MARCH 11, 1975 The Cambrdge YMCA may be used next fall to house MT students untl completon of the new West Campus dorm, scheduled for October 1. By Stephen Blatt The Cambrdge YMCA may be used to house 150 MT students next fall untl completon of the new West Campus dorm - whch s scheduled for October 1~. v-.. x,,. ^,.,, X t. Accordng to Nancy Wheatley, Assstant Dean for Student Affars, other alternatves for accommodatng the people assgned to the new dorm nclude usng half of Random Hall and usng the area n Ashdown whch s currently beng occuped by undergraduates. The Dean's Offce s also consderng overcrowdng exstng MT dormtores or housng students n faculty homes. Wheatley sad that not all of these optons wll need to be used f constructon of the dorm contnues on schedule. However, f the new dorm s not ready to house the 150 students scheduled to move n September 1, MT wll have to fnd housng for all 300 students. - Overcrowdng n exstng dorms wll be "just under what we had ths year," sad Wheatley, unless new dorm students are moved nto them _temporarly. MT wll have space for students next fall, but wll have a freshman class of 1130 to 1150 students, "assumng the Admssons Offce comes n on target," she noted. The Cambrdge YMCA, located n Central Square, has "a very good setup," Wheatley sad, descrbng the rooms as "sngles wth beds and desks, comparable to MT rooms." Students to be housed at 'Y'? KRegsstra ton proposed for By Stephen Blatt Regstraton materal for the fall term wll be avalable to students at the begnnng of the fnal week of classes ths sprng, accordng to Wnston Flynn, Assstant Regstrar. n prevous years, fall regstraton packets were maled out on August 1, to returned by August 31. Tlhe reasons for changng the tmng are twofold, accordng to Flynn, who sad that "We can save a consderable amount of money n malng costs, and can allow foregn students to regster early." Under the present system. regstraton materal s not maled out of the country, so that foregn students cannot regster untl they return n the fall. '"Ths tmetable s really pushng the departnlents more than the students." Flynn sad. notng that the departnments, n order to have class schedules ncluded n the regstraton materal, must fnsh plannng ther schedules-earler than n prevous years. Tle ) catalog, however, wll not be ready any earler ths year than n prevous year, accordng to sources n the Regstrar's offce. Last year, the changes fall term catalog was not avalable to students untl they returned to MT n the fall. Accordng to Flynn, seventy percent of the students return the regstraton materal for the sprng term, gven out n December, "almost mmedately." May 23, the end of fnals week, was orgnally planned as the deadlne fobr returnng the forms. However, because of schedulng conflcts, the deadlne for returnng the forms has not been set. t wll be later than May 23, noted Flynn, who sad that the Regstrar's Offce would lke the tbrns returned as soon as possble. "We've got work to do to process them, and we'd lke to do t over the summer so we can handle the freshmen's forms n September," sad Flynn., '" don't expect all the forms back by May 23, but 'm hopng for as nmuch coopraton as possble."' The regstraton packets wll be gven out n the Buldng 10 obby on May 12 and 13 wth same procedure as s used to dstrbute the sprng regstraton materal each December. As n prevous years, freshmen wll pck up ther fall regstraton materal when they leet wth ther advsors durng R/O Wteek. ran rectcor deal stalled F fty students could be housed n one buldng of Random Hall. Whle ths mght dsrupt the operaton of the buldng, whch s normally used for MT transent housng, Wheatley explaned that "we want the new dorm people grouped to- {Please turn to page 3) ('rofessor Bruce Mazlsh was recently named head of the Department of Humantes. n an nrerverw wth The Tech, Mazlsh dscussed hs deas on the role of humnantes n an MT educaton.) By Leon Tatevossan The T'ech: What do you thnk the role of the Dept of Humantes at MT should be? Prof. Afazlsh: Well, thnk that t should be plural, a number of roles. One role s qute obvously to offer the best possble work n humantes to students who are manly majorng n scence or technology. And later on we mght want to talk about what the word '"humantes" means, because t can cover a multtude of sns and vrtues. Then t seems to me that the dept. also has a role n supplyng another perspectve to the scentfc or technologcal one for anyone and everyone at the nsttute, the so-called humanst way of lookng at materals, whch s soft rather than hard, tends to delght n ambgutes and ambvalences nstead of certan truths. thnk another role s to allow the students who decde that the scence or technologcal students who decde that the scence or technologcal path s not for them, and yet don't want to transfer out of MT, to reman here but to major n hunantes. Another role, and one that must become ncreasngly mportant. and has been n the last year or so. s for the Department to beconle ntegrated nto the full ntellectual ltfe and work of the nsttute, n other words to become nvolved wth the people n engneerng and scence n tryng to understand problems By Mke McNamee Dsagreements over reprocessng of spent nuclear fuel from reactors whch the Unted States s plannng to sell to ran are delayng negotatons on that sale, accordng to government offcals. Meanwhle, news of a proposed three-year program to tran 54 ranan students n nuclear engneerng at MT has brought mxed reactons from MT faclty and students, rangng from support to attacks on the prograrn as "academc prosttuton." US and ranan negotators are clashng over safeguard provsons of the sales contracts, under whch re-processng of spent fuel wll be controlled. ran s also negotatng to buy a re-processng plant to handle the fuel n ran, whle the US would prefer that the fuel be processed outsde of the country under nternatonal supervson. The spent fuel conssts of a mxture of uranum and plutonum whch can be seperated by an expensve chemcal process. Plutonum from such fuel can be used as reactor fuel or as explosve materal n nuclear weapons. The reactors whch ran s negotatng to buy - seven or eght reactors, each producng 000 megawatts of electrcal energy - wll produce a total of about 2000 pounds of plutonum annually, offcals of the Energy Research and Development Admnstraton told The Tech. ran s a sgnatory to the 1970 Nuclear Non-Prolferaton Treaty, pledgng the ranan government to specfc prohbtons aganst buldng nuclear weapons. Under that treaty, ran could be allowed to process spent fuel under nternatonal supervson. The Unted States, however, can specfy n the sales agreement that the fuel be processed outsde of ran, as was specfed n nuclear reactor sales to Egypt and srael. Reacton Educatonal problems wth the proposed nuclear engneerng tranng program. have drawn crtcsm from many members of the MT faculty. Faculty members have called the program "academc prosttuton" and "sellng a department to the hghest bdder" due to some of the unusual aspects of the arrangemnents. that are related to the creaton of a new knd of world by scence and technology. thnk that the engneers and scentsts are very aware of the way n whch value questons, socal context, and hstorcal context are ntegral now to ther own work, and thnk both sdes have a great deal to offer to each other; n some ways n the future the only way you'll be able to do good scence or technology s by havng a very keen awareness of the humanstc and socal scency component. Tech: Do you thnk the nsttute has been too slow n realzng the humanstc aspects of technology? Moreover, as Mke One engneerng faculty member crtczed the MT admnstraton for "settng polcy wthout adequate dscusson. Ths sets a very mportant precedent. t shouldn't be taken lghtly." he told The Tech. "Ths has broad mplcatons for MT." MT's standards for graduate admsson would be affected by the program, the faculty nmember sad: ''Ths s contrary to our phlosophy of takng the applcants and sftng out the best ones. What f we made a deal wth South Dakota to take ther ten best students? Would we stll say our standards were not affected?" Nuclear control Faculty memebrs contacted by The Tech were dvded on the ssue of control of the nuclear reactors. nsttute Professor Phlp Morrson, a physcst who was nvolved n early atohfc Weapons research, sad he felt the ssues had not been dscussed fully enough to allow "dashng off n ether drecton." "There s a conflct here between the freedom of scentfc nformaton, whch s presumed to be nternatonal and unversal. and fears of nuclear prolferaton," Morrson sad. " don't thnk you can rght off the bat that ths s good or ths s bad wthout a lot more dscusson." ran has been "next on the (Please turn to page O) MT haurnntes: what role? On the other hand, you're dealng wth a felt need for change. and that's also mportant, mean, to understand how change can and does come about. Mtazlsh: don't thnk MT s unque n ths problem. All unverstes have requrements that must be met. n fact, MT s extraordnarly open to a student who wshes to learn the ropes and then move as he or she wshes once past the frst year. The wnnng phrase and composer wll be announced at the drawng of wnnng tckets for the lottery. CSF slogan phrases may be submtted at the tme of purchase of lottery chances or may be sent drectly to the MT Communty Servce Fund, room llazlsh: Some are and some aren't. But n general, 'm very mpressed wth the openness brought to the Department by so many of the students. Tech: Are there any plans to establsh a graduate school n-the Department? Mlazlsh: Not a formal graduate program, but t mght be of enormous ntel!lectual beneft to have a very small number of specally pcked graduate students. for example, someone partcularly nterested n electronc musc. MT s flexble enough so that you don't need a set graduate program. Tech: Do you foresee any changes n the Department n the near future? Mazlsh: 'd lke to use that queston to make a pont about humantes. The word hunmlantes s really somewhat ambguous. There are certan dscplnes that are normally covered under that term. Some of the subjects tradtonally defned under the term are hstory, lterature, phlosophy, mulsc, fne arts, lngustcs, socology, n other words, an enormous range. The Dept. of Humantes embraces four major dscplnes or felds: lterature, hstory, musc and archaeology/ anthropology. To begn wth, ths s a great range, and these dscplnes are extremely dfferent. Lterature, for some nvofved n teachng, s more a matter of hgher. crtcsm, for others, lterature s poltcs, for others, t's prmarly a queston of lterary hstory. Then we have a number of other programs, for example, a farly vgorous wrtng program that has been emergng, and a musc secton that s becomng more and more nvolved n a program throughout the nsttute. Then we have the Cambrdge Humantes Semnar, we have Crossroads, possbltes n Amercan Studes or Russan Studes, and the dfferent XX majors. 3 Eu.ene haerln, Eugene C:hamberlan, Advsor to ForegnStudents Foregn students face many problems at M:T Frst n a seres By Gerald Radack Of all the mnorty groups at MT, foregn students probably face the most problems n ther qests for MT educaton. A student from another country who comes to the nsttute often faces fnancal, language, legal, and other problems that mght seem to make the task mpossble. Yet.every- year hundreds of students - t1 458 ths year, or 17 per cent of the MT undergraduate student body - come from all over the world to study here. They come for a varety of reasons, but the chef one s almost always the desre for a techncal educaton at a school "whch has made ts reputaton nternatonally n engneerng," accordng to Advsor to Foregn Students Eugene Chamberlan. The largest of ther problems, Chamberlan told The Tech, s rasng the money to attend the nsttute. "Europeans fnd MT tuton too expensve," he ex- "gft money" can be gven to foregn students Chamberlan noted. US government regulatons make the fnancal stuaton even more dffcult for the foregn student. Ctzens of other countres are not elgble for such ad programs as Work-Study, Natonal Defense Studen-t Jmans, and Basc Educatonal Opportunty Grants, whch help many Amercan famles to fnance college educatons. n addton, wotk-permt regulatons whch govern foregn students workng n ths country have been made strcter n the past several years, makng t more dffcult for students to work ther way through school. "Some people get a job at MT," accordng to Palach Meesook '75, former presdent of the Tha Students Club. "Summer jobs are not allowed, although they used to be allowed," he sad. "Many students have come here wth hope for gettng some part tme job, but gettng a work (Please turn to page 10) planed, "but the number, of w applcants from the Arab world and Afrca s ncreasng, and suspect there wll be more (foregn students) whose parents can afford the tuton." The hmt tuton represents a "lfetme savngs" for an dan famly, accordng to K Sabramanan G, presdent of Sangam, the ndan Students' Club. Many students pay wllngly, however, because of hopes for ncreased earnng power. Budget: s By MPchael McNamee "s the MT fnancal crss that serous?" - f the events whch have occurred so far ths semester are ndcatve of what wll be happenng at MT for the rest of the year, that queston - asked wth more or less ncredulty, sarcasm, cyncsm, skeptcsm, or pan, dependng-on the speaker - wll be the Queston of the Year. MT's fnancal crss s already startng to be used to justfy decsons that are rasng eyebrows - and crtcsm - on campus, and all sgns pont to contnued changes n the way MT works, all based on the fnancal crss. How bad s the fnancal crunch? To answer that, one frst must ask, just what s the fnancal crunch? whle at the same tme cuttng expenses as much as possble. For last year's budget, the arthmetc looked somethng lke ths: Out of an operatng budget of- almost $230 mllon, an "operatng gap" of about $4 mllon represents the amount of operatng expenses that MT cannot meet out of revenue. Added to that s $4.3 mllon n non-operatng costs -whch occurred -- a $750,000 defct at the MT Press, $200,000 contrbuton to jont Harvard- MT programs, funds for the Alumn Assocaton, "underrecovery of overhead" from foundatons, endowment adjustments for academc buldngs, and the last part of cost for the Draper Lab dvestment n The result s $8.3 mllon n "total need for unrestrcted EXPENSES ( MLLONS ( OF DOLLARS ) /<; a nrect Coss h % SupportngBot,' f \ \ nstructon and,' /!S '\ /Research,Drect Co \ ' A-da... / oaredctost \d / 39,4 of nstrcton /and Unsponsored /{ Ad~ /,' Research 33.7 \ _ AutxAcvwntes -9.3 \ Drect Cost of -- Sponsored Research Budget bascs: the lttle wedge labelled "Operatng gap" s the problem. Accordng to the one man who probably knows best what MT's budgetary problems are, Chancellor Paul Gray '54, the crunch s due to one basc factor - a "structural mbalance n our operatng budget" - whch moves each year's budget further and further out of balance. Even f MT can cover any defcts that may occur ths year, Gray says, next year's budget wll be out of balance agan, about $1.5 to $2.5 mllon out of balance. Revenues for-. the nsttute are growng more slowly than expenses, leavng MT wth a contnung - problem requrng budgetary wzardry to solve. Snce , when the budgetary problem frst became.evdent, MT has been tryng to make up ts operatng defcts from "unrestrcted funds" - tuton ncome after fnancal ad s taken out, patent ncome, unrestrcted gfts, and so forth - s, ~... :..- /..., f fof oka aaw w,,c,?jp. The rest of the need represented "call on captal," accordng to Gray; t was pad out of endowment ncome or other reserves. Ths year, Gray predcts, the defct wll agan be $4.3 mnlon, but the causes wll be somewhat dfferent, The Press defct wll be up, whle the cost of the Draper dvestment wll be completely elmnated. The nsttute s usng a threepronged attack to try to elmnate the "structural mablance'" n the budget, Gray sad. To understand how the attack works, one must see how the budget allocates funds n three basc areas: research, academc and nstructonal programs, and support. - Research pays for tself, Lookng at the chart, the revenues from research pay for all drect research costs and for support costs assocated wth research - Dvson of Sponsored Research admnstraton, overhead, and so forth. (Costs on the chart are allocated as completely as possble; faculty-salares, for example, are allocated as research and nstructonal costs, representng the dvson of labor (wthn the-faculty). - Academc expenses are not suppsrted. by the revenue they generate. Drect cost of nstructon and ndrect nstructon support - about half the support costs - make up about $53.7 mllon of the $223.8 mllon budget. - Support s dvded evenly between research and-nstruncton; research pays for ts support costs, whle academc revenue does not cover academc support.... FY 7A4 REVENUES Support costs are gettng the most thorough revew nattempts to cut MT expendtures and restructure the budget. All departments nvolved n academc support - Admssons, Regstrar, Dean for Student Affars, secretaral support, and so forth - have "dsaggregated" ther functons nto "defnable and costable" basc tasks. The lst of furctons performed by each oftce, Gray enxplaned, was then rank-ordered by the prorty whch that functon has wthn the offcehow mportant the ndvdual tasks are for the completon of the offce's overall rassoa. To the Edtor: The- Ergo staff conssts of MT students'and alumn, as well as people- from; outsde MT. Warren Ross, an- MT undergraduate, -s-ergo's top offcer. Apparently, the ASA Commttee thnks that the staff s too small for Ergo to be a vable'organzaton. t s true, that Ergo has a small staff n' comparson to most other :newspapers, but so what? Supposed for a moment' that there were an MT student of superor ablty who produced a qualty _newspaper snglehandedly. Would hs paper be worth any less than a smlar one produced by 50 people? Of course not. The Commttee also charges that there are several members of the Ergo staff who are not currently afflated wth MT. That s true. But does one expect Ergo to refuse -the assstance of non-mt people when t s volunteered? Although thereare non-mt offcers on the staff, MT students stll control Ergo. Clearly, the publshng of Ergo s an MT actvty. n addton, however, the readng of (Contn ued from page 4) lne $3 mllon - about 7 per cent - up from the bottom," Gray sad. "Thngs below that lne go away." The second part of the attack s n academc expenses. Each academc dean has been nstructed to cut hs School's expendtures by 1.7 per cent ths year, Gray sad. Most deans are usng "nbblng" technques to acheve ths cut, lookng at "paperclps and photocopyng" expendtures n ther Schools, The School of Engneerng, however, s conductng a revew of ts operatons n a number of areas, lookng for long-term budgetary cuts"'that could be made, and4gray sad he expected other Schools to make smlar revews ths year or next. The thrd prong of the budget strategy rolves generatng new revenue. The nsttute s lookng for programs "that wll brng n more ncome than the amount of the margnal expense of runnng them," Gray sad. Rasng the sze of the freshman class to 1 30 next year s such a program; the -ranan program s L)'go s an MT actvty. Half of Ergo's crculaton s n the MT communty; the rest s dvded among other unverstes nearby. Ths means that the artcles (and the advertsng!) are ntended to be of nterest prmarly to MT students, whether or not the content of each artcle explctly concerns MT. -But- Ergo does cover MT events. Of course, other MT papers concentrate much more heavly n ths area, but most of Ergo's MT coverage s not duplcated. Does any other campus paper run artcles on the MT Phlosophy Department, as Ergo has done many tmes? Does any other paper revew phlosophy lectures over AP, or other campus lectures such as the ones by- George Resman and Robert Sade last sprng? n short, Ergo s produced by MT students, for MT students. But have saved Ergo's greatest value for last: the value of deas. A newspaper of deas performs a functon analogous to that of an advsor or a teacher. A man solcts the ad of an advsor, not necessarly because he fully agrees wth hm, but because he thnks that the advsor can present a vable alternatve and that somethng can be eat wng t e bu ebt cont&nues another. "We thnk the educatonal resources can be used more fully and effectvely, and we're lookng for ways to do that," Gray sad. Usng ths strategy wll gve MT one more defct year, accordng to Gray. Fscal 1976 (begnnng n June) wll probably show a shortfall of about $2.6 mllon, whle MT hopes to break-even n FY77. These expectatons are based on many assumptons - "modest growth" n the student body, ncome from the fund-rasng campagn, tutons ncreases "parallelng expenses" and probably not equal to ths year's record $350 -jump, and perhaps most mportant of all, a gradually mprovng economc stuaton. The admnstraton can only be wshed well n gettng MT back on ts feet fnancally. Qute a few people, however, are gong to be askng, "s MT's fnancal crss that serous?" n the months ahead. The admnstraton should be careful to ask tself that queston when t consders changes that wll have mpact far beyond the budget. Frst of all, when we added the athletc card requrement to the general ntramural Rules last sprng, we dd so n the hope that ths would be the frst step n a long process whch would nclude several changes n the athletc card tself. The changes were smply hoped-for. Secondly, t s a fact that most ntramural sports use Athletc Department facltes. Hs musc has been constantly changng over the past 25 years; each tme hs style takes a new turn, everyone lstens. The sextet of Mles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bll Evans, Phlly Joe Jones, and Paul Chambers was probably the most popular small jazz group of the fftes. The early sxtes brought Mles to record some memorable works wth the Gl Evans Orchestra. Although the bulk of hs musc was recorded before 1970 (he has released over 50 albums that are stll beng manufactured), t- was n that partcular year that he ntroduced electroncs nto hs musc. settng the trend for most of today's electrc jazz. Btches Brew was bascally the pacesetter for the new electrc Mles. The band ncluded such memorable names as John McLaughln, Blly Cobham, Jack DeJohnette. Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawnul, Herbe Hancock. Chck Corea. Arto Morera. and Keth Jarrett, all relatvely unkown at the tme. Ther heads were completely turned around by Mles' musc. When Chck Corea and Herbe Hancock -were told to play electrc pano. Corea was nsulted, and Hancock sad he had never seen one before. The musc was more mprovsatonal than jazz had ever been. Mles seldom wrote down melodes or chord changes: he just created hs muscal "coors." No pece was performed the same twce n a roxx. ddn't realze untl after lstenng to the entre L.re at the Fllnore album ( lnch ncludes 4 half-hour cuts of consecutve nghts n concert) that each cut s actually the same pece! As Mles has progressed to the present. hs albums have become more and more spaced. -Bg Fun s bascally a survey ot the post-brches Brewt perod and conssts of cuts whch were rejected from prevous albums. However hs latest album. G(et Up Wt'th ft. s probably the best abum nmles has recorded n years and s mportant for two reasons: t hs most versatle albunm (no' two of the 8 cuts are smlar), and t, MSles' frst recorded exposton of a new muscal effect. whch can hest be descrbed as "tone clusters." Mles not only plays trumpet on the album but uses a Yamaha organ as a regular feature of the band. He hooks up a wah-wah-pedal and other dstorton devces to the organ and plays clusters (6- or 7 -note chords of consecutve notes whch produce a harsh.,dssonant sound). The effect s very tnny and percng and at tme., sounds lke someone s sttng on the keyboard. Ths type of efect has not been attempted before n jazz rock. and 'm sure the lstenng publc wll need some tme to get used to t. The personnel on Get Up Wth t (except on "Honky Tonk"') conssts of Mles Davs (trumpet. organ. pano); Regge Lucas (gutar): Mtume (conga, Afrcan percusson): Davd Lebman (tflute); Mchael Henderson (Feder bass); Al Foster (drums); Pete Cosey (gutar); Domnque Gaumont (gutar): Sonny Fortune (sax, flute)}; Cedrc Lawson (pano. organ); Kha.l Balakrshna (star): Badal Roy (tabla); John Stobblefeld (sax); Bernard Purde (drums); Cornell Dupree (gutar); Wally Chambers (harmonca; and Charlos Gamett (sax). The "Honky Tonk!" personnel ncludes Mles Davs (trumpet); Keth Jarrett (keyboard); Arto Morera (percusson); Steven Grossman (soprano sax); Wllam Cobham (drums); Mchael Henderson (Fender bass); John McLaughln (gutar); and fherbe Hancock (keyboards). Get Up Wth t s dedcated to Duke, Ellngton, and the frst cut, "He Loved Hm Madly," was recorded a few days after hs death. More than 30 mnutes n length, the pece creates a tremendous funereal effect. The frst half of the pece s just organ (n chorale fason, not clustered) wth an occasonal gutar rff or drum fll. The rhythm enters about twenty mnutes nto the pece and generates a quet, but steady, moton. "Red Chna Blues" s the album's tongue-n-cheek selecton. Less than four mnutes n length, t could almost pass as a ht sngle. t's a tradtonal blues number and sounds more lke Paul Butterfeld or BB Kng than Mles. Clched horn arrangements and harmonca rffs form the foundaton of the pece, wth Mles' unorthodox wah-trumpet placed on top. t sounds comcal, but fts very well. "Rated X" s the best representaton of the current band's concert sound. The eere organ opens the pece and a heavy, drnng rhythm begns to churn. The rhythm and organ grow more and more frantc as the pece progresses and near the end an nterestng trck s employed n the studo mx. Mles' organ s recorded on one track and the rest of the band on the other. At random ntervals, the band track on the tape s erased entrely. allowng the organ to surface and submerge. rhythmcally complex pece s "Mtume," whch features drums, percusson, organ, and gutar fghtng each other. "Blly Preston" s lad-back funk, and rather borng. Mles s presentng hmself as a very black muscan. Hs album covers snce Btches Brew have looked more lke soul album covers than jazz, wth cartoon fgures of platform-clad blacks cavortng about. Hs musc n lve performance s gettng ncreasngly funker, and hs-dress fts the bll also. Wth hs brghtly colorclashng garb he makes the cast,of The Harder They Come look sedate. Mles Davs s playng the musc of the future. would not be surprsed f Pete Cosey and Mtume become the John McLaughln and Arto of the 80's. Mles lve s defntely not a show to mss. Take n a few sets the next tme he comes to Paul's Mall and keep an open mnd. A very smple pece, t has fne backup vocals and s extremely mprovsatonal n nature. t's also the closest McLaughln has come to straghtforward rock musc. n every album he's released, McLaughln always plagarzes some of hs earler works on one cut or two. On Vsons, "Lla's Dance" fts the bll. Although t begns wth a sweet pano ntroducton by Moran, one soon recognzes quotes from Between Nothngness and Eternty - whch develop nto the gutar solo from "Vson - s A Naked Sword," supermposed over the rhythm of "Dance of Maya." "Can't Stand Your Funk" s self-explanatory and remnds you of Herbe Hancock's "Chameleon" n 10/8. "Pastoral" brngs back memores from the Apocalypse album, wth weavng strng lnes formng a beautful pece of musc. On "Fath," don't thnk McLaughln s takng hmself serously. n less than two mnutes he strngs together dsjont peces consstng of progressons remnscent of "Resoluton," an electrc gutar solo, rdculously fast melody lnes, and a chuckle from Ms. Moran. t was surprsng to see McLaughln allow one of drummer Mchael Walden's compostons to appear on ths album. "Cosms Strut" sounds exactly lke the thngs Blly Cogham s.now wrtng; the rhythms and the awkward horn vocngs are all there. Needless to say, Walden's drummng s a carbon copy of Cogham's, whch gves hm an A+ n technque and a D- n orgnalty. "f Could See" and.;"earthshp" are short peces whch spotlght Gayle Moran's celestal vocalzng. McLaughln does not play gutar that extensvely untl "Be Happy" - ncluded as nothng more than an amless gutar jam. t works nonetheless. The remanng three cuts are unlke anythng McLaughln has recorded before. "Pegasus" s a strctly electronc work (wth altered strng nstruments) and brngs to mnd Lget's "Atmospheres." "Opus 1" s a brllant pece wrtten n the style of a Bartok strng quartet. Unfortunately, t s only 21 seconds n length and s lost among the longer cuts. McLaughln plays hs gutar through a frequency shfter or rng modulator devce n "On The Way Home To Earth," and t sounds more lke a Jan Hammer syntheszer solo than anythng else. Wth Vsons McLaughln has takenr, a refreshngly dfferent outlook on hs musc. Whle personally lke the musc of the orgnal Orchestra the best, ths new band has much more to offer. When they mprovse n a lve settng, they extend the capabltes of the old orchestra. Jean-Luc Ponty s a much better muscan than Jerry Goodman and the other muscans are not far behnd. What s most surprsng s the change n McLaughln's gutar style - he s not n the spotlght as much as he was n the old band, and hs playng s more melodc and emotonal than frantc and fleetng. The musc of Vsons of The Emerald Beyond lacks the mpact of some of the work of the orgnal Mahavshnu Orchestra; yet t s a welcome change of pace. The Brandenburgs are enjoyable on any level from uncrtcal background lstenng to detaled analyss, and they repay any amount of attenton and study many fold. (Lea Pocket.Scores publshes a reprnt of the classc Bach-Gesellschaft edton of the Brandenburgs n two volumes, L.P.S. No. 27 and 28, avalable at Brggs & Brggs n Harvard Square for $1.30 each-a very worthwhle nvestment.) The Brandenburg Concertos are sx concert gross assembled from amongst the several hundred that Bach composed for the use of the court ensemble whch he drected at Anhalt-Cothen. The Margrave Chrstan Lous of Brandenburg, who requested them of Bach, apparently never even had them performed at hs own court, and probably dd not recognze the ncomparable treasure that he had been sent. Rather than the exhaustve exploraton of a sngle theme or a sngle concept whch characterzes most of Bach's "sets" (for example, t.e Art of Fugue, Muscal Offerng,,and Well- Tempered Claver), the Brandenburgs contan, n Hubert Parry's words, a "feast of varety," and were assembled to demonstrate Bach's mastery of all of the aspects of the Baroque concerto style. All sx of the concertos are ntended for performance by a small group of nstrumentalsts, generally one player to a part; the Frst Brandenburg s probably an excepton, and should have the upper strng parts doubled. Evdence for the small forces can be found n the Ffth Brandenburg, where Bach would have gven up hs customary vola to play the vrtuoso harpschord part-the second voln part s absent because ts lone player --had to replace the compos'er'at the vola. Performances wth full orchestra are not uncommon, but recordngs of ths type (Munch, Klemperer, Boult, et al.) may be dsmssed out of hand as serous dstortons of scale and style. t has recently become fashonable to resurrect or reconstruct the nstruments of Bach's tme for performances and recordngs of hs musc. These nstruments have, n general, a more transparent and colorful palette of sounds than ther modern counterparts. Two recordngs of the Brandenburgs are played entrely on orgnal nstruments or reconstructons: those by the Concentus Muscus of Venna under Nkolaus Harnoncourt (Telefunken SAWT 9459/60-A) and the Collegum Aureum (RCA Vctrola VCS-6023). Anthony Newman and Frends (Columba 'M2 and M2Q 31398) use a mxture of old nstruments and modern ones. Whle the use of orgnal nstruments does not by any means guarantee a successful recordng, t s defntely an asset. Balances whch are dffcult or mpossble to acheve on modern nstruments, such as the muscally co-equal but soncally unmatched trumpet and recorder n the Second Brandenburg, work wth no trouble when the nstruments for whch these parts were ntended are used. Of these three recordngs, the Collegum Aureum's s the most successful overall. Temp are brsk, but not rushed, and the dance-lke character of the musc s conveyed admrably. The solo nstrumental playng s exemplary: Gustav Leonhardt's playng, t need hardly be sad, sets the standard for other harpschordsts; Edward Tarr's traversal of the hgh-wre clarno trumpet part (perfectly balanced wth the recorder!) s nothng short of phenomenal; and such emnent players as Erch Penzel on horn and Hans-Martn Lnde on flute and recorder keep the entre recordng on a very hgh plane. THE TECH TUESDAY MARCH 11, 1975 PAGE ~-~n~r~ : rs~ass~ ~erwr-~ ~~ ~~ ~d~eb--~ ~-~sa~-~9~ -~ ~ss~a ~ ~ser-~s~a oncer os Nl C -, l - L The Hamroncourt recordng s one of hs group's earlest, and the easy techncal mastery of the nstruments that has become the norm for the Concentus Muscus s not always n evdence. Ths s partcularly apparent, and dsturbng, n the Second Brandenburg, whose labored pace does not succeed n dsgusng the dffcult tme that Walter Holy appears to be havng wth the clarno trumpet part. On the other hand, the strng playng partcularly s qute sprted, and the all-strng concert, the Thrd and Sxth, are excellent. Georg Fscher's harpschord playng s qute good, f not qute on Leonhardt's level, and the nstrument s always clearly audble. Anthony Newman can always be reled upon for an unusual and thought-provokng experence, and hs recordng of the Brandenburgs has less of the accompanyng perversty than some of hs solo ventures. The unque Newman touch n matters of phrasng and accent s very much n evdence, as are hs characterstcally rapd temp, but the "hccups" wth whch he often dsrupts the rhythmc flow are blessedly rare. The contnuo realzaton s a bt flord for my taste much of the tme, but the solo harpschord playng n the Ffth Brandenburg cadenza has the mprovsatory qualty that Bach surely must have ntended. The "frends" nvolved n ths dsc are mostly New York free-lancers, wth some ex-new York Pro Musca players ncluded (ths s late rather than early musc for them!). Columba's recordng, n contrast to the warm concert-hall ambence of the Vctrola and Telefunken versonrs above, features extreme separaton among the nstruments, and the quadraphonc verson s the most successful "surround sound" record that 've yet encountered. The feelng of ntmate nvolvement wth the performance s aded by ths close-mked recordng approach. Among the modern-nstrument versons of the Brandenburg Concertos are several standouts. The recordng by the talan group Musc s released on French Phlps "Tresors Classques" , whch s occasonally avalable n -the mport sectons of record stores n town. Well worth seekng out and payng the premum prce whch t commands, ths verson features an all-star cast of solosts, ncludng Maurce Andre on trumpet, Erch Penzel on horn, Henz Hollger on oboe, Frans Bruggen on recorder, and Felx Ayo on voln. Andre's trumpet playng (on a valved nstrument) s partcularly notable for the restrant that he employs, especally when contrasted wth the pnched and raucous sounds of some of hs compettors. There are no clnkers here-all the players are good. they play wth a fne sense of style, and the recordng s clear. The French Erato recordng ( ssued here on RCA CRL ) wth the Jean-Francos Pallard Chamber Orchestra also has star players; n fact. Maurce Andre and Jean-Perre Rampal are featured n larger type than the composer or the ttle of the musc on the front cover of the album. Andre's playng s agan good, though not as consstently well balanced wth the rest of the ensenmble as t was on the Phlps dsc. Rampal s. as expected, very good, though usng flutes n the Second and Fourth concertos s napproprate. Another bad choce of nstruments s the replacement of the two vole da gamba wth cellos n the Sxth Brandenburg-the delcate transparency.of ths pece s upset by the thcker sonorty of the cellos. The most dstressng aspect of ths recordng, however, s the decdedly nferor harpschord playng. n the bg cadenza n the Ffth Brandenburg, the harpschordst sounds lke her fngers are stckng to the keys. Compared to the lkes of Leonhardt and Newman, ths s just not n the same league. The harpschord playng n the Yehud Menuhn/Bath Festval Orchestra recordng on Angel (S-3787) 's techncally okay but horrendously tasteless. George Malcolm, who should know better and probably does, uses some sort of crescendo-dmnuendo devce (shutters, perhaps?) to produce a dstnct feelng of seasckness n the Ffth Brandenburg cadenza. The rest of the playng s also acceptable on a techncal bass but devod of any concepton of Baroque phrasngthe notes are pcked and jabbed at. Benjamn Brtten's recordng wth the Englsh Chamber Orchestra (London CSA 2225) shows the nfluence of a strong- -mnded and creatve hand at the helm. Though t s not "authentc" n the sense of some of the other recordngs, Brtten's careful attenton to phrasng and dynamcs llumnates some aspects of the musc that otherwse tend to reman hdden. The cadenzas' and ornaments, whch Brtten has allowed hs players to mprovse (as ndeed they would have n Bach's day) come out n a polyglot of styles, however. Ths s not a good frst choce, but t may well be of nterest to those who are lookng for a dfferent vew of the musc. An excellent second recordng of ths musc s Nevlle Marrner's wth hs Academy of St. Martn-n-the-Felds (Phlps ). The musc played here s ndeed somewhat dfferent: Thurston Dart, the emnent muscologst, located the versons of these concert that Bach had wrtten for hs own use at Cothen, whch are the predecessors of those n the Brandenburg presentaton score. Changes lke the substtuton of a horn for the claruo trumpet n the Second Brandenburg (playng an octave lower than the s ratospherc trumpet part, and superbly executed by Barry Tuckwell), the change of soprano recorders nto sopranno recorders (an octave hgher) n the Fourth Brandenburg. and the substtuton of a much shorter and less flashy cadenza n the Ffth Brandenbhzrg wll be mmedately obvous to anyone who has a mnmal acquantance wth these peces n ther more common form, but ths "orgnal verson" s n no sense more authortatve or correct than the score that Bach sent to Brandenburg. t s for ths reason that would recommend ths recordng only to those who already have a recordng of the later verson. Thurston Dart, who was to play the harpschord throughout. ded n the mdst of the sessons, and hs place was taken by a dstngushed group of Brtsh harpschordsts: George Malcolm. who plays the Ffth Brandenburg, s far more tasteful n choce of nstrument and regstraton than he had been for Menuhn. Karl Rchter's Archv box wth the Munch Bach Orchestra (DG ARC ') was the frst recordng that owned of ths musc. The drven, even martal style of phrasng and accentuaton makes ths set trng to lsten to and unrepresentatve of the gracefu character otf the Brandenburgs. Perre Thbaud on trumpet s the worst offender-the strdency of hs playng s physcally panful. The temp are very fast, and though the players are good enough to get through the notes one can't help but mss the subtlety that was sacrfced to speed. Karl Rstenpart's set on Nonesuch (73006) wth the Chamber Orchestra of the Saar s well played n all departments and well recorded (wth the mnor cavl of some hgh-frequency harshness). For some hard-to-defne reason, fnd t unmemorable, though t deserves consderaton on the bass of ts budget prce. t s always dffcult to choose a sngle "best" verson of a masterpece, but would strongly recommend the Collegum Autreum's recordng on Vctrola as the best overall. Ths recommendaton s made wthout regard to prce, but the fact that ths set s the least expensve of all provdes a further ncentve. To supplement the Vctrola recordng, would pck the Marrner on Phlps, the Newman on Columba, the Musc on French Phlps, the Harnoncourt on Telefunken, and the Brtten on London, n more or less that order. 11 - -.r O-.AA. P. w^~~ 15 Gy- Gr--a.,,,- h _ By Paul. Bayer The M T men's gymnastcs team fnshed ts season last Sunday wth a ffth place fnsh at the'_ New' Enfgland Champonshps. The score of 42.S5 was one of ts best ths season and avenged an earler dual meet loss to Boston State whch fnshed behnd the Engneers n ths meet. Andy Rubel '74 captured fourth on the parallel bars as teammate, Jon Johnson '76 placed eghth n the same event. n the all-around competton, Davd Lu '77 took nnth. MT gymnasts would have earned better results-were t not for the surprse presence of Sprngfeld College, whch domnated the meet, takng frst by twenty ponts. Rubel's fourth on parallel bars was clearly the outstandng performance of the day for the Engneers. -s 8.2 score n the prelmnares placed hm ffth. n the fnals, he scored 8.45, hs hghest score of the season, and the second hghest score of any athlete n the fnals of that event. For the most part, Rubel's routne was shorter and slghtly less dffcult than hs opposton, but hs dstnctvely strong, lght style gave hm an edge over the heaver, more ploddng style of the others. Partcularly notable was hs straght body back flp dsmount wth perfect form. t should also be noted that all three people who. beat hm were from Sprngfeld. beat hm. Johnson's prelm' routne showed a few rough spots ncludng weak handstands. However, he was able to correct most of hs problems n the fnals and acheved hs best set of the season. Unfortunately, he was not able to ht hs double back -dsmount and dd. not mprove hs standng n the fnals. As a team, MT put together a score just about average for the season, n what s always the most dffcult meet n whch to perform well. Every event was wthn 0.3 of average except the parallel bar team whch ht 3.1 above. Behnd Rubel there were Curt Them '75 wth 7.35, Davd Lu wth 6.65, and Alan Razak '75 wth 6,6. The other top scorers were Lu on floor exercse and vaultng, Wes Taylor '76 on - --,_~~mj--ra ~----~--nn mnas2 cs fft 2V12 n- nrc Y-- a ~~~~~~~L pommel horse, and Scott Foster '75 on hgh bar. The ffth place fnsh was a strong showng as the MT gymnasts were only sx ponts behnd fourth place Dartmouth. However, losng fve of ths year's top seven scorers to graduaton means that next year wll once agan be a rebuldng year.,.,, ~~~ n 4low-am- Dodt let-th e a college stop 11 THETECH TUESD A Y, MARCH 11,1975 PAGE 1 Y 4-- L- = _~- C-- ~P 1 Buddy's Srlon Pt Bratte St. Harvard Sq..... By Dan Gantt Superb pe rformances by freshman Mark Smth and sophomore Arle Sterlng enabled the MT fol team to retan ts ttle at ths year's ntercollegate Fencng Assocaton Champonshps, held last Frday and Saturday here at MT. n plng up 24 wns out of a possble 33, the folers edged runner-up Columba by two bouts and placed MT sxth overall n the twelve-school feld. Columba, however, dd capture the team sabre champonshp behnd the flashy fencng of ts ndvdual champon, Tom Losonczy, but could not come close to takng the three-weapon ttle from New York Unversty, whch amassed an amazng total... 4-'~ T" ~ 5 '"~'~r~ ~ ~< ~...,ja~-.- g,.-o ~,.d',, '~~~~~~~ac.'"::-" : :::'' Hs 11-0 record n the team competton earned hm one of the sx spots n Saturday's ndvdual fnals n whch he also excelled. earnng a thrd place fnsh. Sterlng, fencng n the number two poston for MT, was certanly more than equal to the task. Performng wth great consstency throughout the tournament, Sterlng downed nne of hs eleven opponents. He also earned a spot n the fnals, defeatng Denflee of Columba, 5-3, n a fence-off. MT's top foler, Rch Remer '77, appeared to be somewhat overmatched n hs pool and never seemed to qute get untracked. He nonetheless contrbuted four decsve wns to Engneer folsman Mark Smth '78 (rght) was the surprse of the tournament, sweepng eleven bouts n the team competton and placng thrd n ndvdual fol. of 29 wns n epee whle collectng ts thrd consecutve FA champonshp. Stll, the outstandng efforts of MT's folers cannot be overlooked. After losng ther top fencer n fol, last year's FA ndvdual champon. the Engneers' chances for a repeat of ther 1974 team ttle dd not seem sold. The addton of Smth, though, fencng n' the thrd spot on the three-man squad. made the dfference. Dsplayng an amazng quckness and fne style, Smth defeated each opponent he faced wth seemngly lttle dffculty. the cause. The folers never traled n the quest for the ttle after the frst round (three bouts) of competton. Stll, they were never qute able to pull away commandngly from the feld and, headng nto the fnal round of fencng, had not clnched the champonshp. Not untl Sterlng defeated Cornell's Sanders n the next-to-last bout of the day, could the Engneers relax. n wnnng the ttle, the folers also retaned for MT the prestgous "Lttle ron Man" trophy. Best guesses are that the ~p mrtlg Ndottrel On Wednesday, March 12, n the Varsty Club Lounge, there wll be an open meetng of the MT Athletc Assocaton. Ths belef prompted MT's fencng coach, Maestro Slvo Vtale, to suggest that perhaps a permanent case should be constructed to house the "ron Man," not at all an unreasonable proposton. Although nether managed to wn the ndvdual champonshp, 'the performances of Smth and Sterlng n the fol fnale were qute admrable. Both forced the eventual wnner, Jack Tehacek of the Unversty of Pennsylvana, to the brnk, losng only 5-4. Smth, however, was partcularly strong. Although a lttle unsure of hmself at the start, losng to Sterlng and Bennett of Harvard, (the eventual runner-up), Smth came back to fence a beautful bout, downng Tretz of Navy, 5-1. Then, after barely losng out to Tehacek, he blew Maths of Rutgers off the strp, 5-2, to clnch a thrd-place fnsh. Certanly, though, the clma'x of the two days of fencng occurred n the very last bout, a fence-off for the ndvdual : champonshp n epee between : Rsto Hurme of NYU and Daryl.Taylor of Penn. Wth less than ten seconds remanng n the tenson-flled bout and Tavlor leadng, 2-1, Hurme made a beautful move to te the score and cause a sudden-death stuaton. The two then fenced wth great cauton, buldng enormous suspense for what seemed an ntermnable length of tme before Hurme caught Taylor slghtly off-balance wth a quck lunge to take the champonshp. The prevous day, MT had faled to place a fencer n the epee fnals, although Chp Farley '75 fell just short wth a 7-4 record. Farley, n fact, defeated Hurme n the team competton and could even have ousted Taylor from the fnals had he defeated hm n both fencers' fnal prelmnary bout. Jm Cook '75 and Dave )reyfuss '76 also competed for MT n epee, wnnng fve and four bouts, respectvely. n the sabre competton, MT was not qute up to par, wnnng only a thrd of ts bouts. Dong Park '75, the Engneers' top sabreman, dd wn fve, but was qute dsapponted wth hs showng. Robert Shn'77 fenced n the number two spot, and Jm Callmerten '75 fenced n the thrd pool for MT. Columba's Losonczy, though, was by far the class of the sabre competton. Defeatng the top fencer from every school n Saturday mornng's team fencng, he came back that afternoon to easly defeat each of hs fve opponents n the fnals, wn- Columba's Tom Lozonczy (left) champonshp by wnnng all 16 ndvdual crown. nng a total of 16 consecutve bouts. Losonczy's fencng was topped only by hs theatrcs, makng hs bouts doubly nterestng for the spectators. At the awards presentaton mmedately followng the completon of the fencng, numerous trophes and medals were-gven out to the top compettors. Recpents of the coveted Georges L. Conte Award, gven annually to the fencer demonstratng hgh qualtes of sportsmanstp, were named, ths year for the frst tme ncludng one fencer n each weapon. Penn's Taylor was gven the award n epee, Rch Petrett of Prnceton n fol, and Dave Uffelman also of Prnceton n sabre. All-n-all, the tournament was a resoundng success for MT, both for ts fne handlng of the affar and for ts-success n the competton. t can only be hoped that such excellent sportng competton can fnd ts way to the MT campus more often.
