Music at Immanuel Music can be accessed by all students at Immanuel from Reception to Year 12. Students have the option of absorbing musical knowledge and skills through: the Primary, Middle and Senior School Classroom/Elective Programs; individual instrumental and vocal instruction; participation in extra-curricular musical activities; Novar Music Learning Centre after hours community program. Music reaches into the lives of over 1300 students across the Immanuel Primary, Middle and Senior Schools in a program of activities incorporating many instrumental and choral ensembles including concert bands, stage bands, studio orchestra, string orchestras, concert and chamber choirs and smaller jazz and rock combos. Under the guidance of more than 40 specialist classroom and instrumental teachers, a balance of traditional approaches with the use of modern technology and academic growth with professional performance opportunities is achieved. Within the College curricular program, students experience a diverse and relevant musical education via the units composing and arranging, musicianship, music history, sound production and recording techniques and industry skills via the embedded VET Certificate II in Music. This very balanced and rigorous academic program has led consistently outstanding Music results at SACE Stage II with several A+ Merits being achieved. With an average of fifty public performances a year, the extra-curricular program extends the students experiences beyond their imaginations and has previously included activities such as: country tours to Kangaroo Island, Barossa Valley, Yorke Peninsula; interstate tours; overseas tours to Malaysia, United States, New Zealand, Singapore concerts with Anthony Callea,Tim Campbell, Don Burrows, Kevin Hunt, James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel, Ross Irwin; workshops with international musicians; hosting visiting interstate or international groups; professionally staged musicals at city theatres; music showcases at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Adelaide Festival Theatre, Adelaide Town Hall, Elder Hall, Norwood Concert Hall and Queen s Theatre; winning entries at the Eisteddfod Choral Competitions, ABODA School Bands Festival & Generations in Jazz Festival performances for community and service organisations and music festivals. Music at Immanuel is designed to facilitate individual knowledge and skill development as well as social development for our students through their primary and secondary years and beyond. 4 Why do Music at Immanuel College? Music is fundamental to creative, intellectual and emotional development and offers students an outstanding opportunity to make growth through: knowledge in a life-long skill area; involvement, sharing, discipline and commitment in a most pleasurable learning activity; acquiring informed appreciation in a rapidly growing area that is assuming increasing importance in our society; developing and refining expertise in a selected area of music; preparation for: a variety of tertiary education programmes active involvement in church, community or leisure activities professional and/or community involvement; the unique opportunity to perform either individually or as part of a group. There are many ways of making music at Immanuel and developing performance and presentation skills. It is a dynamic part of the curriculum and co-curricular programs at Immanuel and it enhances all of our events. Music Student Handbook > Page Four

Music Department Policy The following statements have been developed to inform students and parents regarding the expectations of students involved in the Immanuel College Music Programme. Students at Immanuel College may be involved in both curricular and/or extra curricular programs. Curricular The Elective Music Course provides a sound basis and background of experiences for students to take SACE Music Stages 1 and 2. All Elective Music students are required to take weekly 30 minute instrumental or vocal lessons and participate in a class instrumental ensemble, supplemented by relevant theoretical components. Year 8 students with no previous experience are required to learn a concert band instrument and may receive group instruction, free of charge, on a selected instrument until such time as individual tuition is considered advisable. Students who have already reached an acceptable standard on a stringed instrument are accepted into the String Programme. Advanced piano students who wish to major in that instrument in senior years are encouraged to gain experience on a band/string instrument in order to participate actively in ensembles where there are only limited positions available for keyboard players. Students who successfully complete Year 9 and 10 Music will satisfy the course requirements of the nationally recognised VET Certificate II in Music. This Certificate is a pathway to further studies in Music at Immanuel College and other tertiary learning institutions. The VET Certificate II in Music carries 280 nominal hours, which is the equivalent of 4 SACE credits. It is expected that students give a three year commitment to classroom and instrumental music in order to gain maximum benefit from tuition, nominal hire fees and the broad range of curriculum and performance opportunities. Extra-Curricular All students are invited to audition for the extra-curricular ensembles listed under Extra-Curricular Performance Groups. It is assumed that students accepted into these groups undertake private instrumental tuition either on or off campus unless some other arrangement is agreed to by the director of the relevant ensemble. If selected for an ensemble, students are expected to maintain a commitment to attend all rehearsals and performances until the end of Term Four. Music Student Handbook > Page Five

Instruments 1. Hire College instruments (except guitar, bass guitar, drums and keyboard) are available for hire but preference is given to Years 8 and 9 Elective Music Students. The instrument hire fee is $ per year Hire fees are charged to College accounts during Term One or when hiring commences. A hire instrument document will be distributed to parents specifying the instrument and serial number. Current instrument loan status can be viewed by accessing the Immanuel College Resource Centre homepage in immi and logging into the Oliver database. If a student discontinues lessons or changes instruments, the original instrument must be returned to the Music Office immediately, examined by a staff member and then signed back into the library by Music staff. A record of instrument return will then be ed to parents confirming the proper return of the instrument. The Music Department will not cancel or alter the hiring arrangement unless this procedure has been followed. If an instrument is returned during the academic year, a proportional hire refund will be credited to the college fee account. Instruments must be cleaned before they are returned. 2. Purchase More advanced students are encouraged to buy their own instruments in order to make the College instruments available for new students. Where the instruments are in the higher price range eg. bassoon, oboe, the College is prepared to hire these until the senior years. Should a large number of students continue hiring school instruments, the programme could be seriously restricted. Instrumental and departmental staff should be consulted regarding the purchase of a suitable instrument. 3. Maintenance Students and parents are reminded that they are responsible for the safekeeping of instruments during the hire period. If an instrument is lost or damaged in any way, please inform a member of staff promptly so that the appropriate action can be taken. Music and books should not be rolled up or jammed into instrument cases this can damage music and instruments. Music Student Handbook > Page Six

Instrumental teachers have been asked to periodically check the condition and cleanliness of instruments. Urgent repairs are done during the term, otherwise general maintenance will take place at a suitable time. Students are expected to clean instruments regularly and should seek the assistance of instrumental staff in this matter. All students must take their instruments home over the holidays and are asked to take particular care when transporting instruments. The College covers the cost of general maintenance of College instruments. However, parents will be expected to pay for excessive damage and/or neglect, or replacement if the instrument is lost. College instruments in need of repair are to be given to a member of staff. Parents and students are requested not to undertake their own repairs or make their own arrangements for the repair of instruments. 4. Storage All instruments are to be stored in the downstairs storeroom in the allocated places. Access is via the fingerprint reader at the door. Students who bring an instrument to school can have their fingerprint scanned in the Music Office. This will allow them access to the store from 7.00am pm Monday to Friday. The passageways through the room must be kept clear. Generally, instruments should not be left in the storeroom overnight. Instruments should be taken home at the end of the school day. Privately owned instruments Students who bring a privately owned instrument to school should ensure that the case is clearly labelled to distinguish it from other instruments which may appear similar. For your own benefit, it is advisable to write down the serial number and any distinguishing features of the instrument and also give this information to the music staff. If the instrument is lost at any time, this will make its recovery much easier. Families are advised to have appropriate insurance cover. 5. Reports Instrumental reports are issued with College reports at the end of Term 2 and Term Exams During the year, students may be required to undertake practical assessments within the department. Students and staff will be notified of the requirements as necessary. The department also encourages students to sit for relevant AMEB and other recognised examinations. 8 Instrumental Tuition Visiting instrumental teachers provide private tuition on campus for a wide variety of instruments. 1. Lesson Allocation Instrumental lessons usually take place during the school day on a rotating basis. Preference is given to senior students requesting lessons during lunch hour, before or after school. These preferences are exceptions only. Generally, a particular College lesson should not be missed more than twice per term so that there is no serious interruption to work. Year 8 students with no previous experience are required to learn a concert band instrument and may receive group instruction, free of charge, on a selected instrument until such time as individual tuition is considered advisable. Year 8 students who are beyond the beginner stage on their instruments will need to commence individual lessons immediately. Once individual lessons commence the standard tuition fee of $31.00 per half hour is payable. Any student who needs to hire an instrument from the College, will have the standard hire charge of $ charged to the college fees account. 2. Timetables Timetables are posted via the Instrumental and Vocal Studies page on our online learning management system IMMI. Students should check this weekly, on the day prior to their lesson and on the morning of their lesson in case any changes have been made. Instrumental timetables are available for students to access from their laptops or mobile phones. Teachers have been asked to avoid scheduling lessons during morning chapel and tutor time, unless by prior arrangement. 3. Lesson Attendance All students must present their Immanuel College diary at every instrumental lesson to enable the instrumental teacher to sign the record of student movement page with the time the lesson finished. Instrumental staff keep attendance records which are shared with Music curriculum staff. If students have a lesson during chapel/tutor group time, they must present their diary or a note signed by their instrumental teacher at the Student Services window to confirm their attendance at school. Student absence if students are unable to attend a lesson it is their responsibility to arrange a swap by mutual agreement with another student and ensure the change is indicated on the timetable OR an alternative lesson time with the teacher. Please give at least one week s notice if a student is to miss a lesson due to an excursion or other activity. Where reasons are genuine, teachers make every effort to arrange an extra lesson if it can be fitted into their timetable. However they are not obliged to do so. Please contact the instrumental teacher DIRECTLY BY PHONE as early as possible on the morning of the lesson if your son or daughter cannot attend a lesson in the case of sickness. Music Student Handbook > Page Eight

Teacher contact details are provided on the first invoice for the semester and are viewable on the online timetable. Parents/ caregivers should record the teacher s name and number on their mobile phone for handy reference during the day. If a student misses an instrumental lesson without giving the teacher prior notification, the teacher is still entitled to charge for this lesson. Money will not be deducted from accounts due to the failure of students to attend lessons without an acceptable explanation. A form will be filled out by the instrumental teacher specifying the missed lesson details and will be posted directly to the parent/caregiver s home address to promptly inform you of the absence. Teacher absence in the case of a teacher being absent, he/ she is obliged to make up the lesson or adjust the account accordingly at the end of the year. 4. Fee Schedule Tuition fees are: Individual Individual Individual Group(2 or 3) (30 minutes) $31.00 per lesson (45 minutes) * $46.50 per lesson (60 minutes) * $62.00 per lesson (30 minutes) $34.00 per lesson (divided by no. of students in the group) * Longer lessons are usually reserved for senior or advanced students and arranged in consultation with parents and staff. 5. Payment of Tuition Fees The instrumental teaching year comprises a minimum of 30 weekly lessons. This is divided into two semesters of 15 weeks each. Accounts will be sent to you by the instrumental teacher at the commencement of Term One and Term Three. Teachers and parents are free to make other arrangements for payment which are acceptable to both parties. These accounts are payable within two weeks of receipt. Payment must be made directly by you to the teacher and not to your College account. In the case of fees not being paid, lessons may be discontinued. Should there be any difficulty regarding payment, please make early contact with the teacher in the first instance, the Director of Instrumental and Vocal Studies and/or the Director of Music. The number of lessons per semester may vary due to school activities and length of terms. However, students should receive a minimum of 30 lessons per year. Teachers may arrange extra lessons in consultation with parents and students. Music Student Handbook > Page Nine

6. Termination of Lessons Students taking Music as an academic subject are required to take weekly 30 minute instrumental or vocal lessons. If lessons are to be discontinued, notice is required to the instrumental/vocal teacher from the parent or caregiver at least one full week before the end of the current term prior to ceasing tuition, or by negotiation with the instrumental teacher in conjunction with the Director of Instrumental and Vocal Studies. The termination of lessons form available from the Music Office must also be completed and signed by the parent/caregiver and returned to the Director of Instrumental and Vocal Studies. If notification is not received in due time, the full semester s fees may be payable. 7. Music Diaries All instrumental students are encouraged to take a music diary to each lesson. This enables teachers to record comments and instructions and for students to record lesson times and other information. Students should also ensure that they make a note of their teacher s telephone contact details in the diary. Music diaries can be purchased from the Music Office. 8. Practice In order to make steady progress, students should develop a regular practice routine. Efficient practice each day will yield better results than spasmodic efforts. Parental guidance and encouragement in this regard is most beneficial. 9. Accompanying Where instrumental students are required to play with an accompanist, they are asked to observe the following courtesies: supply the accompaniment well in advance of the first rehearsal book a practice room if necessary arrange rehearsal times with the accompanist be familiar with the work(s) before meeting with the accompanist inform the accompanist promptly if they are not required or if a performance or rehearsal is cancelled. Music Student Handbook > Page Ten

Extra Curricular Performance Groups In addition to year level ensembles, students may be selected to participate in at least one of the following performance groups. These groups rehearse either before school, during lunch hour or after school. Membership of most extra-curricular groups is determined by annual auditions held at the end of Term Four and beginning of Term One. A firm student commitment is required for these groups. If selected, students are expected to maintain a commitment to attend all rehearsals and performances until the end of Term Four. These performance groups may undertake concerts within South Australia or interstate: VoxPop Senior Vocal Ensemble Vocal Jazz Ensembles Immanuel Chamber Orchestra Immanuel String Orchestra Little Big Band Senior Concert Band Big Bands Rock Bands Middle School Chapel Band Senior School Chapel Band Weekly rehearsal times for these groups are listed in the Co-Curricular Handbook. Uniform Most extra-curricular performance groups are required to wear the music performance uniform for most performances. This uniform can be ordered and purchased through the Immanuel Shop. Students requiring this uniform will receive a letter explaining the ordering procedure and associated costs. Music Student Handbook > Page Eleven

Resources The Music Department has a small library of print music for a range of instruments including solo, ensemble and tutor books. Some items are available for student borrowing with the permission of staff. Photocopying Students may copy their own original work eg: arrangements etc. However, all photocopying of published music is subject to detailed conditions as specified in the College s licence with AMCOS (Australian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society). Trading Items The department has a small range of reeds, manuscript pads, valve oil and other items which are available for students to purchase. Music and other items can also be ordered for students to purchase. All purchases must be paid for in cash at the time of receipt. Student accounts cannot be used for charging purchases. Students are encouraged to keep a supply of spare reeds, strings etc. Items can be purchased from the music office only during nominated times which will be displayed in the Music Centre. Students are not to come between lessons or during instrumental lessons. Borrowing and Use of Equipment Borrowing and use of sound equipment, music stands, keyboards, amps etc. must be approved by the music staff and a booking form completed at the music office. All items must be signed out and signed back in by a staff member. Music Student Handbook > Page Twelve

Use of Music Department Facilities The Music Department, incorporating the Rock Farm and Rock Farm Studio, has modern facilities with an extensive range of equipment and resources. Students are asked to value these by observing the following points: Food and drink is not to be brought into the Music Centre by students. Practice rooms and rehearsal spaces are to be left in a tidy condition. Windows should be closed, air-conditioning and lights turned off when a student leaves the room. Rooms used for class lessons should be left in a tidy condition. The first floor music technology area and ground floor rehearsal area may only be used with staff supervision. School instruments eg. percussion and sound equipment are expensive and should be treated with respect. Equipment should not be removed from any room without the permission of staff. Instruments must be stored neatly in the designated areas of the storage room. At recess and lunchtime, students are able to use the Music facilities only with approval from a staff member. Students attending classes upstairs are to enter and leave via the southern stairs next to the Boarding House. The staff area is out of bounds unless students wish to see a member of staff. Students are requested to purchase supplies from the music office during nominated times only. Purchasing of items cannot be done during or between lessons. Music Student Handbook > Page Thirteen
