves, and more. Classes are 35 minutes in length. LITTLE CANES PIANO Ages 4-5 years Students will learn to play the keyboard. Objectives include improving our listening and ear training, learning the piano keys, staff notation, finger numbers and hand position. Short practice sessions at home with a parent and daily listening to the Spotify list are an integral part of this class. Parents/caregivers are required to attend each class with their child. Classes are 45 minutes.

Suzuki Ages 3 & up The Suzuki philosophy believes that every child can learn to play and instrument, just as they learn to speak their native language. Little Canes -Introduction to Suzuki Ages: 3-5 years If you are interested in starting your child on an instrument at a young age, and curious about how the Suzuki method works, and are not yet sure what instrument would be a good fit for your child, this class is for you. Little Canes Introduction to Suzuki will introduce the basic fundamental skills needed to play the violin, cello, or piano through the Suzuki method. Suzuki violin, cello, and piano instructors will visit the class several times throughout the semester so your child has a chance to decide which instrument they would like to play. Parents are required to attend each class with their child. Classes are 45 minutes. Pre Twinkle Violin Eligible to begin at age 4 (addition of 20 minute semi private or 30 minute private lesson is strongly encouraged) Students will build on the skills learned in the Introduction to Suzuki but will now be focused on the violin position, bow hold, posture, pizzicato and rhythm patterns on open strings. Short practice sessions at home with a parent and daily listening to the Suzuki violin recordings are an integral part of this class. Once students are comfortable playing with their left hand and have completed Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, they will be eligible for the Suzuki Violin Level I Class. Parents are required to attend each class with their child. Classes are 45 minutes. Pre Twinkle Cello Eligible to begin at age 4 (addition of 20 minute semi private or 30 minute private lesson is strongly encouraged) Students will build on the skills learned in the Introduction to Suzuki but will now be focused on the cello position, bow hold, posture, pizzicato and rhythm patterns on open strings. Short practice sessions at home with a parent and daily listening to the Suzuki cello recordings are an integral part of this class. Once students are comfortable playing with their left hand and have completed Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, they will be eligible for the Suzuki cello Level I Class. Parents are required to attend each class with their child. Classes are 45 minutes.

+ Frost Preparatory Program Ages 5 & up Lessons are the foundation of our curriculum and the starting point for musical study. Students can choose between private or group settings. In addition, students will take Musicianship classes to reinforce concepts learned in their once-weekly lesson. All of our classes prepare students for additional outside performance and audition opportunities, such as those offered by the National Federation of Music Clubs, the National Piano Guild, and more. Group Piano Classes Private Lessons Beginning students taking Group Lessons receive many benefits, including frequent performance opportunities, teamwork, ensemble playing and motivation. It is also proven that young students taking group classes have a higher retention rate. Students with previous piano experience must audition in order to be placed in the correct group class. Group lessons are 60 minutes, and include technique work, repertoire (solo and ensemble), informal performance opportunities, and music games and technology. Classes are no larger than five students, and take place in the state of the art Weeks Technology Center where students are provided with individual Clavinova electric pianos and headphones. Students should have their own keyboard or piano for home practice. You do not need to bring the keyboard to class. Private Lessons are offered for the following: piano, guitar, percussion, strings, woodwinds, brass, and composition. All private lessons are scheduled individually with the instructor. New students must set up an audition so they can be matched with the appropriate teacher. For information about teacher placement or to set up an audition please contact our office at Lessons take place on the Coral Gables campus. 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons are available.

+ CLASSES Classes are essential to developing a well-rounded musician and reinforcing concepts learned during the weekly lessons. All students are encouraged to take Musicianship. MUSICIANSHIP This class supplements weekly lessons. Specifically, students learn the building blocks of music, including note reading, rhythm reading, and ear training. Students will also enjoy a high energy rotating selection of rhythm, movement, and jazz that will get them up out of their seats and learning music in a whole new way with their friends! Adding a second class to your child s weekly lesson greatly enhances their progress and retention. Additionally, if they are taking private lessons, this is a great way for them to add social aspect to their lessons. 1st and 2nd Year Level: These classes introduce students to the basic concepts of music, such as note naming, rhythm, ear training, eurhythmics, and signs and terms, in a fun and interactive way. Elementary Level: This course is taken upon completion of 1st and 2nd year classes. It is designed to continue to build upon the concepts learned in beginning musicianship with a strong emphasis on reading. Students learn to identify these concepts within the context of pieces. Further ear training develops the student's musicality and expression. Intermediate Level: These courses are taken upon completion of the Elementary classes. Here, the student begins to explore more advanced topics, such as key signatures, chord identification, inversions and cadences. Intermediate level ear training will include dictations, sight singing, and more. Advanced Level: Equipped with a thorough understanding of the concepts of all of the previous levels, students are able to analyze and understand a musical score. This course prepares students for college level music study at a university or conservatory.

Movement & Rhythm Enhance your musical experience with these dynamic and engaging add ons! MUSICAL THEATRE: The theatre program is formulated for all levels and all interests from 5 to 18 combining songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The program includes improvisation, script work, and character development as well as speech and voice for the actor. SONG WRITING: Immerse yourself in the art of songwriting. Hone your craft in song forms, melodies, the interaction and use of rhythm and harmony, lyric writing, and the latest technological advances. This course is designed to provide you with an opportunity to perform your songs and receive feedback from faculty and peers. MOVEMENT FOR MUSICIANS: Not just a traditional dance class, movement class improves students coordination, stage presence, rhythm, and timing. By studying various forms of dance from around the world, students will enhance their natural sense of rhythm and improve their instrumental playing and expression. Step dancing, flamenco, and jazz will be just a few of the many forms of dance used. JAZZ THEORY & IMPROVISATION (ages 10+): This course is for all instruments and designed to introduce students to improvisation through the understanding of jazz theory and harmony. Chord scale usage, harmonic analysis, and ear training are emphasized, as students begin to explore and develop their unique sound and style through the concept of jazz improvisation. An outline of the history of evolution of jazz music will be included. Some basic knowledge of classical theory is required.

RHYTHM CANES: Students perform a wide variety of musical styles on an assortment of contemporary and world percussion instruments. This ensemble offers students of all ability levels the opportunity to expand their performance skills and strengthen overall musicianship through collaborative music-making. This class is for young musicians without a percussion background. Students will be introduced to rhythm and ensemble awareness through percussion performance. POP/JAZZ VOCALS: Students will have the opportunity to sing contemporary songs where they will work on mic techniques, breathing, and stage presence. They will learn about identifying chord changes, adjusting melodic phrasing within songs, and become familiar with classic jazz styles as well as emerging pop genres. PIANO DUET CLASS: Prerequisite - 2 years of piano study. This course is a unique opportunity for students to experience a group piano class dedicated to ensemble playing along with sight-reading. Each class works on ensemble playing through pieces that require two or more players. Sight-reading drills along with rhythm reading are also incorporated into the class. Students can enjoy the camaraderie that comes with playing in a group environment. This course is meant to supplement a weekly private lesson. CHAMBER MUSIC: (All Instruments) Prerequisite - 4 years of instrumental instruction. Students will form small ensembles and receive coaching in preparation for performances. JAZZ COMBOS: Small ensemble opportunities will be created for students entered in Jazz Theory and Improvisation. The course allows the students practical application of materials and concepts covered in the class. ROCK BANDS: A fun and educational rock experience! Students will form small rock bands, according to age and level, and learn simple drumbeats, piano chords, bass lines, and guitar parts. They will also learn to use lead sheets, and will study the basic parts of song: melody, lyrics, chord changes, and form. This class emphasizes teamwork and will make each child feel like a valuable contributor.
