2 Jane Cain, CAGA, Charlotte Chapter Dean Office: (704) A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Do you ever marvel at how vast the literature is for our instrument? My daughter, a bassoonist, has a fair chance of being acquainted with almost all the standard repertoire for bassoon, down to the moderately obscure. Organists, on the other hand, have centuries of compositions and untold numbers of composers to learn about, and reams more being written every day. It certainly makes our chosen instrument a pleasure and a challenge. When I attend organ recitals, I am delighted to hear a piece I already know: how will it sound on this instrument; how will the performer interpret it? I am equally delighted to hear a piece I don t know: have I heard anything else by this composer; how does it fit into the musical period when it was written; what is the emotional affect of the piece; would I like to learn and perform it myself? Years ago I had a mentor who occasionally would ask me, Are you still learning new repertoire? My impression was that he was not. I thought it the strangest question. How could I ever NOT be learning new repertoire? I hope that during the summer months you are finding time for renewal. That you are hearing both new and familiar organ music (obvious reference to the Summer Recital Series) and that you are finding time to learn some new music and reacquaint yourself with some old friends. 3 Stigall Scholars Update Congratulations to Stigall Scholars Luke Rosamond, Danielle Little, and Matthew Buie following their concert at Providence Baptist Church on July 16, The Charlotte AGO is very proud of each one of you! New Organ at Matthews Presbyterian Church Matthews Presbyterian Church is pleased to announce the completion of a 38 rank, 3 manual pipe organ, built by Garland Pipe Organs, Inc. based in Ft. Worth, TX. The building of the organ was made possible by a generous posthumous gift from a lifelong member of the church in memory of his mother. We hope that this organ will fill our church and community with uplifting music offered to the glory of God. Our Organ Dedication Worship Service will take place on August 20, 2017 at 10:30 in the morning. Future special events begin with a Dedicatory Organ Recital on September 29, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary of the church with Patrick A. Scott as the Guest Organist. (Pictured left: Placement of largest façade Pipes as of Nov ) Your Board at work.... The new executive board for our season has had its first meeting on July 10. Important business matters that were discussed include: Chapter programs for the coming year Update on our Summer Recital Series and Stigall scholarship fund Bringing our website and chapter administration guidelines up to date Ideas for the monthly online newsletter content budget Save the Date! 4 In Memorium... Vivian Hovis Cobb ( ) The Charlotte AGO expresses our deepest sympathy to the family of former Charlotte AGO member Vivian Cobb (November 15, June 29, 2017). Vickie graduated from Queens College in with honors in classical music in She became the first organist for Memorial Methodist Church, and began teaching piano in her parents Parkwood Avenue home. Her Charlotte organist and teaching careers spanned five decades. She is survived by her daughter, Candice, and partner, Martha McMillan, Mozart, the big fine cat; and a very long list of friends, animals, and extended family. Elizabeth (Betsy) Thomas Johnson ( ) The Charlotte AGO expresses our deepest sympathy to the family Charlotte AGO member Betsy Johnson (September 26, June 23, 2017). Betsy earned a B.S. degree in piano performance from Winthrop College, an M.A. in music theory from the University of South Florida, and studied conducting under Eleazar de Carvalho of the Sao Paolo Symphony, Brazil. After teaching in Florida, Betsy returned to her hometown of Clover,SC in Upon her return, she taught piano for almost forty years and served as a church organist and choir director for several decades. She most recently was Music Director at St. Matthew's United Church of Christ in Maiden, N.C. In her musical endeavors, Betsy felt blessed by her many talented students, congregants, and their supportive families. She was very proud that many of her students received full music scholarships to college. Do you know? Can you identify this organ along with the church that houses it and the place it is located?
