DAY 1: Sunday, June 10, :00-5:00 Masterclass (Monoyios General rep) 6:30-8:00 Lecture The Baroque: an introduction through art, architecture and music (Taurins - Walter Hall) The baroque style was not only an art of passions, ecstasies, and allegory, but also a political means to convey an energetic image of power and wealth, inspiring awe and respect. Painting, sculpture, and architecture were melded together into an expressive and powerful art form. Join Ivars Taurins for an exploration of baroque art and architecture and its parallels in music. DAY 2: Monday, June 11, :50-9:50 Performance Practice: The Basics #1 (Taurins) What do we as musicians do to distinguish the musical languages of Bach or Biber from those of Brahms, Bartok, Britten, or Binchois? With the aid of baroque treatises and scores, we explore the general and specific theoretical and stylistic issues the rules of thumb of 17th- and 18th-century music, providing an historically-informed basis for the interpretive decisions we make as 21st-century musicians. Nature further increases the challenge by giving us a system that precludes completely pure intonation. What does in tune mean in a baroque ensemble? He explains how continuo orchestration adds to the general musical experience, and offers a short history of orchestration in each part of Europe.
