1 Week of August 1, 2011 Lessons for the Leader Preschoolers are learning new things they can do all the time. Help the preschoolers realize God made them able to do many things. Teach them how God used David even as a young boy. Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13. Samuel had been sad about King Saul. God told Samuel to go to the house of Jesse to appoint a new king. Samuel told the elders he came in peace. Samuel invited the elders and Jesse's family to prepare themselves for worship. When you are given the opportunity to prepare for worship, what is your response? Think about how Jesse felt as he presented his older sons and as Samuel asked for the youngest son to be brought in from tending the sheep. Ponder the possible emotions in the room as David arrived. Jesse and his elder sons had come to worship God. David had come from tending sheep. What happened to David when Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him? What happens when the Holy Spirit controls your life? Read 1 Samuel 16:1-23. What happened to Saul when the Spirit of God left him? What advice did Saul's servants give? How did the young man describe David, Jesse's son, who played the harp? How does this description differ from the one in verse 12? The Spirit of God made a difference in David's life. Does your life give evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? Name the way David helped Saul. Music can calm the soul or rest the mind. David could soothe Saul's restlessness with his harp playing. God made David able to do many things over the course of his life. Help preschoolers understand that God makes them able to do many things. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Large Group Only Format: Follow all the numbers for a 5- to 60-minute large group only format. Hold your Bible open as you tell the story. David Helped Based on 1 Samuel 16:1-23 Jesse lived in the town of Bethlehem. He had eight sons [show eight fingers]. His youngest son, David, was a shepherd. David helped his father by caring for the sheep [make baa sound]. David took the sheep to green grass and led them to fresh water. David kept other animals from hurting the sheep. Sometimes, while watching the sheep, David would play music on his lyre (li r), also called a harp. The lyre or harp is a U-shaped musical instrument with strings. It makes beautiful sounds when someone strums the strings [display teaching picture]. Saul was the king of the country where Jesse and his sons lived. King Saul was not a happy king [make sad faces]. Saul felt upset and afraid most of the time. His helpers said, "Let us look for someone who can play the harp. When you feel upset. The music will help you feel better." A servant told King Saul about David. The king sent his helpers to Jesse [stand, march in place 10 steps, and sit down]. The king's helpers announced, "King Saul needs your son David. David can help King Saul." David Helped
3 Jesse packed bread and food and placed it on a donkey for David to take to the king. Jesse sent his son to help the king [stand, march in place 10 steps, and sit down]. Whenever King Saul felt upset or afraid, David played his harp [pretend to strum a harp]. The music helped King Saul feel better. King Saul liked David very much. He sent a message to David's father, Jesse: "Let David stay with me." David stayed with the king. David played his harp when the king felt upset or afraid. David helped King Saul. 10aReview the Bible Story (5 minutes) 9 blocks, tape, scissors, "Teaching Picture 11 David Helped" from step 8 Print "Stack and Tell" (CD) and cut apart. Ask: "What does this picture help us remember from the Bible story?" Invite three children to stack the blocks with the picture of David playing the harp. Ask: "What does this picture help us remember from the Bible story?" Give a child the block with the name David. Read aloud the name. Direct the child to put the block beside a picture of David. Distribute the Saul title and encourage a child to put the block beside the picture of Saul. Lead a child to say the last word (harp). Lead child to put the harp block next to the picture of David playing the harp. Ask: "What did David do with the harp?" Comment: " 'David played his harp for Saul.' 1 Samuel 16:23. God made David able to care for sheep, play the harp, and help King Saul. God made each of us able to do many things." 11aPresent the Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 12aUse Worship Guides (5 minutes) Worship Guides, markers Distribute materials. Print the words of the Bible verse and the reference around the edge of the paper plate. Distribute the clothespin words to seven volunteers. Instruct: "Let's take turns clipping the clothespin words to the matching words on the plate." Read aloud each word before clipping it on the plate. Display and read aloud the Bible verse. Encourage children to repeat the verse after you. Turn over a clothespin word as children repeat the verse. Say: "God made David able to play the harp." 1 Make Application ( minutes) Invite children to name things they can do now that they could not do when they were babies. Call out several things, inviting children who can do the things to stand: tie shoes, walk a pet, make a bed, ride a bike, carry a gallon of milk, and so on. Ask: "Are there things you wish you could do now but you are too young or little to do?" Invite responses. Conclude: "We learned in the Bible story about Samuel that God planned for us to grow. In the Bible story about David we learned that we can help because God made us able to do many things. We will continue to grow and learn to do new things." 15aGo to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Teacher Tip Looking for additional resources to enhance your teaching? 5 Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. White heavyweight paper, crayons, yarn, scissors, glue, cotton swabs, small bowls Print "Harp" (CD) on heavyweight paper (1 per child). Cut 3-foot pieces of yarn (1 per child). Pour small amounts of glue into bowls. Teacher Tips Paint with watercolors. Assign a number to each child. Rotate the papers around the table, allowing the children to color the spots with only their assigned numbers. Heavyweight paper (8½ by 11 inches), hole punch, wax paper, tape, scissors, rubber bands, embellishments Fold heavyweight paper in half (lengthwise) and cut, making two long strips. Cut 3-inch square pieces of wax paper (1 per child). Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list rubber bands, and post. Teacher Tips Trim edges level before attaching wax paper. Place chairs in semicircle rows. Lead kids to play in a vuvuzela orchestra. Invite kids to take turns being the conductor. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Color by Number Say: "We learned David helped the king by playing his harp. A harp is 'a musical instrument with strings that you strum or pluck.' God made David able to do many things. God made us with the ability to do many things also. We might not play the harp like David, but we are able to do other things. Let's color a picture of a harp. Use the color key shown on your paper [point]. Let me say the colors and numbers first." Review the color key. It is OK if the children choose not to follow the key. Distribute the pictures and crayons. Allow time for children to color. Instruct: "Now, let's glue yarn over the strings on our harps. I'll give you a very long piece of yarn. Lay one end of the yarn at the top of a string. Stretch the yarn to the bottom of the string. Cut your yarn, then glue the yarn to the string. Do this for all of the strings you want to cover with yarn." Distribute yarn, scissors, cotton swabs, and glue. Lead children to clean the area. Conclude: "God made people able to do many things. David took care of sheep. 'David played his harp for Saul.' 1 Samuel 16:23. We are able to do many things." Pray. Worship Through Dramatic Play Make and Play Vuvuzelas (voo voo zay la) State: "We are making vuvuzelas today. These are horns similar to kazoos. David helped Saul by playing his harp. We can play music with our vuvuzelas." Distribute paper strips, wax paper, and embellishments. Demonstrate how to roll the paper strips (long sides) so that one end has a smaller opening than the other. Assist with taping the tubes. Create an air hole by inserting a hole punch in the smaller end, pushing it as far as possible, and punching a hole. Encourage children to decorate their vuvuzelas. Help children wrap wax paper over the larger ends of the vuvuzelas and hold in place with rubber bands. Talk about the Bible story as children work. Lead children to clean the area. Invite children to play their vuvuzelas. Instruct: "Blow into the vuvuzela without covering the punched hole." Say: " 'David played his harp for Saul.' 1 Samuel 16:23. God made David able to do many things such as care for sheep and play the harp. God made us able to do many things also." Pray. Week of August 1, 2011
6 Chairs (1 per child), CD player, worship music CD such as Worship KidStyle Music CD**, paper, marker, tape Set chairs in a circle. Print individual letters of harp on separate papers. Tape letters to the backs of chairs. Questions In what Bible book is today's story found? (1 Samuel) What was David's job when he was young? (shepherd) What would David do sometimes while watching the sheep? (play the harp) Who was the king where David lived? (Saul) When Saul was feeling upset or afraid, what did David do to make him feel better? (played the harp) Who made David able to play the harp? (God) What is the name of David's father Jesse or Matthew? (Jesse) Say the Bible verse. Clean plastic combs, copier paper, long blades of grass, Velcro strips, masking tape, wooden blocks Set up items at different stations: combs, paper, grass, Velcro, string, blocks. Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list grass, and post. Teacher Tips Use string instead of tape. Play a recording of harp music. Worship Through Games Play Musical Chairs with a Twist Direct children to sit in the chairs. State: "Let's play musical chairs with a twist. [Designate one child to stand and remove his chair from the circle.] While the music plays, everyone walks around the inside of the circle of chairs. When the music stops, everyone quickly sits down. The person without a chair will answer a question [see sidebar]." Play the music and stop a few seconds into the music. Ask the standing child a question [see sidebar]. Repeat the questions as needed or make up new questions to ask. Continue to play as time permits or until each child answers a question. Play regular musical chairs by removing a chair each round until one chair remains. Introduce a new game. Say: "This time, everyone walks in a circle. When the music stops, everyone sit on the floor. The first one to sit chooses a chair with a letter on it. Place the chairs to this side [point]. Everyone walks each time." Play and stop music, calling on four children to move the chairs. Say: "Let me put the chairs in the correct order. What is this word? Harp. 'David played his harp for Saul.' 1 Samuel 16:23. God made David able to do many things such as care for sheep and play the harp. God made us able to do many things also." Pray. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Explore Sounds Say: " 'David played his harp for Saul.' 1 Samuel 16:23. Has anyone heard a harp being played? A harp is strummed or plucked. It can be beautiful music to hear. God made David able to do many things, such as play the harp. God made us able to do many things also. We can make all kinds of sounds. Let's move through the stations exploring sounds we can make. Let's see if any of the sounds hurt our ears or if we really like the sounds we make." Guide children through the stations. d Combs, Paper, and Grass Instruct: "Hold the (item) with both hands. Pull the (item) tightly between your fingers [demonstrate] and blow on the edge." d Velcro Strips Instruct: "Let's stick the pieces together and then pull them apart to make sounds." Lead kids to pull the pieces apart quickly and slowly. d Blocks Instruct: "Let's tape the blocks to our shoes and walk on the blocks." Place blocks to the bottoms of children's shoes and wrap tape around both. d Snapping Fingers Teach children to snap. Conclude: "God made David able to do many things. God made us able to do many things also." Pray. Worship KidStyle Preschool Edition Leader Guide 2011 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. OK to copy.
