Students applying to Summer Residential Governor s Schools programs in dance, instrumental music, vocal music, theatre, or visual arts will need to meet the requirements for the current year. The requirements will be available on the Virginia Department of Education website in early October. Qualified for gifted services or eligible for identification with a visual or performing arts gifted program Interested in the summer residential program Enrolled as a tenth- or eleventh-grade student in a public or private high school in Virginia; or have parent(s) or guardian(s) residing in Virginia Recommended by visual and/or performing arts teacher or other arts professional with knowledge of the student s artistic capabilities Ranked at or above 80 th percentile on standardized tests or possess a C average for the most recent grade level completed, or have a letter of recommendation from at least one administrator who believes the student would qualify in the academic criteria except for unusual situations or conditions Participated in the adjudications or selection process held by the local school district Committed to participation at the state level adjudication process if named as a district candidate Must not be a current or former participant in any Governor s Schools Foreign Language Academy or a former participant in Summer Residential Governor s Schools programs Demonstrated behaviors of a mature, responsible student trusted to make good decisions when living away from home for an extended period of time The Contacts 1. 2 Department of Teaching and Learning Summer Residential Governor s Schools Programs District Visual & Performing Arts Audition Information The audition information below refers to auditions conducted locally by the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Auditions are open to current tenth- and eleventh-graders interested in the Summer Residential Governor s Schools arts programs wishing to be considered as a possible representative for the school district. DANCE AUDITIONS Salem High School, 1993 Sun Devil Drive, Virginia Beach Dance auditions are conducted in a large group. New material is taught in a class situation. No prepared dance routine is necessary. Practice clothes must be worn no jewelry. Basic leotards, tights and other attire for active movement are suggested. Hair should be away from the face. The purpose of this audition is to determine the applicant s current level of training, physical structure and potential for development. Applicants will be interviewed briefly. The interview and audition process typically takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes. The Summer Residential Governor s Schools Visual and Performing Arts dance program is very balanced offering both classical ballet technique and contemporary dance technique. VISUAL ARTS AUDITIONS Students prepare a portfolio for consideration, selecting 10 pieces of original artwork that exemplify their best pieces. Two-dimensional artworks (painting, printmaking, drawing, design or collage) should form the majority of the collection. Include a few three-dimensional artworks, showing work with clay, plaster, metal, wood, paper or mixed media. The well-prepared portfolio will include artworks mounted along with any completed artist statements. Sketches on loose-leaf or copy paper are not considered appropriate pieces for this portfolio. Only original artwork may be submitted. Applicants will be interviewed briefly. THEATRE AUDITIONS Applicants audition individually. Applicants should be prepared to perform one memorized monologue (a solo passage from a play) that is no more than 2 minutes in length. The selection should be performed from memory and may be either serious or humorous. Students should review the entire play from which the excerpt is taken in order to understand and interpret the selection. Improvisations will be requested and will be done in pairs or individually as assigned by the judges. Costumes, props and stage makeup are not needed; professional, yet comfortable rehearsal clothing is recommended. Applicants will be interviewed briefly.

3 The information below refers to auditions conducted locally by the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Auditions are open to current tenth- and eleventh-graders for the purpose of determining nominees prepared to represent the school district in the statewide adjudications held during January. INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL MUSIC AUDITIONS INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Auditions are conducted individually. Applicants will be interviewed briefly and then asked to present two contrasting prepared musical selections (2-3 minutes each). The prepared music should demonstrate the student s technical facility and expressive capability. Musicians will be required to perform three (3) scales selected by the judges from the twelve major and twelve minor scales (any form of minor is acceptable) for the state adjudication. Two copies of music are to be provided for the judges. [Copyright laws are to be observed.] Memorization is not required. Students must demonstrate their ability to sight read music (students will have approximately 30 seconds to read over the music before performing). VOCAL MUSIC Auditions are conducted individually. Applicants will be interviewed briefly and then asked to perform. Vocalists will present two pieces, of contrasting style, in less than three minutes. Acappella is not acceptable. Pre-recorded accompaniment is allowed only at the local level and students are responsible for bringing their own tape or CD player. Two copies of the music are to be provided for the judges. Students are required to demonstrate their ability to sight read music (students will have approximately 30 seconds to read over the music before performing). Specific adjudication information for the 2017 Summer Residential Governor s Schools Visual and Performing Arts Program will be released in early October on the website of the Virginia Department of Education.

It is very important for students to read the specific audition requirements for the state adjudications, as some requirements will be different from what was acceptable at the local auditions. Read carefully the information for the specific arts area. Students may only adjudicate in one of the five areas: dance, theatre, visual art, or music (instrumental or vocal). Instrumentalists may only adjudicate on one instrument. Students may attend the Summer Residential Governor s Schools only one time, in only one program, during their high school career.

5 Summer Residential Governor s Schools Programs Intent to Audition Agreement Form Parent or Guardian I agree to have my child evaluated in the local visual and performing arts auditions. I will notify the Office of Gifted Programs in advance if future circumstances prevent my child from participating in these auditions. If my child is selected as a nominee for the programs, I will allow him or her to participate in the statewide adjudication process to take place at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA on Saturday, January 7, I will be responsible for the transportation to both the local and state auditions.
