Balderston was the cello coach for Daniel Barenboim s West-Eastern Divan workshops in 1999 and 2000 in Weimar, Germany, the 2001 Workshop held in Chicago, and the 2004 Workshop in Seville, Spain. In 2002 he accompanied a group of colleagues to Shanghai, China for that city s international music festival. In August of 2004 Balderston was featured as lecturer, soloist and coach at the International String Music Festival in Taipei, Taiwan. Balderston was Assistant Principal Cello with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 10 years, and a member of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra for 10 years. He performed as soloist with both orchestras. Balderston began his studies on the cello with Gabor Rejto in his native southern California, and earned both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Lynn Harrell.
5 Stephen Balderston April 22, 2018 biographies Chicago-area pianist Timothy Mah earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Northwestern University as a student of Donald Isaak, Sylvia Wang, and Alan Chow, and has collaborated with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Cleveland Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Canadian Brass. He has appeared as soloist with several Chicago-area orchestras, has performed in recital as pianist of the DePaul Trio (with violinist Samuel Magad and cellist Stephen Balderston), and has been featured on WFMT 98.7 FM radio and at Millennium Park in Chicago. As an educator, Mr. Mah is a former adjunct faculty member at both DePaul University and the College of Lake County, has held the position of instrumental and vocal staff accompanist at DePaul University, and has served as assistant orchestra director at Glenbrook North and South High Schools.
