9 INSTRUMENTAL and VOCAL TUITION PROGRAM Our School of Music arranges lessons by specialist instrumental and vocal teaching staff at our College during the school day for students wishing to undertake individual, or in some cases, shared lessons. Payment is a matter between the teacher and parents with lessons invoiced at the commencement of each term and payable prior to commencement of lessons. Priority for out of school time is given to Year 12 then 11 etc. Parents and students are reminded while these teachers are not staff members of our College they are to be treated with the same respect and consideration as all other staff. We also ask you to respect the fact these people rely on your payment of lessons for their livelihoods, and request you make sure their accounts are paid promptly. Once enrolled in this program, students are expected to continue lessons for at least one semester. To cease lessons, parents must advise our Director of Performance Music in writing of their intention four weeks prior to the end of the semester or payment in lieu. In the case of illness on the day of a lesson, please advise your music teacher prior to 8.00 a.m. (they will give you their mobile number) the student will not be at school. It is the responsibility of the student or parents to advise the teacher in advance if a student will be absent due to exams, excursions, sports days etc. In many cases an alternative time can be organized if the teacher is advised well in advance. Lessons missed without notification will be charged for. If a lesson is missed due to a teachers absence the lesson will either be made up or credited against the levy for the following term. When you enrol for lessons, your teacher allocates a weekly lesson time in their calendar during the school term. Teachers cannot find a replacement student for short periods of time if students go away on holidays during a school term therefore lesson times for holidays during school term are to be paid for. Middle and Senior School students must bring their diary to each lesson to have the time signed off and the lesson time noted for the following week by the instrumental music teacher. Lessons are offered on a weekly basis in individual 20 or 30 minute time slots. In some cases and on some instruments, shared or group tuition is available in 30 minute time slots. It is mandatory all students learning through our Tuition Program be involved in our Ensembles Program when, in the opinion of the teacher or the Director of Performance Music, a suitable standard has been achieved. Tuition is available on the following instruments to students of all ages providing they are physically capable of playing the instrument they choose. BRASS KEYBOARD PERCUSSION PIANO STRINGS VOCAL WOODWIND Guitar EXTRA Baritone, Cornet, Euphonium, French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba Can only be studied in individual 20 or 30 minute lessons Percussion students learn all percussion instruments Can only be studied in individual 20 or 30 minute lessons Cello, Double Bass, Violin, Viola Can only studied in individual 20 or 30 minute lessons for Middle and Senior School. Junior School can have individual or small group lessons if available Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Saxophone Acoustic, Electric or Bass Guitar Students have the opportunity to sit for external Australian Music Examination Board or Trinity College of London examinations. Students undertaking these exams MUST have individual 30 minute lessons. 9

10 Individual Lessons Individual lessons are the ideal most advantageous way of learning and students can enrol in private lessons on all instruments including voice at the levy set each year which is listed on the Tuition Enrolment Form. Some restrictions apply to which year levels students can learn the different instruments. Enrolments are organised through our School of Music. Lesson times are negotiated directly with the instrumental teacher. Students may study no more than two instruments at school at any one time. Individual Tuition 20 or 30 minute lessons Individual lessons 20 to 30 minutes in duration, take place during school hours and in Middle and Senior School are rotated or negotiated with the student weekly so students avoid missing the same class and assessment periods. While lesson times are negotiated, it should be remembered that teachers have limited lesson times available especially if they are only at school for a short period of time. Instrumental Shared Lessons (subject to demand and availability) Students are entitled to be enrolled in shared instrumental lessons on brass, strings, woodwind instruments, guitar and vocal lessons where there is another student on the same instrument and of an equivalent ability level. If a workable shared lesson cannot be formed, the student will be allocated a 20 minute individual lesson. Shared lessons last 30 minutes, take place during school hours and in Middle and Senior School are rotated or negotiated with the student weekly so students avoid missing the same class and assessment periods. Continued participation in lessons is subject to a student s attitude, attendance and pursuit of excellence in performance in both their lesson and ensemble. Students must bring instrument, music and other necessary equipment to all lessons and rehearsals. Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) or Trinity College of London Exams Students are encouraged to sit for external AMEB or TRINITY exams. Students wishing to undertake these examinations must have 30 minute individual lessons. Results from Grade Four and above are included on a student exit statement when leaving school. Ensembles Program Our Ensembles Program provides students of all interests and ability levels with opportunities to develop their music skills by playing and / or singing in our performance groups. Students receive acknowledgement on annual reports of their involvement in our ensembles as recognition of their commitment to the musical life of our College. Students involved in our ensembles are expected to fully commit to rehearsals and performances for the entire school year. Our School of Music is committed to providing regular rehearsals and performance opportunities for our young musicians. Extended tours and music camps are organised from time to time to enhance performance opportunities. Involvement in ensembles is a team effort. Everyone shares and benefits from the loyal and devoted commitment to this very public aspect of our Music at Calvary (MAC) program. Please direct all enquiries regarding our Performance Music Program to Barry Warden, Director of Performance Music. Phone or 10

12 Rock School Rock School is a vibrant, contemporary program of exams and qualifications for guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals, piano and keyboard. Rock school lessons are available through our Tuition Program. Based in the UK, Rockschool specialises in,music of the most popular genres. For those wishing to sit for the Rock School exams, their qualifications are globally recognised with tens of thousands of exams conducted in the UK and 35 countries around the world. Students wishing to enrol for our Rock School need to complete and return a Tuition Enrolment Form indicating what instrument and/or voice you would like to study. External examinations and awards are available through the Australian Music Examination Board or Trinity College of London. Musical Theatre We are now offering Australia s first national program for theatre study through our extensive Tuition Program. AMEB s dedicated Musical theatre syllabus is designed to support a well rounded musical theatre education with examinations from preliminary level through to a pre-professional diploma. Students wishing to take Musical Theatre lessons will need to complete and return a Tuition Enrolment Form. For students wishing to accept the challenge, external examinations, qualifications and awards are issued through the Australian Music Examinations Board. Smart Music Smart Music is award winning software used by music educators around the world to enhance student s learning. Students practice is focused because they receive immediate feedback while listening to their performance and seeing the correct and incorrect notes, rhythms and pitches on screen. Students are also able to hear their part in context with Smart Music s professional background accompaniment giving them pitch and rhythmic references when practicing at home. Even if they don t know what fingers to use to play a note, they simply click on the note and Smart Music shows them how to play it. Smart Music gives students access to the largest digital sheet music library with accompaniment in the world. Subscribers who sign up to Smart Music can also receive classes designed by their teachers and receive practice Materials tailored to their specific needs. This allows students to receive the individualized instruction necessary to improve at a faster pace. We will be trialling Smart Music with our Brass, Woodwind and Percussion students in Students and parents will be invited to a demonstration and receive information on how to subscribe early in Term 1. 12

13 YEAR 4 BAND PROGRAM As part of our College s commitment to inclusive learning, all Year 4 students will participate in our newly introduced Year 4 Band Program. The concentration and application required to learn a musical instrument has been shown to enhance a student s academic ability in a wide range of key learning areas This program does not take the place of a student s involvement in our Performance Music Program but rather seeks to introduce all students to the academic and social benefits of learning an instrument. Overview The Year 4 Band Program is an exciting and practical way of learning about music. Lessons take place during a timetabled lesson once each week. Each student will be allocated a College owned instrument for the time they are involved in the program during the year. The program is designed to provide a fun, dynamic and stimulating environment for students to learn how to play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. Our Year 4 Band Program is carefully tailored to suit the needs and learning capabilities of this particular age group. Students will be encouraged to have fun while at the same time developing a strong instrumental music foundation whatever their prior musical experiences and achievements. It is also an expectation that students consider the acquisition of instrumental skills an important part of their everyday learning obligation. Students should practice for 10 minutes a day four or five times a week. Parents are asked to support the program by providing students with encouragement, a quiet place to practice and help students establish a regular practice routine. The program culminates with a special performance for parents, other family members and interested members of our school community at the end of the semester. Band Lessons All band lessons will take place during a regular lesson time each week. This time may be divided between sectional lessons where instruments of the same family (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion) receive tuition from a specialist music tutor or students may participate in a whole band class lesson. Lessons and instruments in our Year 4 Band Program will be provided free of charge. Selection of Instruments All Year 4 students on both campuses will be involved in the program for Term 2 and they will rotate between the three sections (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion) to play the different instruments. During that time they will be assessed by our specialist instrumental teachers to see which instrument is most suited to their size, finger spread, formation of teeth and jaw which all have a bearing on what instrument a student is most suited to. Students wishing to continue for the remainder of the year will be allocated a College owned instrument and receive lessons free of charge for the remainder of the school year. Students will also be a featured band at our annual Showcase on Friday 27 October Students may not always be allocated an instrument they choose the same as when they play a sport they might not always get to play the position they like best. It s important to realize that just like a sporting team is made up of a set number of positions (sections), each music ensemble is also made up of different sections. In order to maintain an appropriate balance of colour and sound the final allocation of instruments will be made by the specialist instrumental teachers. More detailed information on this program is in the Year 4 Band Program Handbook given to all Year 4 students. 13
