1 Speech Arts Classes Specific Rules For Speech Arts: 1). Students will be grouped by age within each Speech level. Please specify on the entry form Junior A (under 6), Junior B (under 10), Junior C (under 14), Intermediate (under 18), Senior (under 28), and adult. 2). REQUIRED BOOK AND COPY: The source book for each selection must be submitted at the time of performance. (This Provincial Festival rule provides for authors' copyrights.) A clean, accurate, typewritten copy of the piece to be performed must be submitted to the speech chairperson or to the Vanderhoof Public Library prior to the Festival. Copies should be typed in Times New Roman font size 14. Photocopies cannot be accepted. 3). Set pieces for choral groups can be accessed at the Vanderhoof Public Library or by contacting the Festival Speech Arts chairperson. 4). The Festival Committee will supply the source book and typewritten copy for all set pieces. 5). For props, no live flame or live props are allowed. 6). The content of all selections must be appropriate for a general audience. Please refer to General Rules for more information and to the online syllabus of the BC Provincial Festival of the Performing Arts. Procedure: 1). Choose piece(s). 2). Fill out entry form online (or paper version found in printed syllabus). 3). Submit typed copy of piece to chairperson. 4). Prepare presentation. 5). Bring the source book (the book in which the piece is published) fifteen minutes before your presentation is scheduled, and give it to the entry secretary at the Festival. 6). Present your piece and receive the comments of the adjudicator. 7). Feel free to stay to enjoy the presentations of other participants during the day and benefit from what the adjudicator has to offer! Some selections will be requested to be performed at the final concert. Qualifying performances will receive Festival awards and/or recommendation to compete at the Provincial level.

2 Definitions: 1). Lyric Poetry: a short, unified poem expressing the poet s own experience, thoughts and feelings. Does not tell a story, but describes a scene or emotion and is rarely humorous. It is usually performed in a relaxed sitting or standing position with no movement. 2). Narrative Poetry: a poem that tells a story and usually contains dialogue. A portion of a poem may be chosen rather than a whole work. May be humorous. Gestures may be used to enhance the telling of the story. 3). Dramatic Poetry: a poem that portrays a character distinct from the poet. May be humorous, and gestures may be used to enhance the telling of the story. 4). Humorous Poetry: any light or humorous poetry in any form or verse. 5). Sonnet: any sonnet by any sonneteer. 6). Storytelling: presentation of an original or adapted story, told in the performer s own words. No set text need be memorized. The story should be well-rehearsed but not sound memorized. Props and gestures may be used. 7). Dramatic Prose: presentation of a concise selection of a few paragraphs from a novel or story that form a dramatic unit. It should be spoken in a storytelling style, using the exact words of the author. Editing should be limited and it should not be performed as a Dramatic Scene (no acting or movement). Gestures may be used; vocal characterization is encouraged. 8). Bible Reading: a selection from any Bible translation. Should be age-appropriate and reference should be announced before the reading. 9). Story Reading: reading a story from a book of your own choice. 10). Public Speaking, oratory: entrant s own original speech. Submit a typed outline rather than a script. 11). Public Speaking, impromptu: a topic will be provided by the adjudicator. Five minutes preparation will be allowed. 12). Dramatic Scene, Solo: speech of a character from a published play, including by William Shakespeare. (For a selection by Shakespeare, enter Shakespeare speech class rather than Dramatic Scene speech class). The scene may be edited or adapted to eliminate additional characters. A short introduction explaining the piece should be given. Simple props and costumes may be used; movement may be used to help express the character. Indicate play, author, act, scene and character on entry form. 13). Dramatic Scene, Duo: see above; for two voices. 14). Dramatic Scene, Group: a portion of a published play. Lines must be memorized. See Dramatic Scene, Solo, for details. 15). Monologue: personal experience point of view, not part of a play. May be from diaries, letters or writing in the first person. Some movement or dramatization may be used. A short introduction explaining the piece should be given. Suggested Source book: Winning Monologues for Young Actors and Encore! by Peg Kehret.

3 16). Variations: a short program of two selections of different forms and moods but of a similar theme. The entrant is expected to introduce and explain the choices and will be adjudicated on total presentation. 17). Original Poetry: a poem written and performed by the author; must be from memory. 18). Choral Speaking: a group interpretation of poetry or prose. Most is spoken by choir as a whole, but there may be some solo or small group voices included. There may be gestures or actions on the part of the choir as a whole, but no movement from place to place. There may be a leader, but he/she may not prompt. 19). Choric Drama: choral speaking of a text to which should be added movement, mime, characterization and use of simple costumes or props. Music and sound effects are permissible. 20). Reader s Theatre: a group of not more than 12 readers present a play or story in the reader s theatre style of holding scripts (lines not memorized), a small amount of gestures/movement and simple costumes. 21). Creative Writing for Performance: solo work written and performed by the writer. Group numbers may be collaboration or the work of one group member, who MUST be included in the performing group. 22). Sight Reading: a grade-appropriate selection of prose or poetry chosen by the adjudicator and given at the time of performance. The participant has about a minute to review the piece before reading aloud. The title and author should also be spoken. State grade according to the maximum grade of the majority of the group. $50 per entry any age. Two pieces required: One Set piece and one Own Choice (maximum of three minutes). Set pieces will be posted on Festival website each year by grade. SA81- Primary (K- grade 3) SA82- Elementary (grades 4 & 5)
