1 MONASH UNIVERSITY EMERGING JAZZ PERFORMER PRIZE - $500 This prize is open to this who have a passion for jazz performance and are 21 years of age or under as of December 31st, To be eligible, you must not be currently enrolled in a tertiary institution. For this prize, entrants are required to a video of themselves performing a jazz standard. What are the judges looking for? Notated compositions will be judged on the following selection criteria: Knowledge of improvisation Creativity and interaction Instrumental competence The judging panel will be chaired by Rob Burke and Paul Williamson. What do I submit? Submissions must contain the following: 1. A web based link to an online video of the entrant performing one song solo (with accompaniment, but no other voices) 2. A short 50-word statement outlining the students experience and ambition within jazz improvisation The video need not be professionally produced (iphone quality is acceptable), however the sound of the voice should be easily heard above the accompaniment, and the visual presentation directed towards the camera. The file should be titled as follows: SURNAME INITIAL MUEJP Prize 2017 Eg. JONES S MUEJP Prize 2017 Submissions must be ed to: johannes.luebbers@monash.edu Submissions will not be returned. The top 3 finalists will receive some brief individual feedback. The deadline for all entries is Monday September 11th by 5pm. All finalists will be notified by Friday September 15th.

2 What are the conditions of the prize? The Monash University Emerging Jazz Performers Prize 2017 will be awarded to only one winner. One entry containing one performance per person. The judges' decisions are final in all respects. FAQs The improvised elements must be spontaneous, and not predetermined. The performance may be with a backing track or with live accompaniment. Length/duration: the performance should include at least one chorus of improvisation. We invite applicants to attend the Audition Preparation Course at Monash University Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Clayton Campus, on Saturday August 26th, 1pm-3pm. Notated compositions will be judged on the following selection criteria: Strength of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic content Creativity Notation practice and orchestration The judging panel will be chaired by Johannes Luebbers and Jordan Murray. What do I submit? Submissions must contain three items: 1. PDF of the musical score including edited parts 2. An audio file of the work in an MP3 format 3. A short 50-word statement outlining the students experience and ambition within jazz composition The audio file may either be a 'live' audio rendition or a software generated audio (Logic, Garage Band, Sibelius etc.). The audio submission must be in MP3 format. The recording quality will not be judged. An MP3 recorded on your phone is acceptable as long as all parts of the composition can be heard with clarity. The three files are to be zipped or compressed into one file and titled as follows: SURNAME INITIAL MUEJC Prize Eg. JONES S MUEJC Prize 2017 Submissions must be ed to: jordan.murray@monash.edu. Submissions will not be returned and feedback will not be provided. All copyright ownership of the compositions will remain the composers. FAQs The composition must be original, and be the unassisted conceptual work of the entrant, other than receiving general guidance or advice from a teacher or mentor. Contra facts (original melodies based on an existing chord sequence) are acceptable, however must exhibit high level of creative arrangement and harmonic invention. The composition can be written for any size ensemble. Length/duration: The composition must be designed for performances of 5-10 minutes duration, and designated 'open' sections for solos are permitted in the score. The composition can include sections for either ensemble or solo improvisation. Submissions must not be in 'lead-sheet' format and must assign individual staves to each instrument on the score. 5 MONASH UNIVERSITY EMERGING MUSIC TECHNOLOGY PRODUCER PRIZE - $500 This prize is open to this who have a passion for jazz performance and are 21 years of age or under as of December 31st, To be eligible, you must not be currently enrolled in a tertiary institution. For this prize, entrants are required to an audio recording of an original work. What are the judges looking for? The piece will be produced in the DAW software of your choice (Logic, Ableton Live, Cubase, Pro Tools, Garageband, FL Studio, for example) using various electronic music production techniques possibly including real or virtual synthesisers, audio samples, audio effects and mastering effects. There are no stylistic limitations and applicants are encouraged to show their creativity and skills in computer music production. The judging panel will be chaired by Ben Grayson and Hadyn Buxton. What do I submit? Submissions must contain: A stereo mix-down of your work in either WAV or AIFF file (16bit 44.1kHz). A screenshot of the project DAW session, arrangement and mixer, in JPEG format. Files must be clearly labeled with the applicant's name, age and school (where applicable). A short 50-word statement outlining what the entrant believes is the most important aspect of studying music technology. Submissions will be compressed (zipped) and uploaded to and a link ed to: ben.grayson@monash.edu Files will be named as follows: SURNAME INITIAL Producer Prize Eg. Performances will be judged on the following selection criteria: Technical proficiency (pitch, timing, consistency, flexibility, style) Creativity (connection to the story, originality, visual presentation) The judging panel will be chaired by Rod Davies and Gerald Marko. What do I submit? Submissions must contain two items: 3. A web based link to an online video of the entrant performing one song solo (with accompaniment, but no other voices) 4. A short 50-word statement outlining what the entrant believes is the most important aspect of studying contemporary/popular voice. The video need not be professionally produced (iphone quality is acceptable), however the sound of the voice should be easily heard above the accompaniment, and the visual presentation directed towards the camera.
