COMMON ttrophies (BRONzE) Hold an eight second buzz on the mouthpiece only with cheeks in. Demonstrate how to put your instrument together correctly. RARE ttrophies (GOld) Play and steadily hold a note of your choice for 30 seconds. Play Mary Had A Little Lamb in three different keys. Identify and explain any key signature from AoA 1, Page 20. Explain what it means to play in a swing style. What changes? Name a famous brass player who plays in classical and jazz styles. 6 The Rhythm Names Challenge INSTRUCTIONS Mr Taylor will point to a selection of notes from Accent On Achievement Book 1 (anywhere up to page 15) and your job is to give the correct rhythm names. As you may know there are a couple of systems musicians use for naming notes of different lengths, so all the answers you will need are given in the table below. You can answer using whichever system (traditional or fraction names) you like, but I recommend you pick and stick with it to keep things simple. Good luck! ANSWERS NOTE OR REST LENGTH TRADITIONAL NAMES FRACTION NAMES 4 beats Semibreve Whole Note 2 beats Minim Half Note 1 beat Crotchet Quarter Note ½ beat Quaver Eighth Note I m not going to give pictures each rhythm and rest here because that would take the challenge out of The Rhythm Names Challenge. It s not meant to be that easy! EXAMPLE But because I m nice, here is an example of a song that includes most of the ones that you need to know Remember to ignore the sharp sign, slurs and other distractions.

7 The 5 Minute Trumpet Workout 1. Warm up with some gentle stair climbing Start at a nice, comfortable tempo and play the following sets of steps with a few beats of rest in between each. Each set should be played in one breath with every single note tongued (even if you know how to slur and think its more fun that way!). Focus: Steady airflow with no gaps between notes. C D C C D E D C C D E F E D C C D E F G F E D C Challenge: If you know the next few notes (A, high B and high C) you can add those on one by one for a harder workout. 2. Then do some push ups to build upper body strength. This one looks easy but requires decent lip and air control to maintain a steady and confident sound on each pitch. Knee Push Ups: Do as many of these as you can in one breath, without rushing! C E C E C E C E etc. Proper Push Ups: These should work you a little bit harder, so make sure you re keeping fast air going through the whole set and tonguing clearly. C G C G C G C G etc. Challenge: Try both sets slurred (only tongue the first note) and then combine them or speed things up. Here is what the combined version would look like: C E C G C E C G etc.
