Location: FAC 229 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McIntyre Text: Music: an Appreciation Seventh Brief Edition By: Roger Kamien Phone: Office: FAC rm Course Objectives: To provide an introduction to the history and development of Western Music from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century. Grading: 5 Tests: 75% = A 2 Concert Reports 25% = B = C = D 0-59 = F Test: Tests will consist of written and listening questions. The exams are multiplechoice and will require Scan-Trons. There are NO make-ups for missed tests. The lower of the first four test grades will be dropped. The Final will not be dropped and will not be changed. The Final Exam will be on May 10 at 10:00 a.m. and will be comprehensive for the listening portion. Concert Reports: You are required to attend two live music performances*during this semester and write a typed, full page review of each. These reports must be in your own words and may not be copied from any source. Copied or incomplete reports will get a zero. All reports must be turned in before the final is given and must be presented to the instructor for this class only. Reports must be in the form of a hard copy. No discs or s will be accepted. NO LATE REPORTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON. At least one of the two reports must be classical * *See instructor if you have questions as to which type of performance is acceptable
2 Extra Credit: You may do a two-page biography on a composer of your choice or give a five minute oral presentation to the class involving a music example. Either option would raise one test one letter grade. You may only do one of each. Extra credit will not replace reports. Attendance: You may be dropped from this class if you miss more than 12.5% of class time. If you wish to drop, you must do so officially. Students who fail to drop by March 29 will get the grade their average dictates. W s will not be given as a final grade to anyone who is still enrolled after the official drop date. A grade of I is given only in extreme cases and will never be given on request. Work or travel is not an excuse for missing class or tests. Course Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): 1. Upon listening to a piece of music, be able to identify the historical period from which it comes 2. Be able to identify the sound of major instruments in the orchestra 3. Know the four instrumental groupings of instruments in the orchestra 4. Recognize the sound of the piano, organ, harpsichord and organ 5. Know the approximate dates of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20 th Century periods in music 6. Be able to identify appropriate Italian music terms General Information: Students who require reasonable accommodation for disabilities are encouraged to report to Room 106 LHSB, or call to make necessary arrangements. Faculty are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. The Fine Arts Department at Central College strongly recommends that all HCCS students carry some form of medical insurance to cover illness and injury, both on and off campus. Information regarding low-cost health insurance for students is available in the Fine Arts Office. Under Texas State statute, HCCS is immune to liability in the event of accident or injury.
3 This course meets the basic intellectual competencies for core courses including reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking and computer literacy. Academic advisement concerning specific Fine Arts courses and degree plans for Music is available to Central College students during the academic semesters. Please sign up in the Fine Arts Office, FAC 101, to speak to a full time instructor in your area of interest. It is against college policy to bring children to class. This policy is strictly enforced by the Fine Arts Department. Guests and observers tend to be a distraction to class. You must obtain permission before bringing a guest to class. Students who repeat a course for a third or more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring or other assistance prior to considering withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing grades. Houston Community College defines scholastic dishonesty as: cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion. Penalties for academic dishonesty at HCCS include, but are not limited to, 0 on the test or assignment in question, W in the course or F in the course. NO DICTIONARIES PERMITTED DURING TESTS NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN CLASS TURN OFF CELL PHONES AND PAGERS BEFORE COMING TO CLASS STUDENTS WHO HABITUALLY COME IN LATE OR COME AND GO DURING CLASS MAY BE ASKED TO LEAVE THIS CLASS (I May Drop You)
