1 Sponsored by: with WW Public Schools Music Program, MDU Resources Foundation Yancey P Winans Trust, Walla Walla Sunrise Rotary, Art Walla, Melody Muffler LLC, Hot Poop August 6 th August 10 th, 2018 and August 10 5:30 PM Concert Performance The Walla Walla Symphony and the Walla Walla Blues Society are pleased to present a free, 1-week performance camp designed to give its participants the experience of preparing and producing a Rock n Roll concert. CONCEPT: Walla Walla Rock Camp is a 1-week intensive music experience designed to provide interaction between young musicians and music enthusiasts in a real-life production setting. Some campers will work together as a band, choose a band name, select and arrange songs, write and record music, and learn how to promote their group. Other campers work together on the production side of music such as video and other multimedia, journalism and marketing, merchandise, and the design and setup of stage and sound equipment. The experience will culminate with a free live concert performance for friends, family, and the community to see what Walla Walla s future Rock n Rollers will look and sound like. CAMPERS: The camp is open to students in grades 7-12 (students entering 7th grade okay, but no 2018 high school graduates). Students participating in the music focus of the camp should want to learn more about playing an instrument and/or singing. All Instruments are welcome, no experience necessary! Repeat campers are encouraged and welcomed! CONTENT: Topics discussed during rock camp include, but are not limited to: Instrument and ensemble coaching Song selection and arranging Professionalism and stage presence Marketing and promoting a music production Music Recording and Live Sound Production DATES AND TIMES: Walla Walla Rock Camp will meet August 6 August 10 and sessions will run from 9:00am - 2:45pm every camp day except Friday, which will be 9am-12pm The final concert will be on Friday, August 10 at 5:30pm, and be held at Washington Park (700 W. Cherry at Cayuse and Cherry St.). LOCATION: Walla Walla Rock Camp will be hosted by Garrison Middle School, 906 Chase Ave, Walla Walla, WA COST AND COMMITMENT: The camp is FREE, but limited to the first 50 campers to sign up! Because each band member becomes an integral part of their band, please be certain that campers can commit to the sessions AND the final performance. Please note that Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Dept. will provide FREE lunches for campers. 2 WHERE TO REGISTER: You can mail the registration/waiver form to the Walla Walla Symphony mailing address above or drop them by in person at 13 ½ E. Main Street, Suite # 201 (above Olive Marketplace and Cafe). Paperwork can also be returned to Hot Poop (210 E Main St, Walla Walla) or Melody Muffler (429 S. 9th Ave, Walla Walla). INSTRUMENT/VOCAL INSTRUCTION LEVELS: Please indicate on the registration form which instrument you wish to receive instruction on, and at what level. Basic descriptions of the levels are provided below and instructors will vary the content according to their expertise. If you don t play an instrument but want to be a part of the experience, you can join our Journalism and Media team. Beginning Level Courses: These courses are designed for the newcomer. You will learn fundamentals for playing your instrument such as body positioning, major-scale chord progressions, basic music theory, and various exercises and techniques that will help you to build up your skills. Intermediate Level Courses: These courses will enhance and expand your knowledge of your instrument. You will advance your knowledge of music theory and the dynamics of various styles of music such as blues, jazz, folk, rock, etc. Advanced techniques and exercises will be taught to increase your proficiency. Advanced Level Courses: These types of courses are for campers who have been playing their instrument for some time (>8 years) and have had a history of professional music lessons. You will learn advanced topics of music theory such as the circle of fifths, jazz progressions, advanced scales, chord-scale relationships, arpeggios, as well as advanced techniques and exercises that will hone your skills. ROCK CAMP DAILY CLASSES: You will be assigned a schedule that reflects your main instrument and/or vocal instructional preference. In addition, there will be some elective courses available. This year s courses will be: Rock 'n Roll Journalism: Help create Rock Camps' official program - take pictures, build a page, and help assemble the program! World Drumming: Play in the drumming jam that will be a part of the Final Concert Home T-Shirt Shop: Learn to make your own Rock 'n' Roll T-shirt - you can even take it with you at the end of the week! Guitar-Tech 101: Learn to setup, tune, and care for a guitar. You will build and design a guitar in this course that will be raffled off at the concert! Recording: Learn how to record a band in studio Live Sound: Learn how to be the sound engineer for a live concert! Tabitha Claiborne: Tabitha is the lead singer for Shanks Pony. She will be teaching you how to sing and give you insight on what it is like to be the front-runner for a Rock n Roll Band! Caleb Condie: Caleb is our resident string instructor and pianist to help you learn how to rock out while playing piano, violin, viola, cello, or bass! Will Garcia: Will is here to teach you how to set up and produce a live sound concert. Phil Lynch: Local legend on the guitar, Phil, is here to help you learn and improve your shredding skills on the guitar, bass and any brass/wind instrument! Jared Pennington: Jared is a member of local Walla Walla band, Shanks Pony. He will help you learn how to play guitar and teach you how to build a guitar in Guitar-Tech 101. Joey Norby: Joey is here to teach you all about rhythm and beat as your drum set instructor, helping you be the best drummer you can be! Rodney Outlaw: Rodney is going to teach you how to properly record a band in studio and teach you how to properly use the equipment. You may even walk out with a recording of yourself!
