1 Dear Prospective Auditionees: Thank you for your interest in The Performing Arts Academy! We are very pleased to announce that we are producing Into the Woods. Within this packet, you will find information about auditions for Into the Woods. In this production, there will be many unique types of experiences. Performing is an art form that demands continual growth and recrafting, and Into the woods is jam packed with fun new opportunities. That s part of our mission in The Performing Arts Academy; we offer diverse, unique, and rigorous artistic experiences every summer, hoping our actors will hone and develop their skills further. This summer there will be theatrical flying and flight workshops for the characters of Cinderella s Godmother/Mother and the Witch. Also, there will be hot and cold foam latex prosthetics with airbrush body spraying used for the some of the fairy tale characters in this show. All of these colorful fairytale characters enable for some fabulous makeup and costume choices! Also, this show has a large fun cast of characters. We are very much looking forward to seeing some old and new faces this year! Hope to see you at auditions! 2 Audition Information There will be two components to Into the Woods auditions: a vocal and acting audition. For the vocal audition, auditionees will be expected to know about 32 bars of their selected song from memory. Sheet music is available on our website. theacademystb@gmail.com if you have any questions. After the vocal audition, auditionees will be invited to participate in a callback audition. Callback auditions will consist of singing in both the choral ensemble in which that character is seen and the character s own solos; in this type of audition, students will also experience what is called a cold read. Theatrical cold reading is reading aloud from a script or other text with little or no rehearsal, practice or study in advance with other actors. All auditions will be held at the Chalmette High Cultural Arts Building located on 2600 Palmisano Blvd. Please enter the building from the main entrance on Palmisano Blvd.

3 Vocal Audition Information All prospective cast members should bring a printed headshot or current picture and a resume to the audition. ALL STUDENTS auditioning should be familiar with the songs Prologue: Into the Woods and First Midnight and Second Midnight. These do not need to be memorized. The Original Broadway Cast Recording is purchasable on itunes and is available on YouTube. Album Cover If you would like to be considered for a particular role you will need to be prepared to sing about 32 bars (approximately 45 seconds) of the specific vocal selections associated with each role in which you are interested. 4 Casting Information Although widely known and beloved for its iconic score, Into the Woods requires a cast of strong actors, who not only can sing, but also are comfortable creating characters through physicality and movement. Below is a description of each character along with audition material for this show. Lead Female Characters: The Witch (Mezzo-Soprano: Low F - High F) On the surface, she is self-serving, possessive, sarcastic, vain, and charismatic. Inwardly, she is insecure and lonely. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs, a challenging role, strong singing and acting needed Song: Prologue, Last Midnight, Act II Finale-Part 3 (Children Will Listen) Baker s Wife (Mezzo-Soprano: G - High F) Determined, ambitious and bright. A romantic at heart, but materialistic at times. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed Song: Prologue, It Takes Two, Moments in the Woods Cinderella (Soprano: G - High G) Earnest, pretty, warm-hearted, kind, and trying to find her place in the world. A survivor. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting and singing skills needed Song: Prologue, On the Steps of the Palace, No One is Alone-Part II Little Red Riding Hood (Mezzo-Soprano: B - High F) A spoiled, clever, vain, smart character, seeks approval in place of love, of which she has had none. Fun character to play, one of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed. Soprano or Alto role Song: Prologue, I Know Things Now, No One is Alone-Part II Rapunzel (High Soprano: C - High A) loopy-but-lovely maiden who is completely and utterly innocent of worldly matters and drifts through life. Needs good vocal control. Strong soprano Song: Rapunzel and Our Little World Jack s Mother (Soprano: B - High F sharp A) single mother and a fighter, working hard and determined to make a good life for her hapless son. Older, mid-range female. Narrator (Baritone or Alto: G - High E) Intellectual and pleasant. A good storyteller who relates directly with the audience. This character can be male or female. Song: Prologue, Act I Finale: Ever After, and No More

5 Supporting Characters: Cinderella's Mother/ Godmother (Soprano) : Nurturing and loving. A spirit, who dispenses useful advice. Good singing voice, possible flight rehearsal Song: Cinderella at the Grave Cinderella's Stepmother (Mezzo-Soprano: A sharp - High F) Mean-spirited, greedy and demanding. Superb character part. Lucinda (Mezzo-Soprano: C - High E) Cinderella's stepsister, lovely but black of heart. Loud, energetic. Good character role. Florinda (Mezzo-Soprano: C - High E) Cinderella's stepsister, lovely but black of heart. Loud, energetic. Good character role. Granny (open vocal range) : Bitter and vindictive, she is Little Red's feisty, savage, knife-wielding grandmother. No solo singing, but plenty of humor. Giant ( Female or male) Loud, angry, offstage voice only. 6 Lead Male Characters: Baker (Baritone: A - High G) An average working man. Warm hearted and determined but insecure, and has never faced his fears. His wife is the brains behind the operation. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed Song: Prologue, It Takes Two and No More Jack (Tenor: A - High G) The reckless Giant Killer, almost a man. Eager to please and impulsive. A little slow of learning, and misled by his lack of self-knowledge. A challenging role. Strong tenor role. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed Song: Prologue and Giants in the Sky, No One is Alone Part II Cinderella's Prince (Baritone: B - High F) Vain, gorgeous, self-dramatizing and endlessly confident. A hero in his own life s story. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed Song: Agony and Hello Little Girl Rapunzel's Prince (Baritone: C sharp - High E) Just as vain, gorgeous, etc as his older brother. Strives endlessly to be beat him in all things. He is the more humorous role. One of the leading roles with plenty of songs. Good acting skills needed Song: Agony and Hello Little Girl Wolf (Baritone: B - High G flat) Hungry and insatiable. Seductive and sexy. A very physically challenging part, must have endurance. Will wear prosthetics. Song: Agony and Hello Little Girl Mysterious Man (Baritone: G - High E-flat A) mischievous vagrant with a secret. Must be physical actor, who can move. Song: Prologue, Act I Finale: Ever After, and No More Narrator (Baritone: G - High E) Intellectual and pleasant. A good storyteller who relates directly with the audience. Song: Prologue, Act I Finale: Ever After, and No More Supporting Characters: Steward : Open vocal range. Surly and bureaucratic, full of self-importance. No solo singing but plenty of good lines. Cinderella's Father ( Open vocal range ): A drinker, out of touch with his family but harmless and well-meaning. No solo singing.
