All BRASS instruments should have a silver plated mouthpiece (no plastic mouthpieces) CLARINETS should have at least TWO #3 reeds to start the year (I recommend purchasing a whole box, which should last the whole year, no plastic reeds) SAXOPHONES should have at least TWO #2.5 reeds (I recommend purchasing a whole box, which should last the whole year, no plastic reeds) A cleaning kit (Valve Oil, Key Oil, Polishing cloths, cleaning rods or snakes, etc ) for his/her instrument Essential Elements for Beginning Band, Book 1 For PERCUSSION Students: A beginning band percussion kit that includes: A Bell kit and stand (IMPORTANT: The bell kit should be one WITHOUT notes etched on the bars!) A Practice Pad VIC FIRTH SD1 General Concert Snare Sticks STICVISD1 F1.5 Medium Yarn Fundamental Marimba Mallets w/birch Shaft
3 Essential Elements, Book 1 for Percussion For TUBA Students: If your student was selected to play Tuba, he/she needs a silver plated Tuba mouthpiece (no plastic mouthpieces) and a beginning band book: Essential Elements, Book 1. Fayette Academy will provide a tuba for your student, as these tubas tend to be prohibitively expensive. All students learning tuba will begin on what's know as a "mini-tuba," and work up to a full size tuba as they continue to pursue band in future years. School Owned Instruments: Fayette Academy Band has a limited supply of Tubas, French Horns, and Baritones. These instruments will be distributed to students on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact Mr. Hinson for additional details, or to reserve one of these instruments. Students will still be responsible for purchasing a mouthpiece, beginning band book, and paying the $100 maintenance fee, to be paid at the beginning of the school year. (Checks made payable to Fayette Academy. ) Additional information regarding instruments: While good deals can certainly be found on in the Internet, such as sites like ebay, parents should use caution, as many instruments offered are of inferior quality or need quite a bit of repair work to be made in playable condition. Please purchase/rent one of the brands listed, and do so from a reputable vendor. Many music stores that rent also have maintenance plans available, and such plans are HIGHLY recommended. Local recommended stores include (but are not necessarily limited to): AMRO (901) Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN Saint Fishys (901) N Germantown Rd, Bartlett, TN Mid-South Music (901) Highway 193, Williston, TN Please avoid purchasing instruments from "big box" retailers such as Sam's Club, Wal- Mart, or Costco, as these businesses often sell inferior brand instruments of questionable quality that are simply not durable or reliable. For those that wish to have the convenience of renting/buying an instrument on campus at Fayette Academy, I will host an "instrument drive" one Saturday shortly after school begins. I will make those specifics known at a later date. Additional info for 6 th Grade Band Parents It is important that a beginner has an instrument that functions properly to avoid frustration and discouragement when first learning how to play. The last obstacle a beginner needs is having to contend with leaky pads, dented slides, misaligned keys, sticky valves, or a whole host of other issues that would make it even more difficult, if not all-out impossible, to play the instrument. It is also important to keep in mind that at this young
4 age, the instrument needs to be robust enough to take the rigors of day-to-day 6th grade use. The brands listed above are generally well made and of good quality. Used instruments of the brands listed are fine, as long as they are in good playable condition. If you have a used instrument and are unsure as to its condition, please contact the band director to set up a time that he can examine it and make an assessment. If you have questions or concerns regarding the purchasing of an instrument or your student's instrument assignment, please do not hesitate to contact the band director via phone or . 7 TH and 8 TH Grade English (M.
