2 CARTAGENA The city that inspired Love in the Time of Cholera by Colombian Nobel Prize-winning author, Gabriel García Márquez. The charming city of Cartagena de Indias, located on Colombia s Caribbean coast, is a principal tourist destination in South America. Its old town, a Unesco World Heritage Site, abounds with leafy plazas, narrow cobblestoned streets and dazzling colored buildings. Likewise, the spirit that has named it the Heroic City surrounds the walls of its impressive fortress, on the outskirts of the sea; a place, overall, where the strength of history and a visible African and European heritage are keenly felt. Its beauty has been the muse of writers, poets and composers alike. It is no surprise, then, that in the midst of its modern day vibrant activity as port and commercial hub, the city has also grown as an international attraction for the arts.

3 THE FESTIVAL T hrough twelve seasons, the Cartagena International Music Festival has gained a special place in the international circuit of classical music events. Its current most distinctive characteristic is its approach to music from two different visions: one European, the other Latin American. Overall, cultured musical expressions and traditions from both world regions have a place in the Festival (for example, it may be possible to appreciate works by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, or Debussy on the one hand, while also Jerusalem, Cervantes, Villa- Lobos, Ginastera or Adolfo Mejía, on the other). Every year, the program centers on a particular theme, in an effort to understand the key breakthroughs in the history of music in current and innovative ways.

6 HISTORICAL CONTEXT F or centuries, the link between music and science has existed as an enchanting dialogue between two realms that originated separately, but periodically interact with one another. It all started in ancient Greece, where, in the early 6th century BCE, it is possible to identify beliefs that greatly influenced musical thought: music was not only strongly related to science, but was in itself, science. From that moment until the second half of the 16th century music was universally considered a manifestation of the harmony of the universe, a celestial order governed by numbers. In the 18th century, modern thought modified this relationship. Nevertheless, to this day the dialogue between both disciplines continues to be prolific, creative, and fascinating.

7 F THEME DEVELOPMENT or its 2019 season, the Festival will explore the link between music, sound, and different fields of scientific knowledge. The program will feature diverse works that were composed during different time periods and which, when carefully looked at, reveal particular numerical ratios, references to astronomical orders or scientific arguments on different subjects. A few examples of the above can be found in well-known works by Dufay, Dowland, Beethoven, Debussy, Holst, Bartók and Stravinsky. A central figure in this context is Bach, whose significant developments concerning numerical patterns and the world of sounds led to the creation of such masterpieces as The Musical Offering, Goldberg Variations, The Well-Tempered Clavier, The Art of Fugue and Triple canon for six voices. 8 F THE MUSICIANS ollowing the tradition of the Festival, the featured artists are world-renowned soloists or groups, who have stood out for their specialized or innovative interpretation of the selected repertoire. This is the case of the Philharmonia Orchestra, which is based in London and was founded in Considered one of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe, it has participated in important productions with the largest classical music record labels (Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Sony). Performing under the baton of one of its principal conductors, the group has been invited to serve as resident orchestra for the 2019 Festival, offering a total of six presentations including the inaugural and closing concerts. Likewise, its members would partake in several scientific and didactic projects. WATCH VIDEO

11 A VIRTUAL ORCHESTRA An interactive experience around the music of the Voyager Golden Record, a phonograph included in the two space probes of the Voyager space program, launched in 1977 to take sounds and images of different Earth-life forms into space. The record contains the first movement of Beethoven s Fifth Symphony, recorded by the ATTENDEES (ESTIMATED). Philharmonia Orchestra. In 2017, to mark the 40th anniversary of the launch, the group released a new video and audio recording of this great work using technologies that allow for its virtual appreciation. 12 T THE PLANETS BY HOLST SUNDAY JANUARY 13TH, 2019 he closing concert will be the result of a didactic initiative involving 16 musicians of the Philharmonia Orchestra and close to 60 young Colombian musicians. Together they will perform British composer Gustav Holst s majestic piece, The Planets.

13 E ACADEMY ducation and professional development are at the core of the Festival s social mission. Several key programs stand out: Master Classes, which provide exemplary Colombian music students and teachers the opportunity to exchange knowledge with the Festival s guest artists; a Young Talents recital, which seeks to stimulate the capacities of outstanding young interpreters; multiple lutería* workshops and exhibitions, centered on generating more consciousness around a craft that is key to music; the Cartagena Symphonic Orchestra project, directed at young musicians that reside in Cartagena; and Production Apprentices, centered on enhancing the abilities of young Colombian producers. *The craft and tradition of instrument building. 14 THE OPERA COSÌ FAN TUTTE A valuable complement to the program shall be the presentation of Mozart s opera Così fan tutte, a coproduction with the Spoleto Festival dei 2Mondi. The stage design, set, and costumes have been manufactured in Italy, under the design of talented professionals such as Maurizio Galante, and Oscar-winning Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo. The stage director is Giorgio Ferrara. The orchestra, director and singers will be specialized artists in the opera buffa and in Mozart s repertoire.
